elias: president obama is expected to announce executive action today that will take action on the sale of guns in the u.s. the actions will expand background checks for many types of private sales, provide more funding for mental health treatment, and funding for "smart" gun technology. it will also encourage states to report those who should be kept from buying guns. sabrina: in the number two spot this morning... sabrina: armed protestors remain in control of a federal building in orgon... the standoff between the group calling itself "citizens for constitutional freedom" and federal authorities enters its fourth day. officials say the arson case that sparked this protest is over and it's time for the demonstrators to go home. elias: the third thing you need to know before you walk out the door... elias: the iowa secretary of state's office unveiled a new electronic voter

the online registration is aimed at getting all eligible iowans to particiapat in the electoral process. however, some groups criticize the system saying it excludes roughly 145- thousand eligible voters because they people don't have state issued identification. sabrina: number four... sabrina: speaking of voting, with just under four weeks to go until the iowa caucus, expect a lot more campaign events in the hawkeye state. in the next week alone almost all of the major republican and democratic presidential candidates will be making stops through iowa. and it doesn't stop there, the push will also be hitting the airwaves with new television ads being released from candidates. elias: and finally in the top five... elias: some good news for the iowa hawkeyes, after a record setting season desmond king will be returning for his senior season. some had speculated that the reigning thorpe award winner would head to the n-f-l. but king's mom

desmond told her, he has unfinished business and wants to finish his career with a bowl win! sabrina: some developing news in des moines, where authorities have issued a "material witness warrant" in the city's latest homicide case. sabrina: two weeks ago, there was a double shooting at brookside apartments on des moines' south side. 36 year old tacono conner, of des moines, was shot dead. 37 year old ami stolki was also shot but survived. police have now issued the "material witness warrant" for 60 year-old alf clark of des moines. police are asking for your help. if you have any information on clark's location, contact the des moines police department or crime stoppers of central iowa. sabrina: meanwhile, a suspect has been arrested in saturday's shooting at a mcdonald's near drake university. antwain montrell robinson has been arrested for carrying weapons and for a felony in

police say robinson was in a vehicle matching the description of one that lead police on a short pursuit after someone shot a man in the leg as he entered the restaurant. elias: new this morning, some new rules have been set for alcohol makers, distributors, and retailers in iowa. elias: the iowa alcoholic beverages division has put together new guidelines for those planning to offer alcohol tastings or samplings. iowa's rules governing the practice had been written more than a decade ago, and have not kept up with the times and lacked clarity. the old rules didn't specify how much alcohol was in a taste or if it was different for beer, wine or liquor. the new rules provide clear guidance, as well as outline where tastings can occur and clarifies other important practices that can be conducted in the marketplace. elias: also new this morning, nextgen climate iowa will host a discussion today about why climate change is a civil rights issue. the talk will focus on how climate change has become a human issue impacting the

boost in attendance as people get active in the new year... sabrina: but, gyms aren't the only ones helping people work on their resolutions. the local iowa animal rescue league is offering a program that lets you walk or run dogs. it's called paws on pavement. it's for any a-r-l volunteer who wants to help out animals in need while also getting their exercise. "this also gives them opportunities to meet portential adoptors outside of a kennel setting kennels are very stressful we try to make them as comfortable as possible so getting them out to meet the people in a more normal setting is great for everybody " elias: if you'd like to sign up for the a-r-l volunteer program, you need to attend a volunteer orientation. it's the second saturday and third thursday of the month. then you get a second training session to learn more about handling the dogs, and then go for your first walk or run! all: (reax)

"this is a great resource. we're stepping up to well over 93% of the eligible voters of iowa having direct access to online voter registration and updating so it's going to be a great tool. " sabrina:

hit the country...with no winner saturday, the jackpot is up to 400 million dollars. elias: that has a lot of people picking up a ticket for the next drawing wednesday, the jackpot is the largest in more than two years, and the 6th highest powerball jackpot in history. which also has a lot of people joining their office or neighborhood lottery pools to better their chances a little bit....but their are some tips to keep in mind. make sure you put them in and give each person a copy of the tickets before the drawing. sabrina: also, make sure there is a list of everyone in the pool. and if the ticket buyer plans on buying a separate one for themselves, make sure they know to keep it separate from the pool's tickets.
