10:35 pm
you. >> precincts reporting, hillary clinton is in a slight lead at 50 percent to bernie sanders 49 but only 10 delegates. >> this one is probably going to go late into the evening. >> we want to check into bernie sanders headquarters alt the holiday airport in des moines, hoy's the mood there, exb brittany? sun - - . >> hey, guys, it is quite the look. at last count there were well over 300 people here in the room and right now you can see they are taking a look here watching hillary clinton speak and every now and then you hear a lot of boos break out over the crowd
10:36 pm
back to the room here. and then some more music, maybe bernie is going to come out. just a lot of excitement obviously the race too close to call. so that's why these people are so very hopeful. they're waiting for senator sanders to come out, hear what he has to say and then as you can imagine use that momentum to move forward in new hampshire. i'm going to be on the flight with him headed back to new hampshire i'm told it's now delayed. he hasn't come out here to speak yet. quite a crazy night for a lot of people u no. the race is too close to call. a very exciting time and you can see by this room these people are also excited. >> brittany having fun at the bernie sanders quarterbacking headquarters, great music going there they are pumped up it's a long, drainy night, particularly for the clinton and sanders campaign.
10:37 pm
separate them with 94 percent of precincts reported. 661 for bernie sanders 671 for hillary clinton. >> less than 1 percent. we're going to be right here and the longer we stay here the longer you keep watching us, the longer everybody stays out tonight. the closer that storm gets. lets let's check in with brad edwards. >> that's right, jack. it's been pretty good timing because the caucuses are winding down, the storm is starting to wind up, getting some light snow developing in western iowa. i think we could see some snow flakes maybe by midnight or so but i think everybody should be home by then. we do have a winter storm warning in effect for the des moines area out toward omaha and up into waterloo. the worst of it is going to be in north western iowa, that is a blizzard warning and they are going to see the worst of it. heavy snow, high wind pretty much most of the day up there and it's going to get bad. it's going to be bad enough
10:38 pm
we'll probably hold around 33, 32 into tomorrow morning. here's the radar right now, i've got the freezing zone, this blue area right here is where it's freezing. we've got precipitation moving in from the south west. the big storm winding up right here, that rain-snow line is going to be setting up right into iowa, coming up just south of des moines. it's going to be a very wet snow. i think there's going to be a lot of problems tomorrow morning we're talking between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. this heavy snow moves in and that could probably cancel some flights maybe at the airport or at least delay them. it's going to be a rough morning anywhere you try to travel in central and northern iowa. as we get later in the day, it will improve. there's going to be some hope if you want to get out the des moines afternoon. clear conditions in the afternoon, even sun shine in south east iowa. i think they could hit the 50s in burlington.
10:39 pm
the north west iowa. a little bit of snow in the tail end of this system. may be five to 7-inches of snow. the latest snow tracker you can see it gives us about 5 or 7-inch, give a couple either way, maybe 3 to 6 here or 7, and then 9-inches, tweive inches, maybe even 15 in sioux city. there in north west iowa with the day. for tonight, snow showers are possible early, heavy snow after 4:00 a.m. the winds will be increasing tonight and the winds will be strong tomorrow morning. thirty-seven will make things better, though, that will be an afternoon high say 4, 5 in the afternoon. here's the 7-day tracker, temperatures are going to get a little bit milder after tomorrow we really don't have any snow in the forecast so it looks good for travelers and good for everyone, i guess here in central iowa. we'll throw it back to you guys for more caucus coverage. >> before we get to the caucus
10:40 pm
know we already have in 30 school closings round our viewing area in central iowa. you can go to our website right now, weareiowa.com for more information on that. let's refresh you on the latest number that we have in. of course we're starting off with the democratic numbers because it's a really close race. 94 percent of precincts reporting, we have again there's been movement, hillary clinton ask bernie sanders are tied again at 50 percent and there you go the number on the bottom represents the amount of delegates that they have, three delegates separate them right now. 94 percent reporting. so still some key precincts out on that one. we're going to keep following this race. >> the republican caucus was decided earlier, the projected spoken. he finished with 28 percent, and then donald trump and marco rubio really very close in that
10:41 pm
13, 1400 votes separating them right now. this is with 98 percent of the precincts reporting and then ben carson at 9 percent, rand paul at 5 percent, jeb bush at 3 percent, that's as deep as we, uh, are going to go the other notable, uh, thing we need to tally on - - tell you on the republican side is that mike huckabee did end his campaign after his low showing tonight. and we do want to catch up again with what's going on at hillary clinton headquarters at drake university. let's check in with paul for the latest. paul? >> all right, yeah, you just saw hillary clinton leave the stage. she said she was, quote, breathing a huge sigh of relief. she said it was an honor to campaign iowa and she continues to talk about what i think a lot of pundits have been calling her progressive, talking about finishing the job of universal health care, talking about making the united states a super power when it came to climate change.
