preparations of the blizzard 2016 washington, d.c., mayor, promises the city will do a better job of snow removal and keeping the roads open than they did the other night. >> they're saying this because this was the scene with only 1 1/2 inches of snow. this the suburb of d.c. there. it was a mess all around the dmv. more than a foot off snow is expected today. >> schools in washington and suburbs will be closed today. most area schools expect student to log in and keep up with nir studies. federal offices close at noon and metro system won't operate saturday and sunday. i can't remember the last time they did that. >> it's been a while. as you can see from the radar, there are some strong storms coming into the entire eastern half of the country. there are tornado watches along the gulf coast and a mix of precipitation moving north. >> we're talking tens of millions of americans keeping an eye on the weather. with more, here's abc's david curley. >> reporter: with a major storm
