along the des moines river, be sure to monitor conditions as chunks of ice moving along the waterway have started to cause ice jams. the warm spring-like temps over the past few days have helped break up ice on rivers. such jams can cause flooding and property damage, several decks in the fort dodge area have been destroyed by the moving ice. sabrina: in the number two spot this morning... sabrina: des moines police may have an answer to the city's first homicide of 20-16. last month, authorities found 71 year old norma jean mcneeley violently murdered. investigators now say d-n-a evidence has linked ali yahi to the crime. yahi was shot and killed by urbandale police just over a week ago at a holiday inn. police strongly believe him to be the only possible suspect. elias: the third thing you need to know before you walk out the door... elias:

whole week of events held in its honor there. sabrina: and one man from that area has found success with his new start-up... and it's definitely a family afair. jenna rehnstrom has the story. in a world where ipads and video games are many kids' prized posessions, jim braunschweig wanted something simplier for his family, and especially 5-year-old, brady, who loves soccer. jim says, "i google- searched soccer-type board games and there really wasn't anything out there. but i did come across a video somewhere of kids playing with nail and a quarter - some similar stuff - and, i thought, 'i could make that better' and i want to make it for my son." it was a hit with brady, and then family and friends started to get interested, too. jim says, "the idea for the business started when we found out the adults liked it just as much as the kids did." so was born the flickboard. the name, pretty much explains it all. jim says, "you alternate turns and try to get it across - oooh, i thought you were going to score! -

sound of saw buzzing before he knew it, jim, along with his dad, jerry, were making flickboards to sell. morningside college, jim's alma mater, gave the okay to use their mustang mascot, and with the help of the university of iowa's venture school program for entrepreneurs, jim was able to get the license to use the hawkeye logo. as sports fans and local game day hot spots start to pick-up on the idea, jim hopes the uniqueness of the flickboards will make them a favorite tailgating game and a lasting piece of sports jim says, "they're not just games, but they're so when you're not playing the game, we hope that these things will find a lasting place in your home or business, hanging on the wall." not to mention the hours of family fun... our top story....an incident in urbandale leads to answers in a des moines homicide investigation. sabrina:: the bizarre twist has helped solve the city's first homicide of the year. the unsolved case of an elderly woman's death has now been connected to last week's incident at an urbandale hotel...where police shot and killed a man in the lobby. sabrina: des moines police say d-n-a evidence has linked ali yahia to the murder of 71 year old norma jean mcneeley. but he won't be charged... because last weekend yahia was shot and killed by urbandale police at a holiday inn. took a couple of weeks to match yahia's blood at crime. they say he stabbed norma jean mcneeley before he was on security video. . "think about the reason we get into the business, this is what we're talking about. no empathy for anyone actions clearly demonstrate he was very violent " " sabrina:

yahia is the only possible local five reached out to urbandale police to see if this impacts their investigation... they told us they hope this new evidence brings closure to the mcneely family, but didn't mention their investigation. three officers remain on leave right now while that shooting is investigated. elias: new this morning...a date has been set for a decision on the bakken pipeline by iowa officials.. elias: after months of public hearings and researching the project, the iowa utilities board has set a date for giving their final decision. iowa is the only remaining state that hasn't given approval on the pipeline, which would connect north dakota to pipeline, which would connect north dakota to illinois....passing diagonally across the hawkeye state. the iowa utilities board will meet either on march 9th or the tenth to give their final say on the permits needed for the pipeline. the almost four-billion dollar project has raised

do simple tasks.....using numerous steps and complicated procedures... elias: such inventions are marvels of engineering...and at one iowa high school...a way for students to test their creativity. dan conradt has more on iowa's first rube goldberg competition. " it might sound like a parody of an old joke, "how many steps does it take to open an umbrella?" the answer might surprise you. "we have 30 steps," said st. ansgar high school senior jesse bless. this is the first time iowa has hosted an official rube goldberg competition. "1986 i believe is when the official rube goldberg started, and iowa has never done one," contest facilitator devin schwiesow told us. "we all had to build a rube goldberg machine, which is a complicated machine with a bunch of steps to complete a simple task," said bless. "their overall task is to open an umbrella," said schwiesow. the rules say the machine had to go through at least 20 steps, but no more