10:42 pm
still trying to build up her progressive credentials. that she's been having to fight on the campaign trail against burn sanders. whether you look at the - - when you look at the numbers it's tough to see - - how the clinton campaign treats the final results once they're certified. at the very least, she feels like tonight was a victory again breathing that huge sigh of relief. of course on to new hampshire where bernie sanders in many polls is shown a huge lead and then of course i think the clinton campaign from what we heard from the national campaign manager earlier today they're really looking ahead to the southern states, the so-called sec states. of course we have to see how the numbers play out again tonight in new hampshire and then throughout the south. for now live on the campus of o drake university. for your local election headquarters. back to you in the studio. >> paul, thanks very much. any way you slice it, you know
10:43 pm
disappointment for hillary tonight if she doesn't win, even as slim a margin it may be because she's got a very big mountain to climb in new hampshire. >> our number just refreshed their delegate count separated by just three, hilly clinton 656, burn assanders at 653. let's head down to capitol square that tightened up again that margin, what do you think doo you make of that? >> it's been an incredible thing to watch we literally just keep refreshing our computers over and over. >> all o of us. >> waiting for two more delegates to show up on the screen. pat, you have a blog that is basically all about democrats and, um, you did endorse hillary clinton so what does this mean for her, where do we go for the rest of the night? >> right. >> it could be awhile until we know and i think the iowa democratic party would be wise to just kind of slow play it at this point and make absolutely sure that they have the numbers
10:44 pm
meeb you've already seen that hillary clinton has declared victory in sorts in a way and bernie sanders in a way, if he doesn't end up winning he was that close and it's meaningful. i wouldn't be surprise fd it takes us u awhile to figure that out. going forward we have a real race. the interesting thing to me is just how on earth hillary clinton fell back into the same scheme of 2008 of hope versus realism, um, and u optimism versus prag mt pragmatism that caused obama to beat her in 08. the same thing has happened with sander he's gotten a lot closer than a lot of people originally thought. that being said, had clinton not devoted so much time and effort
10:45 pm
this time, uh, she would have been beaten badly here tonight. so, you know, in some sense the incredible ground game that hillary clinton built here in iowa over the past nine, ten months did come through for her in a way. because again the turn out we've been hearing all over the state has been massive and it wasn't all just for bernie sanders. there were also a lot of new people coming out for hillary clinton as well. >> taking a live look outside right now, look like a pretty big celebration going on there, that room. let's bring dr. stef p schmidt in this conversation and talk to you about where we go from here meaning the next 12 to 24 hours. >> sure. >> and where the race goes. >> you know, this is horrible because this remind me of the santorum-romney situation. it was really close and then they finally declared someone the winner and it turned out not to be correct. i think you're right that we
10:46 pm
national news media is going to go biserk and the iowa caucuses will be dead. on the other hand, everybody needs to know who won. the media isn't going to stay here to figure out those last few precinct in the last few votes and there may even be a recount. that bernie sanders will say i think those machines didn't work very well ask he always said he thought microsoft might game the system. when i'm looking at bernie sanders and the ground that he has of course the big buzz was that yeah, those young people are really excited but they're not going to go vote for him. he's putting his stakes on people who, you know, don't perform. well, that turned out not to be the case. i'm getting things from my students, from iowa state university of enormous crowds so big they couldn't handle it, the precincts were choked up, they ran out of stuff, i think that's
10:47 pm
those are the next voters. those are the people we need to get out there voting and whether you like bernie sanders or not he got them excited and into the system ex i think that's a great thing. now he's got to go on to new hampshire and perform his magic there. that's what we're looking for. >> this is bernie sanders walking up to the podium right now with his wife following closely behind. you can see he has a big smile on his face, fist pumping in the air. >> fist pumping tonight.
