the two small navy boats had been transiting from kuwait to bahrain when they drifted into iranian waters. the iranians say the navigation equipment on one of the boats failed, which resulted in what they call an intrusion but everybody is safe this morning, robin. >> martha, when people went to bed last night that was not the case. tensions were runng high. but, yet as you said it was resolved rather quickly. >> reporter: the timing may have helped in this. that nuclear deal is supupposed to go in effect within days and $100 billion of iranian assets will be unfrozen. robin. >> could have been. all right, martha, thank you very much and george is in washington, as well. george. >> that's right. we'll get to president obama's final state of the union right now. pretty punchy and passionate defending his record, optimistic overall but the president also showed a rare flash of regret and he was not shy about faking on the republicans hoping to replace him. abc's jon karl has covered the obama presidency from the start and joins us from the white house now.

george. the president said one of the few regrets is failing to overcome the bitter papartisan divide in washington but his critics are just plain wrong, america under his leadership is booming. >> anyone claiming that america's economy is in decline is peddling fiction. >> reporter: in his final state of the union address, president obama challelenged crics who say america on his watch is in decline. >> the united states of america is the most powerful nation on earth, period.
