10:00 pm
much decided, 92 percent of the precincts reporting have a projected winner as ted cruz 28 percent, and then you have donald trump at 24 percent and marco rubio at 23 percent but not a lot of votes that separate the two of them. marco rubio could wind up in second place before all is said and done. second board, ben cancer 9 percent, rand paul 4 percent, jeb bush 3 percent, we're not really going any further than that because there are a lot of folks that are just not in the race anymore and we might have mike huckabee on the republican side who's suspended his campaign. >> let's take a look at the democratic side, 91 percent of precincts reporting, hillary clinton and bernie sanders are in a tie percentage-wise at 50 percent. the bottom number there represents delegates. four delegates are separating
10:01 pm
plart n o'malley had not a great showing tonight, 1 percent, he of course dropped out of the campaign too earlier tonight. >> and there he is speaking live still to his supporters, let's listen in. >> without any anger, without any fear, call out the racist and fascist rhetoric of donald trump and say very firmly that he's looking forward to the fall because his father's going to hit donald trump like a freight train. i just might. in conclusion, there is no conclusion. this fight continues. but look, we fought very, very hard in order to give the people a choice. and the people have made their choice tonight and it's hard to
10:02 pm
and, uh, i know that those numbers don't reflect all of the hard work that you did. but, uh, we have driven this debate and, uh, and so tonight i have to tell you that i am suspending this presidential bid. but i am not - ... >> we just heard martin o'malley say the words suspending his presidential bid. let's check in with lucas casey in our instant results center. he has more on the numbers shaping up all night. >> we're still waiting on some very precious delegates to come in and it's going to decide the race for either clinton or sanders. look at the map, this red color counties are the counties hillary clinton is winning in.
10:03 pm
some of these counties might be very close but what this shows you, we just got little bit of an update, still 4/10 separating them. what this map shows you is that in 61 at last count 61 counties hillary clinton is leaning to sanders. thirty-eight out of the 99. i think what this shows is that even though sanders did more events, made more visits, um, clinton is penetrating outside of the metro areas and she's winning in some of these counties that are outside of des moines, outside of sioux city and the metropolitan areas she's visited so much. we'll continue to see how these final precincts come in, but it's going to be an exciting race to the finish, jack and stephanie. >> lucas, thank you so much. we're going to check in with hillary clinton's campaign. right now our number say she and bernie sanders are tied. paul is at drake university at hillary's headquarters. paul.
10:04 pm
you take a look behind me. hundred of people filed in here, we actually saw the fire martial walk in here. during the speeches that rubio trump gave, lots of loud booing from the hillary clinton supporters as well as some chanting, i'm with her. the crowd here is very enthusiastic, they know how close this race is, but they're excited, they're continuing to support their candidate and of course we're waiting to hear from hillary clinton. for now we are live from the campus [inaudible] >> paul, thanks a lot and imagine a lot of tension over there at hillary headquarters because she is in a very tight race with bernie sanders. we're going to keep on hitting the numbers because every one more percent of precincts coming in gives us an insight as to how many delegates apart they rvment rn 50 percent of the percentage,
10:05 pm
reporting. look that stephanie, just 4 delegates apart. >> jack, it's incredible. as lucas casey just told us, there are several precincts that are not reporting yet. we are only at 91 reporting. this race could change. we're not ready to say anything about who's going to win this one. it is too close to call, very close at this point. let's head back down, though, to capitol square to get a little bit more of an update on our numbers. >> pat and craig down here and stefan on this end talk to pat first of all, lots of good analysis happening this evening about the demographics of the voters who participated tonight in the democratic caucuses because maybe they weren't exactly what people were expecting. >> to look at the precinct by precinct break down in several key counties throughout the state is a complete flip from what it was in 2008 when barack
10:06 pm
lot of the upper income or upper middle class or highly educated suburban precincts whereas hillary clinton did well in the working class white precinct, that's complete different this time. you look at polk county, hillary clinton's doing especially well in urbandale whereas bernie sanders is winning, uh, areas near downtown out where i organized in council bluffs, um, hillary clinton won the whole west side which was all the working class area town, whereas obama did well in the hills which was the more upper income and it's a complete difference now. you know, you could kind of see that ahead of time in that if it's so based on, uh, age, more so the factor this time, some of those working class areas there's more younger workers. it's just shocking to see so much in person where it's just literally a complete flip of which precincts are going for which candidate. >> so we are going to take a
10:07 pm
campaign stop right now. this is, um, where obviously there's a lot of excitement, ted cruz is the projected winner by your local election headquarters and it appears as though he should be coming up any moment. just a lot of energy, i think, claire powell is there, she says you could feel how excited everyone is. of course they put a lot of effort the into this. it's not just ted cruz who should be excited tonight, marco rubio had an incredibling. >> yeah, i think show too. donald trump did not want to lose iowa because one of his rallies and he was saying referring to pundits that the pundits are saying that i just need to do well here. he was like, you know, i want to win iowa. i kind of felt that tonight in his speech. he seemed gracious and happy, but slightly defeated, i think. what do you think, chris? >> you know, where he really fell short is he didn't really have a county that gave him a huge margin.