10:48 pm
what he has to say tonight. [cheers and applause] [cheers and applause] >> thank you. iowa, thank you. nine months ago we came to this beautiful city, we had no political organization, we had no money, we had no name recognition, and we were taking on the most powerful political organization in the united states of america.
10:49 pm
like we are in a virtual tie. [cheers and applause] looks like we'll have about half of the iowa delegates.
10:50 pm
to congratulate [inaudible] and the organization for reaching a very different campaign and i want to thank governor o'malley. he should know [inaudible] respect of the american people. if i think about what happened tonight i think the people of iowa have sent a very profound
10:51 pm
establishment, to the economic establishment, and by the way to the media establishment. that is given the enormous crisis facing our country it is just too late for establishment politics. i hear from conservatives, i hear from and that is continue to have a corrupt campaign
10:52 pm
[cheers and applause] worked hard to try to protect the ... i had the privilege of meeting so many who put their live ons the line to defend us and protect our way of life. american democracy of one person, one vote, not billionaires buying elections. i am overwhelmed and i am moved by the fact that millions of people throughout this country have helped volunteer on our
10:53 pm
this campaign three and a half million individual contributions people who went to berniesanders.com. you know what the average contribution was? it was 27-dollars. we do not represent the interest of the billionaire class, wall street, or corporate america. we don't want their money. and i am very proud to tell you that we are the only candidate on the democratic side without a superpac.
10:54 pm
the reason that we have done so well here in iowa the reason i believe we're going to do so well and in the other states that follow the reason is the american people are saying no to a rigged economy. they no longer want to see an economy in which the average american works longer hours for lower wages while almost all new income and wealth is going to the top 1%. what the american people understand is that this country based on ... it is not fair when the top 1/10 of 1 percent today
10:55 pm
the bottom 90 percent. it is not fair when the 20 wealthiest people in this country own more wealth than the bottom half of america. are you guys ready for a radical idea? well, so is america and that radical idea is we are going to create an econ theam eam that works for working families not just the billionaire clas. and yes, when millions of our people are working for salvation wages, we are going to raise the
10:56 pm
hour. and we are going to have [inaudible] for women. this beautiful state of iowa we have spoken to some 75,000 people and in meeting after meeting i hear people standing up ask sayling bernie, i went to college, i graduated college, now i am 60, 80, or 90,000-dollars in debt. that is crazy. people should not be punished financially because they want to get an education. >> well there is bernie sanders speaking live to his supporters at the holiday inn airport in des moines, and he is laying
10:57 pm
he is soaking in the admiration from that raucous crowd there. mean while, as bernie speaks behind the scenes the numbers are still grinding away as those precincts come in one after another after another. and here we sit now with 95 percent of the precincts reporting on the democratic side hillary and bernie 50/50 four delegates separate each other and that's prawb pretty much where we've been for a little while now. extremely close on the democratic side, stephanie. >> yeah, it is incredible. let's take a look at the republicans, though. ted cruz has been named the projected winner, uh, by your local election headquarters. 28 percent there for him, donald trump 24 percent, marco rubio, he was an interesting story tonight he just kept inching closer and closer to come in there at 23 percent. we have 99 percent of precincts reporting right there. jeb bush at 3 percent, and of
10:58 pm
that governor mike huckabee did also say that he is dropping out, suspending his campaign. of course we won the iowa caucuses for the republicans back in 2008 so a very different story for him tonight. we want to head out to projected winner ted cruz's camp at the state fair grounds local 5 krair claire powell is out there right now. he finished speaking, i believe. claire, what's happening now? >> yeah, things are just wrapping up here. we can tell they're still loud. things haven't quieted down whatsoever. senator cruz came on stage with his family, his mom and dad, his wife, representative vander plaast, through the caucuses today. he was not anywhere short of citing that he set a record in history of caucus votes out there today with 41,608. he was very proud of that. he thanks everyone standing with him.
