" local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" "whistle slap " stephanie: state wrestling is underway at the well. and a hot topic at the state house is also resonating on the mats tonight. stephanie/2shot good evening.i'm stephanie angleson. jack/2shot and i'm jack miller. a proposed bill at the statehouse is causing commotion tonight at the state wrestling tournament. if passed, the bill would require every school district to pay an athletic certain varsity sports events. jack: local 5's claire powell met with school leaders tonight and joins us from wells fargo center with more in tonight's big story. "its the biggest week for iowa wrestling but on alot of minds- athletes, athletic is actually safety and what a new iowa bill could mean for their sport and schools" to make it to state wrestlers take a beating. dangers that come

"you knwo as ad's we love the idea, we'd also love the support to get that done and get invovled in the conversations on how we can provide that" jim boehmer - grant's dad and lake mill's athletic director- says there's more than one problem. how to provide a trainer for everyone- especially rural schools. why just varsity sports? and on why no funding? "will it cost our school 5,000? thats not something we can eat" others says its a step in the right direction but not the perfect solution.

think! the contact information is on your screen. stephanie/ram pope francis just finished a cross-border mass in mexico and el paso texas. this is the pope's last stop on his historic six-day trip through mexico. during mass, he addressed the issue of immigration, calling the situation a humanitarian crisis local 5's anna wiernicki has more from el paso. pope francis never actually crossed the texas-mexico border today, but his much anticipated visit to the area was felt on both sides of the borderland. right before pope francis started holy mass this evening, he walked over to the border and prayed with hundreds of immigrants, now living in the u-s. the holy mass itself was simulcasted in el stadium, where the gestures to the issue of immigration, calling nearly 250,000 in the fairgrounds for the end to deaths and exploitation. but before he even arrived at the fairgrounds, pope he stopped by a nearby prison where he met and prayed with

broadcast. jack: new tonight at 10, a man wanted for attempted murder is caught at wal-mart. jack: jeremy werneburg was wanted for the attempted murder of a man in sac county. earlier today, fort dodge police were tipped off that werneburg might be in town. they went to the walmart on first avenue. when the officer tried to arrest him, werneburg started a fight. now he can add assault on an officer to his charges. he's being held in the webster county jail. jack: angry parents cause a security problem at an iowa school this morning. two angry parents came to the collins- maxwell middle and high schools. police say they threatened several staff members. both schools then increased security, though police say it was not a lockdown. it's not clear why they were mad. one of the parents was picked up on a warrant a few hours later. his warrant was from texas and is unrelated to this case. so far there are no charges. stephanie: it took half a year to make an arrest... but today west des moines police say they know who

raccoon river drive. stephanie: in august, the body of 21-year- old daulton holly from tennessee was found along the road. since then, police had been looking for the car involved, even offering a thousand dollar reward. 37 year-old ronald hauser from van meter has now turned himself in to police he's charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and o-w-i. hauser is out on bond. stephanie: and new information now on a 2006 case out of ottumwa in which two men allegedly lit a house on fire, killing two people. christopher yenger and zachary dye submitted written pleas of not guilty today and asked for a speedy trial. we reported back in january that after 10 years of no movement on the case, the two men were arrested by wapello deputies for the murders of nathan messer and seth anderson. the initial investigation was unable to pinpoint a cause of the fire. new information told police that the fire was started intentionally. jack:

-- should the u-s be able to force a tech company to hack its own code? jack: a federal judge wants is ordering apple do just that. the fbi wants apple to create software to help crack an iphone used by one of the san bernardino attackers. the bureau has been unable to get into sayed farook's iphone 5c. after 10 unsuccessful attempts, the phone would automatically erase key data and make the phone permanently inaccessible. but apple says creating the hack, which doesn't exist now, would endanger the data security of all of its customers. "josh earnest:they are not asking apple to redesign its product or to create a new backdoor to one of their products. they're simply asking for something that would have an impact on this one device." jack: investigators want to get the information from farook's phone to see who else may have been involved in the december 2 terror attack that left 14 people dead. apple ceo tim cook says his

today, february 17th, is the deadline for people to pick which private company they want to manage their healthcare. but there's a major hiccup for people who have to make this choice. stephanie: their doctor might not be signed up with the same company they choose. right now, only 60 percent of the providers in the state have signed on with all three. local five heard from the feds today for the first time about the progress of the medicaid transition--they have yet to approve the switch. here's what they said, "we do not have anything new regarding medicaid's transition at this time. we can keep you in the loop as developments arise." stephanie: continuing at the statehouse, a medical marijuana bill is gaining traction during funnel week. stephanie the bill would expand iowans' access to medical cannabis. and groups of iowans advocated for growing and selling cannabis in iowa today at the capitol. the bill needs to pass one more committee to survive. jack: iowans are making domestic violence an issue for lawmakers this week. members of

sexual assault programs from across the state asked lawmakers to support bills that will protect sexual violence survivors. "beth barnhill iowa coalition against domestic assault - currently that's only avaiable to domestic violence survivors...if they choose to do so. " jack: tomorrow night on local 5, hear from a mom fighting for a new law in memory of her daughter, who was murdered by an abusive husband. that story airs thursday at 10. jack: it looks like the death with dignity act won't move forward this year, despite groups of suffering iowans gathering at the capitol recently to promote the idea. the act would have given those suffereing from terminal illness the choice of euthenasia or assisted suicide. stephanie: jon here now and the iowa hawkeyes may be in panic mode? jon: yeah stephanie what was supposed to be a run away win well it turned into a humbling night coming up on local 5 sports