10:08 pm
board, and where cruz was able to run up the score in certain counties, you know, story counties, some other places where he really was able to put some distance. other wise it's a pretty even race. the map's pretty colorful on the republican side. it's not - - in the past with santorum and huckabee we saw the map really all one color. rule was one way on the coast was different. much different-looking map tonight. >> you said gracious y feel like that's the perfect word to describe donald trump's speech. you expectd some colorful language coming from him. he said i love iowa, i might get a farm here. >> he might be a little more provocative. i mean, who knows. when it all sets in, i'm interested to see how he is when he starts campaigning in new hampshire. >> yeah. >> the race changes, the type of campaigning you do changes now.
10:09 pm
and is he built for that. >> the conversation for the rest of the night is who will we the democrats? 49.5 percent hillary. this is insane. >> you said maybe some fears about how close it is at this point in the night? >> well, yeah, back in 2012 we had all the con controversy with the republican party when it was so close, and they couldn't call it, they called it for romney then switched two weeks later for santorum. i hope this doesn't become the case for tonight especially with all the new registrations, these new people coming out all across the state. there's going to be, you know, understandable discrepancies in a few areas. >> how did the recount work on the democrat side? on on the republican side you count the number of votes, and rick santorum lost by 34 votes to romney which was later decided but there's no way to do that on the democrat side.
10:10 pm
about delegate totals which all get done in the individual precinct and then you're done in the night. >> they do a math check? >> there could be a math check. there's certainly especially if you're that close you want to go back and make sure all the correct numbers got reported. >> it's just really fascinating to see exactly what could transpire and exactly how close it could be. remember, we're still taking a live look at ted cruz's campaign site right now. we are hearing that he should be coming up to speak to the crowd in just a few minute. >> in the mean time let's talk to dr. stefan schmidt about this. what do you think of the ... i keep on refreshing the page here. >> three/10 of a point, 4/10 of a point between clinton and sanders. sanders can call this a quote unquote victory. >> i think the conclusion is that hillary clinton really kind
10:11 pm
she should never have come in this tight, even if she comes in the end if she wins this, it should not have been this close. she was the favorite, had money, organized, had the establishment behind her, some say she had the iowa democratic party behind her. who am i to say? >> i don't think many people were saying that at all. >> i've heard a lot of people say that, but the point is that she has a lot of good will and had 70 percent at the beginning, you know, she came in and bernie sanders was seen just as kind of an annoyance. so, uh, i think she's going to have to really explain it and, um, she's not going to do very well in new hampshire because bernie sanders that's his back yard. >> she's going to have to go longer than that and do really well in south carolina and then go on and win other states and say see, i'm a national candidate. in iowa i did okay, new hampshire, that's bernie's back yard, he's the favorite son. so it's not over yet. >> put that kit on the nomination.
10:12 pm
respond because i saw you kind of with the urge to talk there. >> no, uh, i mean, clinton had a lot of great support from a lot of the typical, uh, faith of the especially with unions coming in strong for her. i think one of the interesting things to look at especially with sanders doing so well in working class precincts is did those union workers actually go endorsement. on the state party they played it very fairly throughout between the two candidates. i think you can make a case with the dnc, the state democratic party has been pretty good. um, right now i would say if i was clinton's campaign, i would be well, she's moved up a little bit there. you know, the precincts that might be still outstanding are had ones that have such a huge surge in new voters so to work
10:13 pm
and have so many people that would be my concern that - - . >> let's move back to local 5's, uh, studio to get a check of the numbers with the anchors. >> sounds good. sabrina. let's refresh those numbers. let's start on the republican side where your local election headquarters has projected ted cruz as the winner of the 2016 iowa caucuses. 92 percent of the precincts reporting, 28 percent for ted cruz, followed by donald trump at 24 percent, and marco rubio at 23 percent about 1,200 votes separating those two candidates. and ben carson at 9 percent, rand paul 4 percent, jeb bush at 3% and we'll just let the rest f the field go after that. they're all lower than 3 percent. >> on the democratic side, see smg movement again here, as you might remember just before hillary clinton and bernie sanders were tied at 50 percent, only four delegates separated them at that point, now with
10:14 pm
holding on to her lead at 50 percent. bernie sanders at 49 percent, 11 delegates separating them at this point. of course martin o'malley dropped out of the race at 1 percent. with those number, though, we're really curious about that democratic race still because it is quite close. let's check in with lucas casey and our instant results center to see what else you can tell us about those right now, lucas. >> yes, stephanie, i think the story right now is what precincts are still out there that we need to hear reports from. let's take a look at the most populated county here in central iowa. 221 delegates up for grabs in polk county. we can zoom in and you can see if your neighborhood has reported yet. we should be able to there. you see still some white left on that map. those are the precincts that are still outstanding. when you see that clinton is leading by almost eight full points in polk county you gotta wonder if it's going to trend that way. there's a lot of delegates up
