urbandale hotel where a police officer fired his gun. nikki and a supreme court justice dies. we take a look back on the career of antonin (ska- lee-a) scalia. nikki teaming up to feed the hungry. how local volunteers are lending a helping hand right before valentines day. " local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" nikki: good evening. welcome to local 5 news i'm nikki davidson. glad you're with us tonight. it's a story we've been following all day . nikki: a man has been shot and killed by an urbandale police officer... nikki: it happened inside an urbandale hotel early this morning. police officers first went to the hotel, because of a tip about drugs... but the suspects fought the officers when they arrived. local five's

with more. jacob peklo, weareiowa.com: "investigators spent all morning and most of the afternoon, searching for clues inside a holiday inn in urbandale. their search stems from a late night scuffle that took place inside the hotel lobby, that involved multiple officers and three suspects." sgt. gary lang, urbandale police department: "shortly after 4 this morning, our officers were tripped to the holiday inn at 4800 merle hay road on a drug complaint." but when police arrived, two women and a man started fighting with the officers near the main entrance. sgt. gary lang, urbandale police department: "shortly after they got there, a scuffle started out with a male subject. he ended up firing off one round during the scuffle and our officers returned fire." police say that man died at the scene. and during the scuffle, two women ran away. several other police departments were called as backup, and helped arrest the women about half a mile down the road. sgt. gary lang, urbandale police department: "everything happened really fast." authorities say it's going to be an extensive investigation, which includes dci, the polk county medical examiner, and attorney's office and urbandale police detectives. sgt. gary lang, urbandale police department: "it's an

shooting, with a death, so we have to make sure everything is covered, that everything is done right." it also includes an internal review to make sure that the officers followed correct protocol during the fight. sgt. gary lang, urbandale police department: "video evidence is a key to any crime and investigation and our officers have been wearing body cameras for quite some time." jacob peklo, weareiowa.com: "there is video evidence of the incident, from both the hotel and officer body cameras. because of the thorough nature of the investigation, that video will likely not be released until the case goes to trial. in the studio, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa." nikki the names of the suspects and the officers are not being released at this time. investigators are expected to hold a joint press conference early next week, where they could release more information. nikki/1 shot: a thirteen year old boy has been killed in a single vehicle rollover crash near fort dodge... it happened this afternoon and sent five other people to the hospital. a van was driving westbound on 170th street and taylor avenue in webster county... thats just three

when it went off the road into the ditch and rolled several times. the webster county sheriffs office says multiple people were ejected from the vehicle... 13 year old duane touney was pronounced dead on scene... the driver was an adult... and many in the car were young family members. all five are in the hospital and are expected to survive. the cause of the crash is still under investigation but it is not believed that weather conditions, drugs or alcohol played a factor. nikki/1 shot: over near maxwell, iowa state patrol is investigating a second deadly crash involving a teenager. 17 year old chase mohler was driving southbound on 645th avenue when his pickup lost control and went off the road... chase was prounounced dead on scene... his passenger 16 year old william spencer was taken to methodist hospital in des moines. the crash remains under investigation. nikki: police have arrested a man for firing a gun outside of platinum kutz barber shop in des moines. des moines police say 45 year old reginald fitzgerald douglas stood in the

"you got this, keep going! watch the ice! " the 27th annual "red flannel run" kicked off the race season in central iowa today at the wellmark ymca in des moines. both runners and walkers were encouraged to wear those red flannels to support the 2016 ymca annual campaign. awards were given out to overall male and female runners along with prizes for costumes. " "when we started it was pretty cold but once we got going it got really hot for me." "it felt pretty good. i thought it was going to be a lot worse." the money raised from the event provides financial assistance to those in need in the local

spent this valentines day eve packing meals for starving people around the world. the fun, fast- paced event was a good way for employees to bond all while helping a charity. "right now i think they have about a hundered people. they are packing the rice and soy meal which is shipped all over the world. " "it's just great. it's a great team building excercise for them. a holiday weekend with over a hundered people here to help in the month of feburary is phenomenal." nikki: todays goal was enough meals to feed 30 to 40 thousand people... and coming up later this spring... they'll be trying to back a million meals in one week during spring break. nikki: a local 13 year old who lost his year-long battle with leukemia made it his mission to get the word out on blood donation. sam lemar asked to hold a blood drive to replenish the supply he used. lemar also needed a bone marrow transplant leading to today's drive at indian hills junior high school west des moines.