10:59 pm
nationwide, 12,000 of those are just here in iowa alone. really the standing behind him steve king one of the people who looked maybe - - getting y mogul standing behind cruz. we got the hance to speak to him prior to cruz's winning speech. king, he kind of ... he was cracking up, he pulled a spoon out of his pocket and talked about his senator cruz was just one of of the people who was right for the job. he said he was thrilled and it's a step in the right direction. i asked him to ka. and the controversy going back and forth and king said that he regrets that governor made those statements but he said this is a step in the right direction for cruz as he moves on to new hampshire in south carolina. that's what he said. he's looking forward to the
11:00 pm
he thanks everyone with him, including his mom, his dad, and his wife. it the crowd starting to dwindle out, but hundreds of people are out here as cruz for the win. heed that he's looking forward to new hampshire, starting tomorrow, south carolina after that. we'll send it back to you guys. >> all right, claire, thanks a lot. you are watching live coverage of the 2016 iowa caucuses here we want to send it back down to sabrina and amanda and all of owfer our experts to talk about this growing drama with hillary and bernie that's carrying us deep into the evening. >> we love the drama. it's been so exciting and we mentioned this before, we just seriously keep refreshing it. there are some more precincts that haven't reported the numbers yet. stefan, dpn pat, can you talk a little bit about what that means.
11:01 pm
areas that haven't given their numbers yet. >> it looks like there are some important precincts especially to come in. it's hard to look real close hea on the map exactly which ones are theirs. i think some more working class outs. i mean, regardless it's going to come down to. it could be an exact tie, an exact tie. >> wouldn't that be incredible? i don't even know what that mean for the iowa caucus, whether that's good or bad. >> the media won't like it. >> how long do we think it will get drawn out? >> i would hope they get everything in by very late ear or early this morning at the most. >> let's get some final thoughts from you because i know you're blown away, mainly turn out on the republican side. >> turn out is massive. you had
11:02 pm
votes, just blows away the previous number. you have donald trump with almost 45,000. you have marco rubio. i think this completely changes the landscape in new hampshire. i think the new hampshire primary just got incredibly interesting between a battle between trump and rubio and what can cruz do there. this might be a real battle ground for trump. new hampshire might determine his longevity in this entire race. all of a sudden marco marco rubio's going to have a lot of momentum the only thing that's going to aid trump is you might have christie and kasich there who might still pull some votes away.
