drawing into record territory. soaking storms pounding the west coast. rain triggered mudslides and flooded highways. a rescuer using a tractor to pull people to safety and another round of rain hitting today. caught on camera, a frightening moment for firefighters surrounded by flames and smoke and then falling through a roof. a rude interruption. move over, kanye west. there's a new stage crasher, this time at last night's people's choice awards. and we do say good thursday morning, everyone. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm kayna whitworth. i'm in for reena ninan this morning. and if you were hoping you would be rich enough to quit your job, you are out of luck. unfortunately, nobody matched all of the winning powerball numbers in last night's drawing.

billion dollars. but that means saturday's jackpot will be a monster. so far estimated to be about $675 million, the largest lottery jackpot in u.s. history. you saw these scenes all throughout the last day or so, people lined up until last night's deadline. the powerball players were on fire with lottery fever, you might say. most buying multiple tickets for a shot at financncial freem, but with t the odds about 1 in 292 million, they had a better chance at becoming president of the united states. those odds, by the way, are just 1 in 10 million. for the record, last night's numbers were 2, 11, 47, 62, 63 and the powerball, 17. all right. so now moving on to a serious weather situation that's developing on the westoast. >> and there's so many different things they're dealing with, flooding, tornadoes, mudslides and swamped highways all from a series of storms clobbering the coast. el nino slapping drought parched

>> i have lived here about a yeyear, and is is about as crazy as it's gotten. >> overnight the pounding surf if san francisco causing concern in the high tide. raging waters surrounding a van north of los angeles. a man in a tractor coming to the rescue pulling two women to safety through the window. this morning in pasadena a large home on the verge of disaster. the soaked earth beneath it giving way as mud slides down the hillside. >> we already prepared everything so in case we have to leave. so far we still stay around, but it looks like we have more rain and i don't know if we'll be safe or not. >> the l.a. river normally looking like this from drought back to life and raging again. abc's matt gutman is there. >> reporter: this is the l.a. river, normally just a trickle of water in a concrete canyon but right now pushing 150 times its average amount of water. >> and near santa cruz buildings damaged from a rare tornado and off the coast of san dgo, twin waterspouts spinning over the pacific. some amazing images coming from southern california and the

that rain is not letting up yet. a wave of storms nearly the entire length of the state of california is marching relentlessly etward with the heaviest rains today in the extreme southern parts of that state. well, there are widespread doubts about north korea's claim of a hydrogen bomb test. experts think it was another type of nuclear device but still has the international community upset with north korea. even china, its closest ally. more now from abc's lana zak. >> reporter: not likely a hydrogen bom that's the latest word from the intelligence community. hiroshima or nagasaki. it has never been used in war. still, north korea was celebratory on the eve of leader kim jong-un's birthday. [ speaking a foreign language ] the international condemnation has been swift. the united nations security council holding an emergency meeting and even their closest ally, china, rebukes north korea. the u.s. immediately launched nuclear sniffer and surveillance planes to help determine what was tested and howhe u.s. should respond. >> we will continue to work, believe it or not, with the chinese and the international community to continue to make it so that it becomes a an incrcreasinglyigher price for being the one nation in the world out of the world. >> reporter: but to be clear, even if this was a lesser device, it is still believed to be the fourth time since 2006 that north korea has tested a nuclear bomb. kayna, kendis. >> all right, lana zak reporting for us from washington, d.c., thank you so much. we do have the story that's breaking overnight.

shutdown of china's main stock market this mornrning. the shanghai index was down more than 7%, not because of north korea, by the way, but because china's central bank again devalued the currency. investors see it as another sign of problems in china's economy. u.s. stocks are set to open sharply lower in just a few hours. breakin news frommupstate new york. 17 miners trapped underground in a salt mine in the town of lancing. firefighters rushing to the keen to rescue the miners stuck 900 feet down inside an elevator that malfunctioned. about 200 people work at the century old mine. 17 miners trapped overnight. arly a thousand feet underground at a salt mine in new york. more details on "gma." back-to-back earthquakes rattled oklahoma and nearby states last night. they were centered just south of the border with kansas and felt in that state, as wells texas coming 30 seconds apart. both measured 4.7 and 4.8.

delays possible in l.a. understandably understandably. phoenix, denver, minneapolis as well as new orans. now to florida. the staff of a hospital in tallahassee is under fire for tossing out a woman who desperately needed medical attention and later died. >> 57-year-old barbara dawson was begging to stay saying she couldn't breathe. but the hospital staff who had seen her many times before didn't think anything was wrong and the police officer who led her out reportedly said she was faking it as she collapsed to the ground in the parking lot. well, an autopsy found a blood clot in her lung. dawson's family is suing the hospital and the police department. repercussions in the meantime, for the texas state trooper in the middle of a controversial traffic stop. brian encinia faces perjury charges and the loss of his job. he's accused of lying about how he removed sandra bland from her car. bland was found dead three days later in her jail cell.

bland's sister said encinia's indictment is good, but not good enough. how many thieves does it take to ststeal a sa? for these smash and grabbers five is not enough caught on camera seen here backing what turned out to be a stolen white pickup truck into the store of a texaco station in dallas. once inside all they could manage was to trash the place and then they ran away empty-handed. very close call for a firefighter battling a house fire in southern maine. he was on the r ridge pol of a three-story victorian when the roofingenea him gave way nearly engulfing him. amazingly he scrambled to safety without even a scratch with a lot of help from his ewmates who guided him on to the laer and away from danger. a much different story here for this family in quebec city. a raging fire broke out on the fourth floor of their apartment building. flames were so intense and moving so fast, the dad forced to drop his 10-year-old son out the window and then he and his wife also jumped. that is so scary.

experts don't think that was really a hydrogen bomb that north korea detonated. it wasn'n't powerf enough, they say, but many other countries are angry at north korea now, even its ally, china. california facing another day of heavy rains from el nino-fueled storms. some of the heaviest rain today will be in an extreme southern part of the state around san diego, which could see another inch. and looking at today's weather everywhere else, heavy mountain snow over the rockies and a wide ban of rain across the great lakes and the midwest and down south with snow showers over the upper midwest. well, it's not rain but ice and a lot of it finally this morning as we're getting a rare view inside a frozen world that many fear won't be frozen for much longer. >> this is a mission to protect the planet against the backdrop of some of the earth's most awe-inspiring landscapes. it's amazing. abc's amy robach takes us there. >> reporter: the immense forbidding ice sheets of iceland. we're making this extreme climb with these glacier scientists.

bebearing the intense and dangerous elements meticulously studying how glaciers change over time. we are standing in the middle of the melting vatnajokull glacier and scattered all throughout this glacier are massive vertical sinkholes that are treacherous. they go hundreds, even thousands of feet into the earth where ice is melting faster and faster as water levels in the atlantic rise even more. on "gma" one of the scientists making the climb for us live. hey, guys, go for it. go ahead and start ice climbing. a firsthand look at this hidden world inside the ice. this is just remarkable. itooks like the climbers have made it. >> i'm surrounded by crystal clear black and blue ice. >> reporter:r: the lancape dadazzling, ngerous and disappearing fast. tracking the melting ice now melting at a foot a day here flowing down this path ending up in thehe sea. we're going to walk up that wall of ice. is it perfectly safe?
