5 news midday. .we are iowa's most accurate weather team and we start with your forecast first." sam the first major snow storm and blizzard is finally upon us and we are definitely in for a lot of snow and dangerous driving conditions. light snow in the very early morning hours will turn in to very heavy snow through the morning commute and into the early afternoon hours, especially in west and northern iowa. on top of heavy snow amounts there will be a large amount of wind keeping visibility low and causing large drifting especially across less traveled country roads. during the morning hours des moines will see mostly snow but we will be mixing that snow with sleet at times especially on the south side of the city with the heaviest snow falling north of the city. a dry slot will overtake southern and central iowa in the afternoon cutting us off from much of the snow and rain but still allowing for news midday.... with our road warrior for a look at outside. it was a close for the democratic candidates. back at the results.

local five road warrior jacob peklo... how do the roads look so far jacob? jacob: nikki, .... we're looking at jacob: nikki, .... we're looking at quite a storm out here, although the winds have died down a little bit. as you can see right now, the heavy winds have picked up and there's a lot of snow that's blowing across the roadways. if you're going to work today after caucusing last night, you probably wish you didn't have to go in. we're on westown parkway right now. the snow, at this point is kind of packy. if you want to build a fort in your back yard, now is the time to do it. i'd say there's at least four inches down right now. nikki:

conditions are not the only thing being affected by the incoming storm today... nikki: as schools announce closings ....today's snowfall has also prompted a delay for some special elections. secretary of state paul pate announced that the polls in these 17 counties will not open at seven a-m like planned. due to the weather, polling sites in these counties will open up at noon. the secretary of state's office says they will send out another notice if they need to delay anymore county elections. nikki: also developing now...a car versus pedestrian accident leaves one man dead... nikki: west des moines police say the man was hit while trying to cross the street near a pair of caucus sites. police were called out to the 7-thousand block of ashworth road, near saint francis church, just before 7 o'clock last night,

stepped into the roadway, as a truck was passing by. the area doesn't have any crosswalks or signals for pedestrians. authorities say the driver thought he'd hit a deer, and pulled over to the side of the road. officer jason lichty, west des moines police dept. "at this point, according to witnesses, it sounds like he was driving normal traffic speed, maintaining a normal speed in his lane and there was nothing he could do to avoid the accident." nikki: the name of the man is not being released, pending family notification. the driver has now been identified as 55 year-old urbandale resident robert irving who was uninjured. nikki: let's get into our big story this morning....a very close race in the iowa caucus... nikki: this morning the hillary clinton camp has declared a win for the democratic frontrunner... as the numbers came in last night, it looked more like a virtual tie for clinton and her main rival bernie sanders. clinton held a lead that was less than one percent...much different than the republican caucus results. here's a look at the numbers....which were still being tallied until just over an hour ago... local five political analyst brent roske
