"local 5 news midday in hd starts now. we are iowa" lucas: good morning and thanks for joining us for local 5 news midday...i'm lucas casey. lucas: with the jury selection completed, day two in the long awaited fuh-zino trial begins this morning. lucas: the case revolves around the 2012 death of emily fazzino... attorneys say nearly 100 potential jurors have been called. her husband, alexander charged with her death four years ago at their home in boone. prosecutors say fazzino hit and the family's bath tub. the trial was delayed five the jury trial was selected this morning. local 5 will keep you updated of any developments in this case. lucas: a big story in the metro....an incident in urbandale leads to answers in a des moines homicide investigation. lucas: the bizarre twist has helped solve the city's first

year. the unsolved case of an elderly woman's death has now been connected to last week's incident at an urbandale hotel...where police shot and killed a man in the lobby. lucas: des moines police say d-n-a evidence has linked ali yahia to the murder of 71 year old norma jean mcneeley. but he won't be charged... because earlier this month, yahia was shot and killed by urbandale police at a holiday inn. police say it took a couple of weeks to match yahia's blood at the scene of the des moines murder. they say he stabbed norma jean mcneeley several times before he was caught leaving on security video. .. "think about the reason we get into the business, this is what we're talking about. no empathy for anyone else, no concious, his actions clearly demonstrate he was very violent " " lucas: police say they strongly believe yahia is the only possible suspect. local five

urbandale police to see if this impacts their investigation... they told us they hope this new evidence brings closure to the mcneely family, but didn't mention their investigation. three officers remain on leave right now while that shooting is investigated. lucas: it may just be a matter of months until des moines police have body cams.. lucas: after more than a year of planning, the chief says they're taking an aggressive approach to have them quickly. they've already purchased a server to hold the video files, and have also developed a lengthy policy with rules and regulations. and now the department has set a goal date of this june to have the cameras in place. the equipment will cost more than a million dollars, paid in part by public and private donations. lucas: new this morning...a date has been set for a decision on the bakken pipeline by iowa officials.. lucas: after months of public hearings and researching the project, the iowa utilities board has set a date for giving their final decision.

that hasn't given approval on the pipeline, which would connect north dakota to illinois....passing diagonally across the hawkeye state. the iowa utilities board will meet on march ninth or tenth to give their final say on the permits needed for the pipeline. the almost four-billion dollar project has raised concerns over the environment and land-owner rights. lucas also new this morning, a local race track shows its support for law enforcement. lucas: this morning, iowa speedway cares - presented a gift to the newton police department.. the charitable arm of the speedway wanted to make a donation to help the department's k-9 unit. newton police have been seeking funds to help in the training and boaring of smokey...an 11- month old border collie mix that was a rescue from the a-r-l. the latest addition to the unit will be trained to focus on drug investigations and tracking humans. lucas: meanwhile back here in iowa-- the warm spring-like temperatures we saw over the past few days

the des moines river. broken up ice is floating downriver and causing ice jams where the river narrows. that backs up the whole river, which can lead to flooding.... the moving ice can also cause property damage. several decks in the fort dodge area were destroyed last night due to the ice. lucas: the centers for disease control issued a report that raised its estimate of the cancer risk from formaldehyde in some laminate flooring. the c-d-c says it could result in between 6 and 30 cancer cases per 100 thousand people exposed to the flooring. it had previously estimated between 2 and 9 cases. lucas: the oscars have been under fire over the lack of diversity...and a new report isn't making it any better... the report found that of more than 11- thousand speaking roles studied...66- point-5 percent were male characters...33- point-5 percent were female... 71-point-7 percent were white... 12-point-2 percent were black and only two-percent of the characters studied were gay... lesbian... or bisexual. women and minorities were also found to be under- represented when looking at the jobs behind the camera. the camera. lucas: and ....today is world - spay - day... with more than two million animals put down in shelters each year...the humane society is using the day to draw attention to the

senior jesse bless. this is the first time iowa has hosted an official rube goldberg competition. "1986 i believe is when the official rube goldberg started, and iowa has never done one," contest facilitator devin schwiesow told us. "we all had to build a rube goldberg machine, which is a complicated machine with a bunch of steps to complete a simple task," said bless. "their overall task is to open an umbrella," said schwiesow. the rules say the machine had to go through at least 20 steps, but no more than 75. "obviously, this is engineering at its core, being able to put steps together to make a process happen," schwiesow said. "it took a lot of trial and error," bless added. "the process from putting it on paper to achieving the goal was the hard part," said schwiesow. but it takes more than just engineering skills. "you have to work as a

lucas: nasa is giving us a look at a history-making cyclone before and after it made landfall. this is a satellite photo of tropical cyclone winston on the day it hit eastern fiji. as a category five hurricane, with over 200 mph wind gusts. it has passed over fiji but has maintained an eye. winston was the first cyclone of that strength to make landfall in fiji in its recorded history. because of the massive storm-- the fiji government declared a state of natural disaster for the next 30 days.