11:03 pm
up the polls. >> if you look at the map and where the vote's coming frawmg and where ted cruz won, there shouldn't be 50,000 votes there that tells you i mean if you look at mike huckabee and rick santorum's number, it tells you everyone saw the writing on the wall, i want my vote to matter and so i'm going to vote for ted cruz. >> ted krus cruz it is then. pat, give us your kind of final thoughts of what is your take away? i know you're just kind of also blown away by the fact that it's so close. >> i mean it's game on now for the democrats going forward and bernie sanders could very well be the nominee for the democratic party. he's going to the huge crowds we've been seeing in iowa, the enthusiasm, and new people coming out that can happen everywhere else. it happened last time in 2008. sanders has all these big crowds in i iowa but are they going
11:04 pm
we saw that happen last time. >> there stefan schmidt we're going to ask you to pull out your crystal ball and give us a look ahead to the next 12, 24 hours. >> i think it's too bad we can't wrap up both of the races tonight because, you know, leaving that thing hanging there creates a lot of uncertainty and international news media want to finish this up and go home. they are going to go home, but they're not going to go home with this thing wrapped up. i hope these precincts hur thea heck up. i don't know what's the matter with them. >> they might be partying a little too much tonight, i don't know. >> but i think you're right that this thing now goes to new hampshire with a fresh, new impetuous on it. voters in new hampshire, they're very analytical. often they look at iowa and they go i don't think i like what the people in iowa did so you know
11:05 pm
great stuff it may actually have the voters in new hampshire be contrary and do something different. i think rubio, though, is going to be the beneficiary of the establishment of the republican party. he has now proven that he is a really strong candidate and that's a big, huge deal. chris christie is the big victim there in new hampshire. chris christie was banking on that. that was the only place that he could really take off. i think he's basically finished there. hillary clinton has really gotta fight now. she is a fighter. she's organized. she's got a lot of money. she's got the super delegates, many of them behind her. it's not the end of hillary clinton but that campaign has to ramp up and prove that they can do better than they did in iowa against the 74 year old socialist from vermont. give me a break. >> who would have thought a 74 year old socialist from vermont would be winning iowa in 2016. >> noted me, put you could tell the crowds.
11:06 pm
up to minneapolis and has 25,000, packs the auditoriums with a palings that is unbelievable. this is going to be a fabulous, fabulous primary and caucus season because it's going to drag on and we're going to have a lot of fun watching it. >> here's bernie sanders now, i believe that's him buried in his crowd. a lot of people wanting to reach out and shake his hand. i think what i'll remember tonight are the two themes that have been emerging this whole time. one of them turn outs and these candidates who have energized these people on both extremes here in iowa and iowans proved tonight they cared, they were energized and they actually went out to caucus. so we did have those numbers i think which is very impressive and mind blowing too in a sense. the other thing is the whole disrupters we've got bernie sanders and ted cruz and donald trump, thee people who are shaking thing up and we saw how iowans responded tonight.
11:07 pm
>> i want to echo your sentiment on voter turn out. it was incredible to see how many people came. we've been having this call to action whether you're a republican or democrat or young or old to go out, go to the caucuses, to make your voice heard, and people did that in tenfold this time around. it's a huge honor to be able to sit here and read the numbers and see the numbers and be able to analyze it. it's been very fun. >> what are we going to do now? >> i don't know, sleep. >> that's true. get some more sleep maybe ... >> also, i will say i'm just blown away by marco rubio. i have to say i had a feeling he was going to do better than most people assumed and, yeah, so. and looks like we're having a bit of camera issue there. there we go. but, um, you know, it's just been such an exciting thing to >> absolutely. >> we won't ever forget this night and we will definitely also never forget the numbers that came from the democratic
11:08 pm
the next 24 howrs. >> this strengthens the iowa caucuses four years u from now. >> absolutely. >> because we performed better than anyone expected and i think we came up with candidates that the rest of the country can like and follow and that great. in both parties. >> we weeded some out too. >> we weeded some out, we win oad the field. >> we might have cut that republican field in half easily. >> exactly. there was real concentration, which is what the republicans needed and wanted and we gave it to them. >> we gave to them, absolutely. >> i do also want to just thank patton and copyright attorneys here in des moines, they did an absolutely incredible job on being so gracious and wonderful hosting us. thank you very much to ruth anne and her husband. it was so much fun to be a part of it, be in the center of the media frenzy here in capitol square. just i'm going to walk away with a very positive impression of the night. >> yeah, you feel and i think voters home, viewers at home feel like if you participated
11:09 pm
went out and caucused or you just watched our coverage you're a part of history. this is going to make head lines for days, week, maybe even years to come. >> thank you so much for everyone for watching your local election headquarters caucus coverage back to the studios now. >> thanks, ladies. >> thanks to you both. >> it has been an exciting night, we're getting clear picture here and some interesting stories emerging tonight. let's take a look at the latest numbers. 99 percent of precincts reporting on the republican side, of course ted cruz is your local election headquarter projected winner at 28 percent, donald trump still sits at 24 percent, marco rubio at 23 percent. he was a big story tonight, really surging, uh, to narrow that gap between him and donald trump. ben carson is at 9 percent, rand paul 5 percent, and jeb bush 3 percent. >> and then on the democratic side we are far from decided.
