the iowa department of natural resources says 35-year-old damion louk was in the middle of the line of snowmobiles, when his ski caught deep snow near a culvert. that sent louk and the snowmobile airborne....landin g about 150 feet away. first responders carried him to a nearby hospital. louk was later transferred by helicopter to mercy medical center in des moines. elias: a weekend accident leaves a fort dodge catholic school community in mourning.. elias: a saturday car crash claimed the life of a saint edmond school middle school student authorities say 13 year old duane touney was riding in the car driven by his sister, when she fell asleep behind the wheel. the car then went off the roadway on 170th street and rolled over into a ditch. police say touney's siblings were taken to the hospital, but later released. on sunday, the school opened, to provide counseling to students and parents. mary gibb, president of st. edmond school: "it's very important that the parents are here getting support, because they're going to be the ones at home at night answering

elias: 1963 was a tumultuous year in our country as the civil rights movement heated up. and no where was it hotter than saint augustine florida... a community that was instrumental in the battle for equality. over the past four weeks, local five has been looking at this resolute group of people and their struggle. today we take you back to 19-63 and a piece of america's untold journey. "narr 24 - the year is 1963 and protests have reached a fever pitch on st. augustine. vo narr - there needed to be a new front opened in the fight against segregation, and there was no better place to do leading this fight would be lincolnville dentist and successful businessman, dr. robert hayling. fountains ,,, a dentist and ex-army officer, hayling became the first negro member of the florida state dental society. he joined the civil rights struggle after the dental group was denied meeting facilities at white hotels and restaurants because of his membership. last

badly beaten by kkk members when they ventured too close to a klan rally. ironically, when the case was tried, hayling was convicted of assault on the klansmen. his appeal is now pending. vo narr 24 - inspired by the words of martin luther king, jr., hayling organized local youths and began sending them into local whites-only restaurants. on a hot july day in 1963, 14 year old samuel white, 15- year old audry nell edwards, 16 year old willie carl singleton and 16 year-old joeann anderson went up to the woolworth's lunch counter and tried to order a hamburger and a coke. they were arrested. and later sentenced to one year in reform school. this harsh sentencing of peaceful children drew local and national outrage. putting a new spot light on st. augustine's racial unrest. sot mlk - st. augustine, is merely a symbol of an expression. of the tragedies that engulf our whole nation in the area of race

statehouse...the first deadline for iowa lawmakers comes up friday... sabrina: february 19th will be the first "funnel" day for iowa lawmakers. it's the final date for senate and house bills to be voted out of their respective committees. this morning, we recap some of the hot button issues being debated at the capitol. first up, the fight against governor branstad's medicaid privatization plan. sabrina: last thursday, the senate passed a bill that would terminate the contracts the state has with three companies. but that may be where this bill stops.... house republicans say they will not even consider the bill when it arrives, sabrina: last year education funding turned out to be one of biggest issues...which had lawmakers saying it's a top priority for 20- 16. both the house and senate have plans for the coming school year, but they have not made it very far. looking ahead, the senate passed a bill for a 4 percent increase for the next year...2018. that bill, too, moves on to the house. sabrina:

statehouse... a move to expand medical marijuana in iowa, aimed at making access easier. iowa lawmakers getting involved in concussion safety... a bill would require an athletic trainer to be on hand at any varsity football, soccer, or wrestling event. a new bill would end the public intoxication offense, but does not offer another solution. iowa lawmakers are also considering an increase to speed limits of rural two-lane highways...movin g them from 55, up to 60 or 65. and there are two proposals looking to reform health coverage for families with autism. sabrina: with the governor's medicaid plan just over two- weeks away, some iowans continue to have questions about this change questions about this change over... today's moral mondays iowa will focus on the privatization of medicaid.. currently, one in five iowans depends on this program for their health and long-term care needs iowa senator janet petersen will join doctor deborah turner

" script: (hughes intro) (pkg) within an hour of the supreme court confirming scalia's death senate majority leader mitch mcconnell declared "this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president." president obama made it clear he's ready to move. sot obama: i plan to fulfill my constitutional responsibilities to nominate a successor. both parties have reason to fight for who gets to make the nominations, because of how it could shift balance on the supreme court, which, without scalia, is split 4 and 4. and that adds a new dimension to this year's presidential race. hillary: it is outrageous that republicans in the senate and on the campaign trail have already pledged to block any replacement that president obama nominates. republicans backing up mcconnell in saturday night's debate-. trump: it's called delay, delay, delay.

fighting with them. during the scuffle, a man shot at the officers, and an officer returned fire, killing that man. authorities say video from officer body cameras and the hotel will be big parts of the case. "sgt. gary lang, urbandale police department: "video evidence is a key to any crime and investigation and our officers have been wearing body cameras for quite some time." " sabrina: the name of the officer and the suspects are not being released at this time. two female suspects fled from the scene during the fight and were arrested about half a mile down the road. multiple agencies were called in to assist. called in to assist. elias: a bus driver accused of hitting an iowa state student is set to appear in court today... elias: i-s-u freshman emmalee jacobs died after being strycj by a vheicle in december.. benjamin clague was arrested january 20th after survelliance video inside his cy-ride bus suggested he hit her. a criminal complaint later showed, clague had heard a thud but kept going
