sabrina elias: well time now for another short break... but when we come back... 20-15 turned out to be a crazy year for cyclone athletics...and the man in charge talks about the past...and his game plan for 20-16 with local five... ...but first here's what happened last night on
6:18 am
"you're watching good morning iowa in hd. we are iowa." elias: 2015 was a roller coaster of emotions for the iowa state athletic department especially when it comes to basketball and football. local 5 sports director jon schaeffer sat down with athletic director jamie pollard to talk about 2015 and what we can expect for this year. " the year didn't start the way jamie pollard expected-- he suffered a heart attack which is admittedly something he doesn't think about much these days.
6:19 am
championships it was on to the ncaa tournament where the hope was high-- but reality didn't live up to it. now the ncaa tournament didn't go as iowa state had hoped it would with a first round loss to uab what was your reaction to that? well it was disappointing for everybody because you were still living on the high of the big 12 championship and then we drew that first game the thursday game and you're early on thursday morning and um it was like it was over before it ever started and like a bad learn in athletics whether you want it to that in the memory bank and moved on." pollard then watched on that spring as the mayor-- fred hoiberg chicago bulls. that meant replacing one of the most beloved coaches in he chose murray state head coach steve prohm. "he was the perfect person to follow extremely humble.
6:20 am
have run from fred's legacy because it would be stifling. and he's been able to embrace it. and work with it." then the attention turned to the football season. paul rhoads was under pressure to find success from the iowa state fan base. unfortunately-- the program didn't make the turn in the right direction. rhoads went 3-9 before being let go. "coach rhoads is a great football coach but that friendship piece makes it easier and harder. it's easier because we are so close that you were able to just work through it in a way that was good for everybody involved." "in less than two weeks pollard had already gotten the guy he wanted. toledo head coach matt campbell who fit the mentality of what it takes to coach at iowa state. "he wanted to be at a place where if we won a championship he would be the first there were places he could have went where they would say when we win a championship this is what you do. that's not the kind of environment he wanted to be at he wanted to be at something where he
6:21 am
kind of our mantra in our athletics department so he fit that." so expectations for 2016 couldn't be bigger from fans in both basketball and football. in 2016 is it too much for fans to expect a sweet 16 basketball team and a bowl bound football team? "absolutely not. that's what our coaches and our administration aspires to do i think we'd all be disappointed if we weren't in the you know got to that level in basketball with the team that we have this year. i do recognize it's hard but we are clearly one of the top 16 teams in the country and so i hope that happens. as far as a bowl game that's our goal every year that'll be no different for next year. elias: time for another break... coming up sam's in with central iowa's most accurate forecast...

elias: the investigation continues into a house fire in nevadae... elias: fire crews responded to the fire early thursday morning... investigators initially described the blaze at a home on the 800 block of north avenue as suspicious. as firefighters moved in to fight the flames, they found the body of 36 year-old adam blazek. police say the rest of his family was not home at the time. "the fire itself is suspicious only because of the markings and the indicators that are there. we have people on the scene still processing it. we'll make a determination later once we get everything together." elias: inestigators are still piecing together exactly what happened inside of the home. elias: we are also following the case of a metro teacher...who has been accused of exposing himself to a female employee of valley west mall... former lincoln high school teacher michael madson has been questioned by police reguarding the accusations. local 5 went to
6:26 am
the case, but no one answered. the des moines school district says madson was immediately put on administrative leave after the incident and was not allowed to return to school. he resigned his position on tuesday. elias: new this morning, ankeny leaders taking steps to keep up with the city's growth... elias: the city is closer to building a new library and council chambers. the project will cost between $15 and $17 million dollars. the money will come from three funding sources -- capital reserves, civic trust funds and a bond that must be approved by voters. city leaders say it's the right time to make the move, since ankeny's population continues to grow so fast. david jones, ankeny city manager: "our library is about half the size of comparable communities' library, and it was time to address that and some of the critical needs in the city and this plan will do that." elias: ankeny city council has approved a plan that would start
6:27 am
with city buildings. the current library will be renovated and house other city offices once the new facility is done. elias: many hawkeye fans would probably like to forget about the rosebowl... but an iowa lawmaker isn't letting it go. it wasn't the lopsided score of the ballgame with stanford that angers him - but the halftime show. maybe you saw part of it, the marching band that took the field basically making fun of iowa. there was a larger-than-life cow running around, and band members poking fun at farmers. a republican senator wants to pass a law requiring stanford to make a formal apology. " 40:51 what it says - future collarboaration between stanford and regents universities whould be put on hold until that apology's made publicly." elias: chelgren says he's a hawkeye fan, but he's not a sore loser - he says this bill is about the band and their halftime performance
6:28 am
idependent of the football teams. chelgren says the bill is a way to patch up - what could be long term animosity between stanford and the state of iowa. other lawmakers don't antipate the bill getting very far at all. elias: we're back with meterologist sam schreier... sam: (sam adlibs) sam: sam: weather adlib: it's finally friday and we're looking at a fairly mild and average february day. we'll be overcast with a lighter breeze out of the west keeping our highs right around 32 degrees. there will be a few flurries to a light dusting that will likely swing through northern and possibly central iowa this afternoon, so while a

democratic presidential hopefuls, their last debate before the new hampshire primary was the most spirited one yet. hillary clinton and bernie sanders battled over their records on a host of issues and defended against each other's attack lines on the campaign trail. abc's bazi kanani has more.
