"local 5 news midday in hd starts now. we are iowa" elias good morning and thanks for joining us for local 5 news midday...i'm elias johnson. elias: our top story this morning...des moines begins its first homicide investigation of 20-16 elias: early sunday morning police found the body of a 71-year-old woman during a welfare check of a 71-year-old woman during a welfare check authorities say the death was not normal, but had been very violent. at this time, they don't have any suspects, but have developed some solid leads about the death. police say there's a lot of work to be done. sgt. paul parizek, des moines police department: "it's a large crime scene. evidence that we first saw at the home, we were able to follow quite a distance from the home. so, as they processed the scene, it took them to an area across the street."

medical examiner is also assisting with the death investigation. forensice evidence is being processed. more details are expected from investigators tomorrow. elias: new this morning...moral mondays iowa returns to the state capitol today...with a focus on school funding. elias: the collaborative highlights issues being undertaken in the iowa legislature during each session. during today's call for action, they will discuss funding iowa's schools at noon... education spending has priority for following a lengthy battle the next topic for moral will be water quality, set for discussion on february 8th. elias: accusations of assaulting a special needs child resulted in a bus driver and an assistant november... now, an unemployment insurance appeals decision has made video of the incident available. davidson has a look at the

(you are too big for all that) and threatned to have him kicked off the bus (get off my bus) once the student was seated it was taylors job to secure him in a wrap around seltbelt... the video shows taylor attempting to do that... but the student was able to get out of the restraint... accurate forecast. this is local 5 midday. we are iowa" elias: you've no doubt heard of the underground railroad that would bring slaves from the south to freedom in the northern territories. but did you know the first underground railroad actually went south to a section of florida that offered freedom. it's part of america's untold journey as we celebrate black history month here on local five. "we will have that additional knowledge base to pull from especially in this lean year" they're hoping 2016 is their year. aiming to expand the newborn farm into something sustainable. in your sports news now-- it will be a big night in ames...as cyclones fans look for their team to get its fourth win in a row. iowa state coming off a road win over t-c-u, now faces kansas at hilton later today. anticipation for the game has been building.... elias: i-s-u students even began camping outside hilton after last monday's win over oklahoma... but the fans trouble fire officials say in one of the fire. folks just need to be a little more cautious. paul sandoval, ames deputy fire chief: "in order to prevent it, whenever they're there. it's a good idea extinguisher there and to have somebody be alert and watch for the heating unit itself." elias: school officials say they will discuss the incident and how

active in the future. elias: the hawkeyes got some big news for their football program....pella quarterback noah clayberg has committed to donning the black and gold. clayberg accepted a grayshirt offer, meaning he won't be part of the team until january of 20-17. during the past two seasons, he led pella to a 28 and oh record, two state titles, and named the gatorade player of the year in iowa. elias: this year's ragbrai route proved to be a hit with central and southern iowans... the nearly 420 mile trip starts in glenwood and ends in muscatine....inclu ding central iowa stops...shenando ah, creston, and ottumwa. this year, the committee is celebrating a number of relative new faces to the ride. organizers say it will be the third 15th easiest route in its history. they believe it's another great mix of places to visit.

about the arl - about arl the animal rescue league of iowa (arl) is iowa's largest

many thousands of pets each year. the arl serves people and pets from across the state of iowa through its programs, which include pet adoption, humane education, pet behavior training, spay/neuter, animal cruelty intervention and much more. history the arl has grown dramatically since its founding in 1926 - expanding its programs that serve both people and homeless animals across iowa. the most obvious growth is the number of animals the arl provides shelter and care for each year. intakes have increased from a few thousand animals a decade ago to more than 15,000 animals in 2013. through our proactive community outreach and spay/neuter programs, in the past few years we have begun to see a decrease in the number of animals we care for, but our work is far from over. other areas of growth include the arl's programs designed specifically to address the

including spay/neuter, behavior training, and humane education programs. the arl's positive reinforcement training program has expanded to offer year-round classes, as well as free behavior advice for dogs, cats, rabbits and other pets. the shelter continues to spay and neuter all dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets and pigs that are adopted from our shelter. in addition to the animals that come through the arl's doors, the arl also serves the people of iowa through its many services. mission to promote animal welfare, strengthen the human-animal bond, and prevent the overpopulation of pets.
