"donald trump is a disrupter. disrupts everything " stephanie: this week, iowa is the center of the political universe, but that universe is starting to change. stephanie/2shot good evening. i'm stephanie angleson. jack/2shot and i'm jack miller. by dropping out of the final debate before the iowa caucuses, donald trump has disrupted politics as we know it. but will this move benefit him, or will it end up actually helping the candidates who did show up to debate? jack: in your local election headquarters, local 5 political analyst dr. steffen schmidt says right now it's a tossup. "on trump right? " jack: so tonight it was seven candidates up on
10:03 pm
was seven candidates up on the debate stage. the "big elephant not in the room," as senator ted cruz called it tonight, was donald trump. stephanie: the tone of the debate was a little less combative than some of the debates trump was involved in. but there was still plenty of passion, including dr. ben carson saying america needs to get serious about keeping isis operatives out of our borders. "because there are many people out there that want to destroy us. now i recognize that the vast majority of people coming in here are not those kinds of people. but that's not good enough, if you've got 10 people coming to your house and you know one of them is a terrorist, you probably gonna keep them all out. you know figure out a way to make sure we keep america safe. " even with trump gone tonight,
10:04 pm
a hot issue that caused a lot of disagreement between the candidates. one thing they did agree on was their feeling that another democrat in the white house is not what the u-s needs right now. "and let me tell you what the answer better not be, it better not be bernie sanders. bernie sanders is a socialist. i think bernie sanders is a good candidate for president of sweden. we don't want to be sweden. we want to be the united states of america. and hillary clinton, hillary clinton is disqualified from being the commander in chief of the united states. in fact one of her first acts of president might very well be to pardon herself. clinton stored classified information on her private server and hillary clinton lied to those families americans who lost their lives in benghazi. " stephanie: now. even though he was not on the debate stage... he wasn't without an audience. sheslow drake university, jack: you had to get a tonight.

lot of people who wanted to get in couldn't. our political analyst steffen schmidt says that was not an accident... but rather a pretty savvy campaign strategy. and donald trump seemed pretty confident in his decision. we thought we'd let them start, and we wanted to be about 15 minutes into that hour so that by now they're all tuned -- and look at all the cameras. this is like the academy awards. we're actually told we have more cameras than they do by quite a bit. so that's interesting. jack: trump didn't need to be at the debate tonight for the feud between him and ted cruz to continue to boil. stephanie: cruz is challening the a head-to-head showdown. and he says he venue booked... western iowa but as bria bell news to the school. "when they originally booked the room, it was simply for him to have a forum here for individuals to come here and hear him talk. and i uh heard about it last night after receiving a text from a fellow employee saying they heard on fox news about the challege." the college is not opposed to the dual, but would need to make appropriate accomadations for the expected large crowds, considering both candidates are leading in polls. "we would need to make sure that our security department was informed as to what was going on...it would be very unique

have that happen here, it would be very unique for sioux city as well, it's just that we are limited in our space here. i would think they would have an overwhelming response of people that would want to be here." donald trump has declined cruz's proposal, stating he has an event already planned to raise money for veterans. cruz supporters then offered to donate 1.5 million dollars for those who have served to get trump to agree to the one-on-one debate. western iowa tech is awaiting to hear from both candidates in regards to what will really go down this weekend. stephanie: fellow candidate, carly fiorina, even chimed in, upping the ante to 2 million dollars if she is allowed to join the debate in sioux city. jack meanwhile, an event in the background of the debate is trying to work its way into the forefront. that's the "fight for fifteen" -- as in a 15 dollar an hour minimum wage. stephanie

jon: 2015 was a year of ups and downs for iowa state athletics. today i had the chance to sit down with a-d jamie pollard. we talked about everything that happened and everything to look forward too. and it starts wednesday with matt campbell's first iowa state signing day. " signing day is next wednesday. what do you expect out of this first signing class for him? i think there will be a lot of excitement. i think it's clear that he's been able to get in on and get early commits. and hopefully all of those commits end up signing the dotted line come next week he's clearly elevating us he's sending a message about what's important you know you can see they're recruiting a lot of o-linemen and d-linemen. that's his background that's what he played. he's sending a message about recruiting in the midwest so i think that will resignate with our fan base i think you'll see a lot of iowa connections." jon: we'll go more in depth with pollard in february.

in to local 5 for the story. the iowa wild continue to show they can compete in the month of january. part of that has been credited to a defenseman who has seen an uptick in ice time. while he may not be putting many pucks in the back of the net-- joe finley is doing all he can to keep other teams off the scoreboard. when you scan the ice during warm ups for the iowa wild-- there's one player who stands above the rest-- joe finley. " he's a big long guy that plays against team's better lines he shuts them down he plays safe he's a physical presence for us all over the ice. he's chipped in he's had a couple of goals for us has a great shot. the last couple of weeks here he's been really hot. being good on penalty kill and stepping up physically doing some of those things. it's nice when you can add in offensively i mean i think it's par for the course as far as my game is concerned." but earlier in the season the 6 foot 8 blue liner wasn't seeing much ice time-- mostly because the defensive core was filled to the brim. it can be a frustrating situation for a seasoned player like finley. as things have thinned out a little bit though he has thfound his niche with this iowa squad. the ice and off the ice with david cundiff our assistant coach. cundy has been working with him on his footwork moving the puck quicker just keeping it simple." "over the years some of my best games come when i'm doing the simple things moving the pucks up to forwards not over complicating it. getting the pucks to the net making sure we're being physical boxing out in front of the net those things. you know and when you can put those key components together you're going to have a good game." while finley admittedly won't lead the team in goals-- he does lead the iowa wild in something very important to defensemen-- plus- minus.. finley sits with a team high plus 3 and the only player on the active roster with a plus rating. and more importantly he may lead the team in a category that isn't kept statistically-- blocked shots. "one of the biggest things about him is he's fearless. he'll block your shot. he's walking around with bumps and bruises on his body because he's willing to do that for his team." a team that's practically in the backyard to his home
