not till tuesday or wednesday. rob rciano, abc news, new york. >> tuesday or wednesday seems far away. the storm buried the inlanand city of charleston west virginia, under 16 inches of snow. plows only got to therimary road. so people spent the weekend shoveling their neighbors. in the mountains, mountains of west virginia, more than twice as much,40.5 inches. at jfk airport here in new york, 30.5 inches, baltimore bwi, 29.2, newark 28.1. the national zoo in washington got 22.4 inches. >> time to go snow boarding in west virginia there. pretty cool. as for new jersey, coastal residents, it wasn't so much about the snow but about flooding. the storm brought extremely high tides and big waves, as well. stores and homes were flooded and the entire ststreets turned in waterways as you saw there with chunks of ice floating in them. most of the water has now receded. now the mud and debris lef

one shore community fared well throughout. belmar had built a huge wall of sand to keep the ocean where it belonged. >> well, our coverage continues now with abc's ray-ray mundy live outside our studidio i new york. >> ray, what's it look like right now the? >> reporter: well, kendis and reena, believe it or not, 24 hours after this storm hit us, new york being the bull 'eye, it's a nice calm on the streets of new york. but many people across the mid-atlantic are digging out of this epic blizzard of 2016. this was the second snowiest snowstorm here in new york and we were just .1 inch from breaking the all-time record right here in new york. of course, the main concern moving forward is for city officials to get the city back to normal, including makin sure all our subways are back to normal and particularly the commuter railroads in time for the mononday morning rush.

27 deaths in total as a result of all the states that were affected as a a result of the storm. five of those deaths happening right here in the new york city area and those areeing blamed on inhaling of carbon monoxide and also people shoveling snow here. we do know schools will be open here in new york city on monday. many schools across the northeast are still going to remain closed. of course, travel a really big deal, as well, reena and kendis. >> i know a friend of mine who has been on the phone with united for two hours today trying to get herself and her infant back to new york. what canning people expect at theirports today? >> reporter: that' absolutely riright. airport officials are saying that 14,000 flights were canceled as a result of this blizzard. the goal and focus now is to make sure that all airport operations across the mid-atlantic regions affected by the storm will be up and running by monday morning at the earliest. reena and kendis, back to you.

>> tuesday or wednesday seems so far away. the storm buried the inland city of charleston, w west virgia, under 16.9 inches of snow. plows only got to the primary roads. so people spent the weekend shoveling their neighbors. in the mountains, mountains of west virginia, more than twice as much, 4 40.5 inch. at jfk airport here in new york,k, 30.5 inches, baltimore bwi, 29.2, newark 28.1. don't forget the national zool in washington they got 22.4 inch. >> time to go snow boarding in west virginia there. prettyty cool. as for new jersey, coastal residents, it wasn't so much about the snow but about flooding. the storm brought extremely high tides and big waves, as well. stores and homes were flooded and the entire streets turned into waterways as you saw there with chunks of ice floating in them. most of the water has now receded. now the mud and debris left behind.

27 deaths in total as a result of all the states that were affected as a result of the storm. five of those deaths happening right here in the new york city area and those are being blamed on inhaling of carbon monoxide and also people shoveling snow here. we do know schools will be open here in new york citon monday. many schools across the northeast are still going to remain closed. of course, travel a really big deal, as well, reena and kendis. >> speaking of travel, ray, i know a friend of mine who has been o on the phone within united today for two hours trying to get herself and her infant back to new york. >> what can people expect at the airports today? >> reporter: that's absolutely right. airport officials are saying that 14,000 flights were canceled as a result of this blizzard. the goal and focus now is to make sure that all airport operations across the mid-atlantic regions affected by the storm will be up and running by monday morning at the earliest. reena and kendis, back to you. >> quite a big effort for the airlines. and ray, i guess you were
