three young children are dead, after firefighters believe a space heater ignited in the back of their home. firefighters had a hard time extinguishing the flames, and by the time they reached the family it was too late. nikki: local five's jacob peklo joins us now with more. jacob nikki, it's a tragedy in the town of boxholm. in small communities like this, it's hard to find someone who didn't know the family or at least know of the sorensons. family and friends say it'll take a while to process this.. boxholm fire chief dave huffman says he'd never seen a fire like this one. dave huffman, boxholm fire chief: "we knew it was going to be trouble from the start. the amount of fire spread we had and with the weather conditions the way they were, we knew it was going to be a problem." the swirling winds, coupled with the sub- zero temperatures meant huffman's crew wouldn't be able to handle things on their own. so, he called for backup, bringing in nine other departments. dave huffman, boxholm fire chief: "we ended up freezing three pumpers and three tankers, two of the fire hydrants and

when they searched the house initially, they weren't able to get into one room. but on the second sweep after they got more water, they found a shocking discovery. dave huffman, boxholm fire chief: "when they finally broke it down, they found out that the lady of the house had wedged a blanket or a towel under the door to keep the smoke out, which prevented us from opening the door." fire officials say it's normally a good measure, but in this case was an obstacle. bryce stevens was downtown when he first heard about the fire. bryce stevens, neighbor: "it started off as a couple of flames on the back porch and it slowly escalated as the firefighters were running out of water and their pipes froze." as he watched it, he says he was definitely worried. bryce stevens, neighbor: "we were just praying for them, and praying for her husband all of their kids and all their family members." . after the fire marshal's first tests, he determined the fire started because of a space heater igniting some other material. amber sorenson and her three children died before crews could get them out. now, huffman says everyone around town is feeling the pain.
10:04 pm
fire chief: "oh, we'll bounce back. i mean, it's a small town. everyone knows everybody up here, everybody's friends." jacob a gofundme page has been set up to help john sorenson with his medical expenses. since it started this morning, it's already brought in more than 22- thousand dollars. if you're interested in donating as well, click on the link inside this story. in the studio, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa. nikki: there was so much ice on the streets, outside of the home, that the iowa department of transportation had to bring its trucks through twice to scrape the streets clean. nikki: james ad lib about weather
