elias: supreme court justice antonin scalia has died... the 79-year-old passed away in his sleep during a hunting trip in texas. justice scalia was appointed by president ronald reagan in 1986....developing a reputation as a reliable conservative voice on the high court. his death has sparked what will be a major political battle...as republican leaders call for the appointment of his successor to be made by the next president....while president obama makes plans to nominate an individual in due time. sabrina: in the number two spot this morning... urbandale police investigating a results in a man being shot and killed by an officer. officials say the tip sent the officers to a holiday inn around 4-am sunday. when they arrived, a fight suspects....one police. officers

access, and legislation aimed at protecting iowa's high school athletes against concussions. sabrina: new this morning, a snowmobile accident leaves one man seriously injured sunday... sabrina: the man had been part of group snowmobiling west of boone sunday afternoon along highway 30... the iowa department of natural resources says 35-year-old damion louk was in the middle of the line of snowmobiles, when his ski caught deep snow near a culvert. that sent louk and the snowmobile airborne....landin g about 150 feet away. first responders carried him to a nearby hospital. louk was later transferred by helicopter to mercy medical center in des moines. elias: a weekend accident leaves a fort dodge catholic school community in mourning.. elias: a saturday car crash claimed the life of a saint edmond school middle school student authorities say 13 year old duane touney was riding in the car driven by his sister, when she fell asleep behind the wheel. the car then went off the roadway on 170th street and

the battle for equality. over the past four weeks, local five has been looking at this resolute group of people and their struggle. today we take you back to 19-63 and a piece of america's untold journey. "narr 24 - the year is 1963 and protests have reached a fever pitch on st. augustine. vo narr - there needed to be a new front opened in the fight against segregation, and there was no better place to do leading this fight would be lincolnville dentist and successful businessman, dr. robert hayling. fountains ,,, a dentist and ex-army officer, hayling became the first negro member of the florida state dental society. he joined the civil rights struggle after the dental group was denied meeting facilities at white hotels and restaurants because of his membership. last summer, dr. hayling and an associate were badly beaten by kkk members when they ventured too close to a klan rally. ironically, when the case was tried, hayling was convicted of assault on the klansmen. his appeal is now pending. vo narr 24 - inspired by the words of martin luther king, jr., hayling organized local youths and

sabrina: at the statehouse...the first deadline for iowa lawmakers comes up friday... sabrina: february 19th will be the first "funnel" day for iowa lawmakers. it's the final date for senate and house bills to be voted out of their respective committees. this morning, we recap some of the hot button issues being debated at the capitol. first up, the fight against governor branstad's medicaid privatization plan. sabrina: last thursday, the senate passed a bill that would terminate the contracts the state has with three companies. but that may be where this bill stops.... house republicans say they will not even consider the bill when it arrives, sabrina: last year education funding turned out to be one of biggest issues...which had lawmakers saying it's a top priority for 20- 16. both the house and senate have plans for the coming school year, but they

very far. looking ahead, the senate passed a bill for a 4 percent increase for the next year...2018. that bill, too, moves on to the house. sabrina: some other big issues at the statehouse... a move to expand medical marijuana in iowa, aimed at making access easier. iowa lawmakers getting involved in concussion safety... a bill would require an athletic trainer to be on hand at any varsity football, soccer, or wrestling event. a new bill would end the public intoxication offense, but does not offer another solution. iowa lawmakers are also considering an increase to speed limits of rural two-lane highways...movin g them from 55, up to 60 or 65. and there are two proposals looking to reform health coverage for families with autism. sabrina: with the governor's medicaid plan just over two- weeks away, some iowans continue to have questions about

"sgt. gary lang, urbandale police department: "video evidence is a key to any crime and investigation and our officers have been wearing body cameras for quite some time."