10:15 pm
we can go back and we still know there's 9% out, but when there's that much sitting in central iowa in polk county, you have to think if that's going to trend clinton or sanders at this point. we looked, um, also closely we can take a little deeper dive, you know, there was such speculations could bernie sanders get the college vote out? let's look over here at johnson county of course iowa city, university of iowa, sanders with a huge lead. 100 percent of the vote in almost 60 to 40 in johnson county. we can dip back over to story county, the home of iowa state university and ames, sanders up a strong 16 points in that college town as well. at this point i think it's really going to come down to those precincts that are yet to report in especially the populated areas where there are more delegates up for grabs. jack and stephanie. >> thank you, very interesting story there on the democrats i
10:16 pm
with those key delegates not rorlting there's still a story to be told there. >> we'll be telling that story over the next who knows how long. uh, let's get an idea of how the weather's going to impact a lot of folks on their way home tonight, are they going to get home before we start to get into this weather that's going to hit us rs brad? >> i think they will, jack. i tell you what you want to get home as soon as you can because there's thr is going to be some snow developing later tonight. tomorrow, the north western state back into nebraska is going to get hit the hardest. hivey snow, high winds, we are in the winter storm warning. it tapers off to tranquil weather, non-severe weather in south eastern iowa. the temperatures are close to freezing right now. we've got precipitation developing out there. the winds are not a problem now watch what happens tomorrow as the winds increase here up to around 30-miles per hour, maybe gusting over 40 in western iowa. then they let up in the afternoon and they pick up again tomorrow evening.
10:17 pm
blowing snow especially in that blizzard blowing area in north western iowa. here's the future tracker showing that precipitation. starting to develop tonight, we'll have a few snow shower ear here over the next four hours or so, mainly after 11:00 p.m., and then we get a break here. the heavy stuff comes in after 3:00 a.m. heavy snow developing here by 5:00 a.m. and that is about the time commuters hitd the road. tough-going until at least 10 or 11:00 a.m. when that heavy snow band moves north of town. we are going to see a little boift a break there and it will get better in the afternoon. if you can hold off on your traveling until the afternoon it will be better. >> we want to go ahead out to the state fair grounds because projected republican winner ted cruz, it looks like he's about to speak. he's coming up to the stage, we can hear the musemusic.
10:18 pm
cruz the winner on the republican side so far with 92 percent of precincts the votes. he comes with his family, a happy room there with him being projected the winner, the voters turn out tonight. >> one thing to poll at the top of the field, it's another thing to pull through and make it happen on caucus night in iowa variables. but you had the feeling with the combination of the polling and what was said to be a very good, very aggressive ground game that he ran in bringing a lot of people in from his home state of texas to help out. there he's shaking the hand of bob vander plaats. you had to believe he had all the pieces in place that he was going to need and in the last several polls that we saw he kind of maintained that same
10:19 pm
but a lead over donald trump and that and the ground game has kind of turned into a projected victory for him here tonight as he's kind of reveling in it. and going all the way around and hitting all the hands and, uh, i'm sure he's going to have a lot to say when he finally gets up to that microphone. >> you mentioned that ground game and even this morning people he was campaigning against were complimenting his campaign on the ground game they ran, almost in awe of what they were able to accomplish. he made so many stops across iowa, met so many iowans and we know that make as difference and we're seeing today that the top three are pretty close, all percentage points in the 20s. he was able to pull ahead there and become the projected winner of the iowa caucuses here. >> one little hiccup with that mailer that was criticized, a lot f people thought it was aggressive, misleading, some people who received the mailer. he ran a very aggressive
10:20 pm
about to hear from him. >> god bless the great state of iowa. [cheers and applause] >> let me first of all say to god be the glory. tonight is a victory for the grass roots. tonight is a victory for courageous conservatives across

conversations that the democratic party could have. and i am thrilled at all of the people who are playing a part in that. i know that we may have differences of opinions about how best to achieve our goals. but i believe we have a very clear idea that the democratic party and this campaign. stands for what is best in america and we have to be united when it is all said and done we have to be united against a republican vision and candidates who would drive us apart and divide us. that is not who we are, my friends. i followed their campaign very closely. i understand what they're appealing to, and i intend to