11:10 pm
project anything right here right now, 95 percent of the precincts reporting, 50/50 in hillary and bernie and with four delegates separating the two of them. so you're at home, you're asking yourself what is the difference going to be going down here the final 5 percent of the precincts for hillary and bernie. who has an advantage? does anybody have an advantage? are there numbers out there that we can point to at all? let's check in with lucas casey in the instant results center to talk about if there's anything we can grab on to at this point, lucas, that will help us understand what's going to happen from here on out. >> well, i think they've been talking about it down at capitol square. when you look around, you know, there's still ... we still got 82 precincts yet to report. when we've been ducking around counties here, it's 1, 2, here and there, but mostly it's polk county. only 87 percent of precincts are reporting in polk county, that's
11:11 pm
outstanding, that's a quarter. 25 percent of the total precincts yet to report with a margin like this 2/10 just a few delegates between clinton and sanders i think it's going to come down to polk county as soon as we can start seeing these results come forward in polk county with when these remaining 22 precincts. let's zoom in and drill down on polk county if we can get the map to take it. you see some different pocket. um, we've got the brown area is bernie sanders again so he's winning in these areas. this is the drake neighborhood a lot of hillary clinton's, um, scattered out throughout the rest of the county. but just a few, these total 22 remaining precincts left in polk county and like i said that's a quarter of the total precincts remaining throughout the state. so i think rirlgt going to come down to polk county, jack and stephanie. >> thank yoi. we have gotten word from some sources that this race between bernie sanders and hillary
11:12 pm
even tonight so you know this might be one we're going to have to wait on for a little whriel to get that final clear result. >> yeah, and we'll have numbers scrolling even after we leave the air and move on we'll have numbers scrolling at the bottom of your screen for awhile and then of course good morning, iowa will pick it up first thing 5:00 a.m. before then there's going to be a lot of action and it's going to be outside weather-wise. let's check in with chief meteorologist brad edwards. >> you don't want to hear the numbers i'm going to be talking about. maybe we should all just stay and recount those votes. it's going to get bad out there. we're kind of still in the calm before the storm, although the radar is showinga little bit of snow developing, i'll show you that in a second. thirty-three, mostly cloudy skies here in the capitol city, a quiet night out there, and as expected everybody got out and got home safely, no weather problems whatsoever. you see the radar turning blue, snow showers trying to develop. you note us a a hole here, indicative of a dry atmosphere. it's not reaching the ground.
