they become available. elias: another big story today...wide ranging reactions to president obama's executive actions on gun control... elias: many families impacted by some of the deadliest attacks in our country are sharing their thoughts about the president's new gun control plan. his executive orders will add hundreds of f-b-i and a-t-f agents, expand background checks and increase funding for mental health care. mary moloney has more: " --reporter pkg-as follows-- surrounded by the families and victims from mass shootings, president obama announced multiple executive actions on gun control. (president obama) every time i think about those kids it gets me mad, the tighter restrictions are welcome news for those impacted by gun violence. (sallie badger/ widow of gun shooting victim) everyone in the country needs to be aware and take some action. (sandy phillips/ mother of gun shooting victim)
11:28 am
courage to state his purposes and share tears with us and the nation was quite moving. during his speech, president obama specifically referred to two of his supporters: former congresswoman and shooting survivor gabby giffords... and her husband. (mark kelly/ husband of gabby giffords) it's really taking a good step in the right direction. the issue however remains divisive. (annette elliott/ gun show promoter) well i think the end game with a lot of democrats is to confiscate. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell questions the legality of the executive actions. (sen. mitch mcconnell/ (r) kentucky) whether the courts will allow what he's announced he's going to do. it will be interesting to see because my guess is it will be litigation. and several republican presidential candidates are calling this a massive overreach by the president. (jeb bush/ (r) presidential candidate) it's not going to solve any problems by having the so-called gun show loop hole be taken care of by executive order. (marco rubio/ (r) presidential candidate) when i'm elected president, on the first day, behind my desk, those orders are gone. mary moloney reporting. elias: here in iowa, one mother is commending the president for trying to press the executive order. kay folkers son was shot and killed with an illegal gun 15 years ago this feburary. she said the gun
11:29 am
shouldn't have been available to the criminals who did it. folkers said she's been waiting for executive action while watching the continuing nationwide violence. she believes the order will take a long time to be come a law, but commends president obama for trying. " he's trying, you know, but there needs to be so much more done. it's going to take a lot of time."" elias: kay says its not just mental illness or background checks alone that will fix this- other government issues will have to change too. elias: after a big comeback win over purdue saturday...the iowa hawkeyes took their home court last night... the team hosted nebraska, looking for a fifth straight win...which they did get. the 77 to 66 victory also moves iowa to three and oh in coference play this season. they take on michigan state tomorrow night.
11:30 am
college basketball, the iowa state cyclones will open their home conference play tonight... this will be their second big 12 matchup this season....after falling to oklahoma over the weekend. this evening they host texas tech in ames... this season the depth of the big 12 may be the best out of any conference in the country. " top to bottom it's extremely tough so you gotta battle hard every night and i feel like we did that at oklahoma. there's a couple of things you tweak here and there and maybe you come out with a win. so you can't hold your head too long. you need to get ready because tech is coming in with a great record and a pretty great team! " elias: and look for live coverage of tonight's game right here on local five. our own jordan furbee will be in ames keeping an eye on the cyclones. look for live reports on local five news at six and ten. elias: meteorologist sam schrier joins us again with a look at your forecast.
