10:02 pm
president announced his plans for gun control surrounded by the families and survivors impacted by every mass shooting in the u-s since columbine. the measure clarifies an existing law that requires almost anyone who sells guns for a living to register as a firearms dealer and conduct background checks on clients. the president is also proposing millions of dollars for new investments for mental health access, research into gun safety technology and additional a-t-f agents and investigators, although congress would have to approve that funding. stephanie: now, we told you about this story in our earlier newscasts today and asked you to comment. most of those comments supported the president's plan. including sharon osgard who tells us.... "in no way is obama trying to stop and change the second amendment, he's just saying buy them legally." but there was another comment tonight that really caught our attention. local 5's claire powell has more. claire: every night, after stories air- we ask you viewers to call,
10:03 pm
after president obama's executive order story ran in the 5 pm news we got a call from an indianola woman. she said she lost her son 15 years ago this feburary. she added while she commends this president for trying, it's only the start to what others will have to finish. "you dont get over things like this, it doesnt happen like that" kay folkers will never forget. "my sons murder was 15 years ago feb 26th. " that day her 40 year old son jeffrey johnson and his best friend were shot and killed by illegally armed men. "the person that murdered my son had an illegal gun. it was a sawed off shotgun. " since that day, his picture has been here. and the question repeated over in kays mind - what could've been done differently? as she watched president obama's emotional executive order - she thought. finally. "the mentally ill should not have guns, people in prison that have problems with gun before," kay says its not just mental illness or
10:04 pm
other government issues will have to change too. "they want to protect themselves, our countrys changing. its not ilke it was years ago." and kays well aware. "you yourself thought about owning a gun- "i havent, have i thought about it yes. have i done it yet no, have i looked at them, yes theyre very heavy "" she knows not everyone will be happy... just like she may never be fully happy again either... but at least, she says, the presidents trying. "hes trying you know, but there needs to be so muchmore done. its going to take a lot of time" claire: that's just one example of the many calls we've been getting on this executive order issue tonight. of course, we'd more no matter opinions are. reporting live claire powell

stephanie: we also wanted to get some perspective from where local gun owners buy their weapons. so we checked in with a store in clive, and asked: do they expect a change in business, and will they comply with the regulations if they become law? "i think its fair to say that theres not a gun owner in the united states that would like to think that a bad guy is going to get a gun in their hand i think it's fair to say we're all out to make sure that doesnt happen but we're also concerned about further erosion to our rights and our liberties we're getting more and more people that are wanting to be trained wanting to have a concealed weapons permit and coming in here and buying more rifles and hand guns " stephanie: we want to keep this conversation going. what do you think about the proposed gun law changes? (insert related tease) let us know for a chance to see your comments on-air. you can post you thoughts on twitter and facebook. or send us an email or give us a call . we'd love to hear what you think!

your screen. jack: the president's gun reform plan is getting plenty of feedback from presidential candidates. jack: democrat hillary clinton supported the president's plan, and brought it up while campaigning in western iowa today. clinton's own gun reform plan includes tighter background checks and tightening the gun show and internet sales loophole, even if congress wont. " i am very proud of president obama's announcement today to try to have some sensible gun safety measures to protect the american people. in fact i feel really good because i called for some of those measures a couple of months ago because 90 people a day die from gun violence. that's 33 thousand people a year, homicides, suicides, and terrible, avoidable accidents." jack: clinton went on to say that she believes these new gun regulations will

responsible gun owners' rights, and that the changes need to happen in order to keep guns out of the hands of felons and potential terrorists. stephanie: it wasn't just hillary clinton weighing in on the president's proposed changes to gun laws. republican presidential candidates, many campaigning here in iowa, voiced their concern over the possibility of americans' second amendment rights being affected. "rubio: i oppose gun violence and i don't think anything the president is talking about doing will prevent it. because gun violence is committed by criminals. and criminals don't care what the law is, they violate it that's why they are criminals. he is obsessed with undermining the second amendment - he's obsessed with burdening law abiding citizens who are going to follow the law no matter it is cruz: "just today, president obama came out with another set of lawless executive actions, trying to go after our second amendment of our right to keep and bear arms. the first thing i intend to do is rescind every single illegal and unconstitutional executive order taken by this president. trump: just wants to sign executive orders all the time. it's no good, it's no good, it's

around with the second amendment, ok? it's not gonna happen, so that's the way it is." stephanie: here's a look at the remaining stops on one of those candidates - ted cruz - and his six-day bus tour of iowa. he's going to smaller cities and hosting more intimate stops, like in manly, humboldt, and waverly. it's cruz's first bus tour in the state. he's said he will spend a majority of his time campaigning in iowa. cruz has seen a surge in both iowa and national polls, though he trails donald trump. jack: there are new details in a stabbing from earlier last month in the metro. jack: a young couple stabbed a man to death, but they won't face any charges. des moines police say the home invasion death is justifiable self- defense. on december 5th, a man broke into this home on east 14th street, with a gun. the two people inside, a young couple, killed him with a knife. 31 year old travis williams
