5 news midday. .we are iowa's most accurate weather team and we start with your forecast first." sam after a brutal weekend of snow and deep cold air, we are turning up the heat in the forecast, but we do have to wait a couple days. today is going to be mostly cloudy but temperatures should be able to warm above freezing, which means we are looking at some good snow melt today. highs will climb into the upper 30s and then lows tonight will fall down to a low near 30. a system is going to pass through the state tonight into tomorrow morning and should bring us a wide range of precipitation. we'll start out with a pretty good amount of rain overnight and as we go towards tomorrow morning some of that rain will turn into freezing rain. on local five news midday.... the driver involved in the hit and run that killed one isu freshman is due in court today. sabrina: with the passing of supreme court justice antonin scalia, president obama

"local 5 news midday in hd starts now. we are iowa" sabrina good morning and thanks for joining us for midday...i'm sabrina: today there was a fatal morning. it happened just a semi truck northbound on i-35 jack-knifed. killing the driver of the semi. officials have confirmed that it was a single occupant accident, traffic had to be 56 to highway 28 at martensdale to get into the traffic resumed around 6:45 this morning. sabrina: shooting up in sunday evening. the 100 block of at around 8 pm two people were

the victim was air lifted to the des moines hospital. the suspect was taken to a hospital in fort dodge. the names of the victim and the suspect are not being released at the time, pending further investigation. sabrina: new this morning, a snowmobile accident leaves one man seriously injured sunday... sabrina: the man had been part of group snowmobiling west of boone sunday afternoon along highway 30... the iowa department of natural resources says 35-year-old damion louk was in the middle of the line of snowmobiles, when his ski caught deep snow near a culvert. that sent louk and the snowmobile airborne....landin g about 150 feet away. first responders carried him to a nearby hospital. louk was later transferred by helicopter to mercy medical center in des moines. sabrina: a weekend accident leaves a fort dodge catholic school community in mourning.. sabrina: a saturday car crash claimed the life of a saint edmond school middle school student authorities say 13 year old duane touney

sister, when she fell asleep behind the wheel. the car then went off the roadway on 170th street and rolled over into a ditch. police say touney's siblings were taken to the hospital, but later released. on sunday, the school opened, to provide counseling to students and parents. mary gibb, president of st. edmond school: "it's very important that the parents are here getting support, because they're going to be the ones at home at night answering their questions about why." sabrina: the school will continue to offer grief counseling services throughout the week, and as long as students request it. sabrina: also developing now in urbandale...a police investigation ends up with one man being shot by police... sabrina: officers responded to a drug tip at an urbandale holiday inn about four-a-m sunday.... when they got there, three suspects began fighting with them. during the scuffle, a man shot at the officers, and an officer returned fire, killing that man. authorities say video from officer body cameras and the hotel will be big parts of the case.

" sabrina: the name of the officer and the at this time. two female suspects fled from the scene and were arrested about the road. agencies were called in to assist. accused of plead not guilty this morning... sabrina: i-s-u freshman emmalee jacobs died after being struck by a vehicle in december.. benjamin cgue january 20th survelliance video inside his cy-ride bus suggested he hit her. complaint later showed, clague but kept going later that he hit jacobs. clague could years in prison. and today he submitted a written arraignment, pleading not guilty. clague's pre- trial conference is set for march 22. and his jury trial is set for april 5.

return rapidly with highs in the low stick around through saturday! sabrina: statehouse now...the first iowa lawmakers comes up friday... sabrina: february 19th will be the first "funnel" day for iowa lawmakers. it's the final date for senate and house bills to be voted out of their respective committees. this morning, we recap some of the hot button issues being debated at the capitol. first up, the fight against governor branstad's medicaid privatization plan. sabrina: last thursday, the senate passed a bill that would terminate the contracts the state has with three companies. but that may be where this bill stops.... house

the bill when it arrives, sabrina: education out to be one of issues...which had lawmakers priority for 20- 16. both the house plans for the coming school year, but they have not made it looking ahead, passed a bill for a 4 percent increase for the that bill, too, moves on to the house. sabrina: some other big issues at the statehouse... a move to expand medical marijuana in iowa, aimed at making access easier. iowa lawmakers getting involved in concussion safety... a bill would require an athletic trainer to be on hand at any varsity football, soccer, or wrestling event. a new bill would end the public intoxication offense, but does not offer another solution. iowa lawmakers are also considering an increase to speed limits of rural two-lane highways...movin g them from 55, up to 60 or 65. and there are two proposals

arl the animal rescue league of iowa (arl) is iowa's largest nonprofit animal shelter, caring for many thousands of pets each year. the arl serves people and pets from across the state of iowa through its programs, which

behavior training, spay/neuter, animal cruelty intervention and much more. history the arl has grown dramatically since its founding in 1926 - expanding its programs that serve both people and homeless animals across iowa. the most obvious growth is the number of animals the arl provides shelter year. intakes have increased from a few thousand animals a than 15,000 animals in 2013. through our proactive community outreach and spay/neuter programs, in the past few years we have begun to see a decrease in the number of animals we care for, but our work is far from over. other areas of growth include the arl's programs designed specifically to address the reasons animals end up in shelters, including spay/neuter, behavior training, and humane education programs. the arl's positive reinforcement training program has