11:13 pm
probably starting to reach the ground in far western i wawvment. we might see a few snow flakes but nothing too impressive until after midnight. road conditions bearing that out. we've got basically dry roads out there, good traveling tonight and probably as i said until midnight and then after that we might see some slippery spots develop. north western iowa, winter storm warning for central and western iowa, up in northeast iowa, these both go until 6:00 a.m. wednesday because even though the snow may stop the wind's still going to blow in some of these areas especially in that blizzard warning area where we could could get a foot or more of snow. our system coming out of the south west, a classic storm system coming out of the south west, it's got the area of low pressure which is going to be tracking along the jet stream and that tends to take it right into iowa. a tough forecast for us all the time because we're on that
11:14 pm
maybe not quite in des moines, but just south east of des moines that rain-snow liep tomorrow. everybody will get a little bit of snow, trying to develop the first wave of moisture coming in. the heavy stuff comes in later, future tracker showing those scattered snow showers not amounting to much tonight. this 2:00 a.m., so probably no problems out there for the most part on the roads. then you get to about 5:00 a.m., this dark blue ominous-looking snow band comes in. this is heavy snow. it might even have thunder in it and we're talking two inch per hour as snow fall. it's very heavy snow and that continues until 9 or 10:00 a.m. here. we've got several hours of heavy snow fall. that's when we're going to get the bulk of our snow fall in the metro and then it eases up. it moves to the north here, if you're traveling north it's going to be a mess all afternoon. if you're traveling eastward, though out of des moines tomorrow afternoon it will get better because temperatures will be warmer and it will be snow-free here threw the afternoon. we get a few rain and snow
11:15 pm
evening hours, a little bit more accumulation could fall there and a little bit more wind as well on the back edge of this system. that's the way it break down hour by hour. by far traveling west and north will be the hardest because of this. heavy snow out west, maybe 9, 10-inches in omaha, and hesky snow in north western iowa. closer to 5-inches in the metro, but it drops off dramatically to the south east of the metro and picks up as you go towards ames. so tonight, snow showers early, then the heavy snow comes in after 4:00 a.m., the low near 32, tomorrow i think we'll get to 37. that could be a saving grace because the roads will become wet again. snow in the morning, the commute in the morning will be treacherous, perhaps. it will be a mainly dry afternoon. the winds dropping off, actually, windy in the morning, then dropping off in the afternoon and then we get into the rest of the week and it actually looks pretty tame. we've got some pretty mild weather temperatures in the 30s. there's no arctic air in the
11:16 pm
could have five days ago cold air coming not really until next week, then we've got some colder air until snow on monday. big day, tomorrow's ground hog's day. i don't think it matters. >> it doesn't. >> it's going to be clouds and sun tomorrow? maybe a little chance of both? >> there will be sun shine in south east iowa, people could probably play golf there, jack. i mean, don't want to tempt it. south east iowa might be like 52 in burlington with partly cloudy skies and then a blizzard in north west iowa. >> unbelievable. >> all right. brad, thanks. we're going to kind of close out caucus night 2016 here in iowa. uh, on the democratic side we know ted cruz is the projected winner on the republican side. on the democratic side some of the democratic insiders are telling us now that we may not have a resolution on that before the end of the night with bernie sanders and hillary clinton so
11:17 pm

[ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: hi, welcome back. still to come, music from old dominion. our next guest is also an oscar winn and one of the greats of all-time you know him from "jaws," "close encounters, "mr. holland's opus," and many more. next up, he stars as a villain named bernie in the tv movie "madoff," it starts wednesday night at 8:00 here on abc. please say hello to richard dreyfuss.
11:21 pm
>> if it makes you feel any better we tell them not to stand because it blocks the cameras. i'm very happy to have you here. >> i am happy to be here. >> jimmy: talking to kate about the awards, were you really hoping to win? at one time you were the youngest ever to win the best actor. >> i knew i was going to win and i was thrilled to death. >> jimmy: you knew? >> i knew it. >> jimmy: how did you know? >> because i sussed it out. >> jimmy: you did the -- >> no, no, no. >> jimmy: calculations? >> my agent called me and said, that was a shock. then i said, who else was nominated? when he told me who else i said, i'm going to win. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: i like that. and you were right. >> i had already won a great dealf money betting against myself a number of years before. on these things? >> oh, people in the biz. >> jimmy: i see.
11:22 pm
>> i bet against myself when i did "the apprenticeship of ditty kravitz." people said i was going to be nominated, i said no, they said yes, i said i bet you, and i was riright and they were wrong.g. so then i figured out richard gerton, marcelo mastrani, woody allen, john travolta. i'm a lock. i'm a lock, i mean -- plauds applause [pplause ] >> jimmy: did you win any money? >> i won a lot of money. >> jimmy: you did. >> yes. then next year -- >> jimmy: what maniacs bet against you? >> the next year i won a lot of money betting -- quick, tell me who won the best actor last year. and the answer was me. and nobody got it. that's how fast people forget. >> jimmy: really. >> yeah. that's a true story. >> jimmy: did that change your life? immediately? when you won that -- >> thebet?
