temperatures mean an end to the ice fishing season... today was the deadline to remove any man-made ice sheds off of the waters, before getting fined by the d-n-r. department officials say overall, the thickness of the ice has stayed the same... but the strength of the ice has deteroriated.... they say if the ice near the shoreline is breaking down, it's usually a sign that it's all weakening. central iowa is quickly running out of places where people can go ice fishing. matt bruner, state conservation officer: "when you get down to our area here in central iowa, it's clear that the ice is deteriorated enough that we don't have ice fishermen out. we don't recommend that people being out ice skating or ice fishing on the lake, and farther south, it's even worse." nikki: coming up tonight at ten, local 5 will take you back to the lake to hear from an angler about his first day on big creek lake. we'll also have more tips on where you can still quench your thirst for ice fishing. been out on the ice? we want to hear about the ice conditions. let us know for a chance to see your comments on-air. you can post

facebook and twitter. or send us an email or give us a call . we'd love to hear what you think! the contact information is on your screen. nikki: it's "championship saturday" in downtown des moines for high school state wrestling. several althetes have their eyes on tonight's prize as the grand march.... that is just getting underway... local 5's jacob peklo is live at wells fargo arena with more. jacob? jacob: nikki, you can feel the electricity in the air. it's hard to find a place to park downtown....and almost as hard to find a place to sit inside the arena. as a chicagoan, i appreciate the feel of this arena. you can understand why this is one of the biggest championships 42 champions will be crowned. this is one of the things iowa is known for, and now the state will soon have a new set of champions. jon will have much more on that, in just a litle bit.

politics on the campaign trail. a winner has been announced for the democratic nevada caucus.... hillary clinton takes the number one spot... with a victory over bernie sanders. sanders and clinton were in a dead heat in the state for days... it is said that clinton relied on a strong turnout from latino voters to secure this win.

on the republican side, the primarys take place tonight in south carolina , donald trump appears to have a big lead over ted cruz in almost every recent south carolina poll. officials expect a record turnout that will beat the 2012 numbers ... when 600 thousand voters showed up. we will catch you up on both races tonight at ten right here on local 5. nikki/1 shot: staying with politics. as many as four thousand people attneded the funeral today for the late supreme court justice antonin (ska-lee-a) scalia. vice president joe biden and his wife along with several other justices were present.. . nikki/ots: welcome back its probably the only time you're going to hear this.... body by bacon... the annual bacon fest is back! the is event recognized as the world's premier bacon festival. bacon lovers from around the world gathered today for bacon sampling, bacon lectures, bacon- inspired dishes, and even a bacon queen contest. it was all about the bacon today.

today at baconfest we have been here celebrating our vip clients as well as hosting our employees, we have been at the kareoke bar celebrating. all those people up there singing amd just giving there glory to the bacon stage. " nikki: bands also took to the stage providing bacon lovers with music. nikki: on the other side of the coin. ve-gan fest! the alternative to baconfest, 'goodsons' in des moines hosted the event where a vegan dish got you in the door. attendees had the opportunity to inform others on animal groups and raise awarness on animal cruelty. their goal? change the mindset from "bacon" to... " you're watching local 5 news at 6 in hd. we are iowa" nikki: welcome back. from playing bags to firing up the grill. tailgating and fun go hand in hand. but you might start finding a new item on the tailgate scene. their called "flickboards" and it's all about family fun. in a world where ipads and video games are many kids' prized posessions, jim braunschweig wanted something simplier for his family, and especially 5-year-old, brady, who loves soccer. jim says, "i google- searched soccer-type board games and there really wasn't anything out there. but i did come across a video somewhere of kids playing with nail and a quarter - some similar stuff - and, i thought, 'i could make that better' and i want to

and then family and friends started to get interested, too. jim says, "the idea for the business started when we found out the adults liked it just as much as the kids did." so was born the adults liked it just as much as the kids did." so was born the flickboard. the name, pretty much explains it all. jim says, "you alternate turns and try to get it across - oooh, i thought you were going to score! - across their goal." sound of saw buzzing before he knew it, jim, along with his dad, jerry, were making flickboards to sell. morningside college, jim's alma mater, gave the okay to use their mustang mascot, and with the help of the university of iowa's venture school program for entrepreneurs, jim was able to get the license to use the hawkeye logo. as sports fans and local game day hot spots start to pick-up on the idea, jim hopes the uniqueness of the flickboards will make them a favorite tailgating game and a lasting piece of sports memorablillia.
