jack: seven candidates were on the stage tonight, chris christie, donald trump, john kasich, ben carson, marco rubio, jeb bush and ted cruz. jack/2ram the elephant om the room tonight was the big fued between trump and cruz. stephanie/2ram as soon as ted cruz jumped ahead in the polls, trump started to question the texas senator's citizenship. you see, cruz was born in canada. and was a dual citizen for many years. marion county sheriff's department is the slack, but affecting the rest of the county they have well? local 5's jacob now with more in story. jacob: stephanie, since dallas and melcher merged into one town in they've always had their own police presence. four members of turned in their resignations. complete shock, but now they've got some big decisions to make. the city of melcher- hundred people. nats of car driving by on monday, four of its five police officers resigned at the city council meeting. so now, the marion county sheriff's office leaders sort through their options. jason sandholdt, marion county sheriff: "when they make those decisions, they have to amount of dollars from our city resources or are we that." monitors the area as part of their regular patrols, but now the city must decide if it wants to put a full- time or part-time staff with the county. because of an iowa law, the city must have

force. jason sandholdt, marion county sheriff: "there are still some small towns that have police departments that do a very good job, and then also you see a lot of towns that do contract with the county to do their law enforcement service." the city will meet with sheriff sandholdt to determine what options make the sense. sandholdt's recommendation... would be to contract, which would mean certified officers stationed in town and always on call, ready to handle any type of investigation. jason sandholdt, marion county sheriff: "let's say it's 40 hours a month, that deputy is there in the town at least 40 hours, but that's a bare minimum. obviously, if we contract them for law enforcement, we're there whenever they need us." jacob: city leaders have formed a task force to look at the different options for the city. they tell me they'd like to have something in place, by the time council meets again early next month. live in the studio, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa. stephanie: the mayor also told us that people in the town have already shown a willingness to help out. she says they've

from people who would like to police chief. jack: new tonight at ten, a teenager is missing and pella are asking for your help. jack: 15-year-old mallory lanser has been missing for five days the pella connections in polk, jasper, poweshiek, mahaska and marion counties. police ask that if you have any information regarding mallory please contact your local police department or pella police. stephanie: say education is a top statehouse matter this session--this week they're already working on next year's budget. stephanie: a house subcommittee looked at the senate file from last year that proposed a four percent increase for schools. an amended version passed out of committee. a republican majority on that committee changed it to a 2 percent increase. that's even less than what governor branstad has proposed. branstad 9:46 i'm recommending 2.45%, that's the same number i recommended last year. mark smith :45 we're glad the republicans are starting to move on the issue of school

to point out they are 336 days late. stephanie: democrats say republicans aren't following iowa law because education funding is supposed to be decided on two years at a time, and last year's education funding increase was only good for one year. jack: new details tonight out of the webster county courthouse. jack: county assessor jeanette thanupakorn was fired last night. this comes after she was accused of returning to her office during paid administrative leave to delete files off her computer. the iowa attorney general is now investigating. however, the dismissal is unrelated to that. county officials say thanupakorn is being dismissed because she improperly handled a state assessment. now thanupakorn is suing the county for wrongful termination. stephanie: a strange shooting wednesday morning landed a man in the hospital. the man said he got lost coming home from a friend's house and followed another car in the area. he says the driver of the

out and started shooting at him near 22nd and university. the victim stopped at a git and go gas station to change a tire -- and that's when he realized he'd been shot. des moines police are now investigating. stephanie: then...fire crews had a hard time reaching a west des moines home that was on fire today. the two story home is surrounded by a wooded area and far from a fire hydrant. the fire started on the second floor of the house. the cause is not clear yet. two people were inside at the time, but they got out before the fire took over. no injuries were reported, but the home suffered significant damage. jack: and folks in johnston watch out, there's a possible scam happening there. johnston police say that an elderly resident recieved a phone call from someone claiming to work with the iowa caucuses, the first tip off was that the caller had the wrong date for the caucus. they claim there's a lot of paperwork to fill out before you attend the caucus ... and ask for your home address to set up a meeting. johnston police say if you're contacted by someone with this story, please contact

police. stephanie: more positive news now.. every thursday in des moines... there's a place that makes three hundred-to-four hundred burritos.. and it's not a mexican resturant.. it's at capital hill lutheran church where the urban bicycle food ministry of des moines meets up.. the "burrito slingers" as their known..make the food.. and then hand- deliver them to the homeless in des moines.. u-b-f-m also gives out blankets and p-b-j sandwiches they bike during the summer..and use their vehicles in the winter.. serving..."one burrito at a time".. joe laslo,urban bicyle food ministry of des moines, "we're making an impact. we're taking a lot of goods out there to keep them warm, to keep them fed, but mainly just to build that relationship." brian struve, volunteer, "i was only homeless for a week, but when you go three days with no food, you've expeirenced it. you know what they're going through and it's a life struggle that i never want to go through again. and if i can ease their pain, that's why i'm in here doing it." stephanie: to find out more about their organization, head to our website, that's we are iowa dot