11:23 pm
[ laughter ] the trophy itself. i mean, what was the immediate impact? >> honest to god? you can actually kind of see this on the tape. i went -- i took the award from sylvester stallone and i turned and i went -- and it took me about 15 years to figure out what that was. and it was that i didn't know or care about anyone in that audience. and i hadn't -- i felt like a complete outsider. and i felt that i had won it >> jimmy: really. >> and i felt this kind of stab of anxiety. at that moment. >> jimmy: why do you think you won it too soon? >> because i had nothing to shoot for. i had nothing ahead of me. you know, when i say nothing, i don't litally mean nothing.
11:24 pm
me. >> jimmy: what about all the sex, though, you know? >> that made it better. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: that takes a little of the sting out of it. >> anonymous sex, beautiful womenhrowing themselves at you on central park west -- itt healals. >> jimmy: if you'd brought me to the awards i i would he put it in perspective for you imdiately. who did you bring to that show? >> i brought my girlfriend at the time. and my mother was there. >> jimmy: all right. >> and she 11 statelevitated out of her chair when that happened. >> jimmy: so at least one person you c cared abo in that audience at that time. >> exactly, exactly two. >> jimmy: i have to y, when "close encounters" came out. [ cheers and applause ] that's a movie for me, i've seen it 40 times, i love that movie.
11:25 pm
"titanic." people get a kick out of seeing her and leo. i imagine you can't eat mashed potatoes in public. you can't go to the beach because of "jaws." i mean -- >> yeah, that's why, after awhile, movie stars don't leave their house. because there are those iconic things they can no longer do. >> j jimmy: i saw you once. it was 1987. i was on my first -- rport. >> i remember. you were heavier. >> jimmy: you don't remember. i was actually much thinner. there was a group o baggage handlers screaming "tin man" at you, everyone screaming "tin man," you were cracking up laughing. at that point i'd not really met any celebrities. i'm like, wow, this is a crazy life this guy has. >> i had a friend who was 5'4" and a triple dan martial arts expert. we used to walk around new york
11:26 pm
one day this kid on a bicycle screeched right in front of me. and d robert a of a sudden was in front of me and in the sture and argh! and i -- whoa! all the kid was saying, "hey, jaws! and i thought robert was going to kill him. >> jimmy: jaws claims another victim. this bernie madoff story, i watched this, so interesting. there's so many things i didn't know about this guy. i had -- you know, i should readad more. but your depiction of him. i didn't realize, i thought maybe he was a guy that got in over his head. but he really was a very bad -- is a very bad guy. >> bad. sociopathological, crippling sick, psychotic man. >> jimmy: someone who knows that this is going to end badly.
11:27 pm
it was going to end badly. >> no, he felt that he could probably outlast the world. as a matter of ct, we had a scene at one point where it was the towers. the day the towers fell. and you hear bernie saying, "this is how it all ends. everybody dies. and i get away with it." >> jimmy: wow. >> and that's what he thought. and he didn't care whether he didn't or not. it's like in othello, thiago steps to the audience, looks up at the gods, and says, i love doing this! i love it! and i'm going to keep doing it because it's so much [ bleep ] fun! and i don't care what happens, i'm going to bring him down, her down, everybody! that's thiago, he does it for the doing. he does it for pure evil. and bernie did it for the se reason.
11:28 pm
television in thatail cell. i imagine he'll be able to watch you. >> if he doesn't, someone else does and he can get it from them. >> jimmy: yes, yeah. yeah. it's great to have you here. [ cheers and applause ] "madoff" premieres wednesday a miniseries, it starts wednesday night -- >> two-nighter. the 3rd and 4th of february. so good. and it's not a joke story. it's not -- >> jimmy: not at all, yeah. >> it's desperately serious and people w were desperately harmed by this man. including his own family. and when you watch it, rememr that the head of abc took it from its original date in december andut it in the middle of sweeps week. which is the week that everyone pours money into getting you to watch their network.
11:29 pm
