" local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" stephanie: the polls closed at six. and just an hour later and both cnn and abc have projected the winners of the new hampshire primary. stephanie: donald trump and bernie sanders projected as winning tonight. both with commanding leads over the other candidates. stephanie/2ram good evening. i'm stephanie angleson. jack/2ram and i'm jack miller. iowans are the first in the nation to pick who they want in the oval office. up next, new hampshire. tonight some surprising and not so suprising results. stephanie: but the big question tonight, is with different outcomes on the republican side in both states, how does this shape the race leading up to super tuesday? stephanie:

davidson joins us now with more on the primaries.. nikki? nikki: early on winners were called in both races tonight.... both trump and sanders stood out from their rivals with leads so large that they were announced the winners with a small percentage of polls reporting... sanders win is no big suprrise... and since trump took the republican win early on... a lot of people were watching who would take second and third place... ohio govenor john kasich took that second place spot... while the race for third place is close between cruz and bush... it could be a big victory for some... and for others it could mean death to their campaigns.... low performers could drop out and we are watching for that tonight.... and even though every major news outlet called the winners early on... nikki: lets take at the latest numbers from new hampshire nikki: like we mentioned before, bernie sanders took new hampshire tonight. hillary clinton says that she is now focusing her campigan on march... and those super tuesday states that will represent many more delegtates.... and she's remaining very hopeful at this point. nikki: on the republican side

on as well. ohio governor john kasich came in second. the race for third has been between three men all night--jeb bush, ted cruz and marco rubio. chris christie, carly fiorina, and ben carson rounding out the bottom with less than 10 percent of the polls each. nikki: local 5 is your election headquarters, tonight our sister stations in new hampshire talked to voters about their decisions and why their primary night is important. many of whom were making their final decisions just an hour before the polls. white house.... south carolina and neveda.... followed by super tuesday which is march 1st... reporting in your digital media center, i'm nikki davidson local five news we are iowa. jack: we'll continue to update you on the new hampshire primaries as more final results come in. for the latest numbers head to our website, that's we are iowa dot com. stephanie: new tonight at 10, a man was unable to get out of his burning home in time. stephanie: it happened here ... on 61st street in des moines. fire crews were called there around 6:45 tonight. there, they found smoke coming out to front and back of the house. firefighters went in the front door and that's when they found the victim, a man in his 30's. no cause has been found yet and teh des moijes police and fire departments are investigating. "we conducted a

noticed that there was a victim of this fire that was unable to make it out and injuries were such that it was obvious that it was a fire fatality " stephanie: this was the second deadly fire in des moines today. jack: tonight we have new details on another fire that put crews in danger and left one man dead overnight. jack: it happened shortly after midnight on 59th street in des moines. police were called to the home twice last night for noise complaints. officers evetually tried to make contact with a man inside the house-- 48 year old neil johnston. police say johnston refused to leave the home, and then threatened officers and told them he had a gun. 2:36:05 he was running from room to room, he threatened them, made threats he was armed with a firearm. and made physical motions as if he was pointing the firearm. jack: shortly after, a fire broke out inside that home.

get johnston out, but had to back off because of the fire and smoke. and the fire department couldn't go inside until the threat of violence was over. " 2:37:07 we aren't epuipped to deal with flame, heat, smoke. we don't have the tools they have, they aren't equipped to deal with the threat of violence. we worked as far as we could." jack: by the time that crews got inside the home, johnston was already dead. that fire is considered intentional right now, but a final cause hasn't been determined. and police aren't releasing any details yet about how or why neil johnston was causing a disturbance in the neighborhood. stephanie: medical marijuana is once again a hot topic at the statehouse. new legislation would make it easier for iowans to get it. and this bill has support from both democrats and republicans. local five's chief political correspondent amanda krenz has more on this statehouse matters.

the law iowa passed to give families premission to have medical cannabis is not the same as giving families access and that's what they say they need. erin 1:01:53 we're going 8 months without having a seizure which is amazing. erin miller's three year old son, abrahm, has a rare gene mutation that causes seizures. he started taking hemp oil 8 months ago, shipped from colorado. erin 1:03:51 once you have the card, you don't have access to the oil, you have to cross state lines or you order help oil which is working for him. she says the help oil is making a world of difference for her child. 1:02:45 he went from not being able to use fine motor grasp to doing a 9 peice puzzle. hemp oil also helps abrahm sleep through the night, interact with people, and generally make healthy progress. a new study bill in the statehouse will allow for growing and distributing medical marijuana in iowa. it already has bipartisan support. one of the iowa's highest profile christian conservatives speaks in favor of it. vanderplaats: his last bite at the podium

inside senate chambers - democratic leaders say they're following the law when it comes to education funding... and fighting to get money in place for the next two school years. they proposed a 4 percent funding increase for 2018... after hearing from school districts that they've had to delay buying classroom materials, textbooks, and technology. the funding for the 20-18 school year passed along party lines. the senate voted in favor of 4 percent - 26 to 24. the bill now moves on to the republican controlled house. brad: ((ad lib weather toss)) take sot tomorrow on good morning iowa... if you see a penny pick it up... we'll meet a grandmother who has had some good luck from that mantra.. it seems picking up lost change really adds up and sam has a look at your forecast ((:04 wx ad-lib)) that's tomorrow on the all-new good morning iowa!

jack: an unusual crash in a parking lot on the i-s-u campus earlier today is catching the eye

i-s-u police say it happened this morning when a driver lost control and landed their car on top of several parked cars in the parking lot of the armory. the car apparently drove over the sidewalk and onto the parked cars. no one was hurt. police are warning students and the ames community to call them if they see something happen, as the accident was not phoned in. stephanie: the emerald ash borer has been confirmed in iowa city after university of iowa facilities staff found the species on trees around campus. with iowa city on the map, there are now 30 counties in the state confirmed positive for e-a- b, an invasive beetle that destroys ash trees. u of i officials say they have been planning for the onset of the emerald ash borer and therefore have been practicing tree diversification throughout the campus. there are about 560 ash trees on school grounds. jack: natural grocers opened its first location in the metro

customers. the organic foods store is located in the parking lot of the old dahl's grocery store on 86th and hickman in clive. natural grocers offers organic produce and other products, and this location has a "grab and go" station with sandwiches, salads, and other quick items. "you know, the marketplace is growing so quickly because people are becoming more educated as consumers. the more educated people become as consumers, the more they're looking to purchase in sectors like this. so, i really think that...i don't see a risk of that at this point." jack: something different about natural grocers is the groceries themselves. customers have to bring their own grocery bags, buy a reusable bag at the store, or pack their items into boxes near the checkout. stephanie/2shot: the grammy's are less than a week away, and you'll see one des moines band up for an award for the second year in a row. jack/2shot that's right -

jon: welcome back we're one week closer to district tournaments for boys basketball. that means teams are looking to tune up. ankeny moved up a spot this week in the polls while north is knocking on the door of the boys 4a top 10. the two meeting tonight on the north side of des moines. and the polar bears get rolling with tyreke locure-- the freshman hitting threes at a senior level tonight. back comes ankeny trystan cummins with the triple of his own splashing the twine... but locure flashing the speed-- takes it
