stephanie: former governor chet culver is back in the political limelight - this time criticizing the state's plan to privatize medicaid. local 5's sabrina ahmed sat down with culver to discuss his views. culver says there needs to be more oversight into the process because private companies are taking over management of iowan's healthcare - and that affects thousands in the state. "but it is happening, i mean, cms approved it. it is happening april first. well, it was supposed to happen january first. there have been so many concerns, so many voices that have been heard, we've had three delays. so, we don't know really what's happening. all we know for sure, that there continued to be a lot of challenges." stephanie: you can check out more of that interview on this week in iowa. sunday at 9:30 am right here on local five. stephanie: new at six- iowa's junior senator is joining senator chuck grassley in the fight against the president.
6:04 pm
shouldn't they? the argument continues over whether or not the senate judiciary committee - headed by iowa's senator chuck grassley - should host hearings for a potential supreme court justice nominee. and now iowa's freshman senator joni ernst is speaking out as well, saying the people should decide, not the president, as they have done in past elections. "in 2014 the voters had a voice and we now have a republican majority. and, so, we do have a republican chair to the judiciary committee, we do have a majority in the senate. and we believe that the people spoke that they weren't going on, so i will go with the most recent election and we will see what 2016 brings. " stephanie: grassley's with the about the republican leadership's denial of hearings... grassley and mitch mcconnell will meet with president obama next tuesday to discuss the issue. stephanie:

out to jack miller , who's been hanging out at the children's cancer connection annual kick-off event in urbandale. he's surrounded by drinks, food, and even a silent auction! jack, how is the night going so far? jack: (adlib, toss to cancer connection package) 13:21 "i couldn't help but to get a little teary eyed that the first camp he was ever going to attend was an oncology camp." 13:28 alissa that's a shocking reality only the parents of a child with cancer will ever understand. it happened to the andersons of st. charles. one day their 8 year old son reagan was the picture of health. the next, his life was threatened and he was dealing with the unpleasant affects of chemotherapy. 4:14 "well i wasn't really happy because i hated the taste and i just did not feel good." 4:19 reagan but children's cancer connection swooped in to help another family understand childhood cancer and support them in the many ways
6:06 pm
maybe the biggest thing they do all year long is provide the camp. 12:38 it didn't cost us a got out of it is so much more than any other camp we could have sent them to 12:45 (((butt to))) 9:14 he was able to go to camp where there are and other kids who are going through cancer just like him 9:23 mike each summer is the best week of the year for most kids with a and even though reagan found out about his cancer only a couple weeks before camp, this intuitive eight year old knew right away that he was somewhere special. 8:43 i was glad because i knew that i wasn't alone and i knew that other people were there to support me 8:50 ((butt to))) 7:38 it was in the middle of trees , so it was really cool when i came out. so it was a bunch of trees and birds and it was really cool. 7:50 reagan and then something
6:07 pm
reagan responded amazingly well to his chemo. so well that he was declared cancer free just three months later, something that's rarely seen. 5:34 it was a few months. we only had to walk in the shoes of cancer for a few months. so to know it didn't have to be a really long drawn out process was just surreal. 5:46 alissa and though reagan's been cancer free for six months now, he won't dare miss camp this year so he can support those who are getting a week-long respite from their cancer battles. 13:42 it just felt like a place to have a blast. it was a blast. 13:46 mike and reagan jack (adlib) toss back to stephanie thanks jack! if you'd like to make a donation to children's cancer connection, you can visit their website - children's cancer website - children's cancer connection dot org. stephanie: coming up on local 5 news at six... polling numbers out of florida are shedding

welcome back last night iowa lost for the third time in four games. it's a feeling all too familiar for hawkeye fans-- a strong start and terrible finish. but they still have time to climb back out of this downturn. with more in iowa city we go to alex giaimo. "a packed black and gold arena could not lift iowa to a win and for the 6th straight time.the hawkeyes fell to the wisconsin badgers. (adam woodbury) ah basketball is very mental. tonight we made to many mistakes and that's what cost us. (giaimo) iowa had 14 turnovers on the night many of which were unforced. (fran mccaffery) we were a little casual with the ball. 6 turnovers is too many 8 is way too many. you know against a team that's playing half court man you know we got to do better than that. (mike gesell) you know just uncharacteristic turnovers things that don't usually happen. (giaimo) multiple times iowa had a 6 point lead in the second half but just couldn't put the game away. the badgers also made an alarming 10 3 pointers. (mike gesell) we are just not getting the stops and not playing defense like we were

hawkeyes scored the fewest points in a game now iowa has last 3 of their last 4 games and is entering the final week of the regular season in a serious (fran mccaffery) they've got to understand we are not asking them to do something they haven't already done. like they've already proven that they can play that way they just got to get back to playing that way. (mike gesell) we know that we are capable of being the best team in the country and we've showed that before and it's not like that left us. we just got to get back to playing that way. (giaimo) in iowa city with your hawkeye headquarters report, i'm alex giaimo. " the hawkeyes will get another chance to rebound sunday against ohio state at 3 p.m. jon: both of the dowling girls basketball co- coaches bob and sharon hansen are stepping down. this coming after dowling was eliminated from the post season earlier this week. bob and sharon hansen have been married for nearly five decades and won 6 state girls basketball titles-- five of which with the maroons. and tallied more

that will be greatly missed around dowling-- and the ciml.. jon: meanwhile-- these next two iowa state mens basketball games will be the last two home games for this senior class outside of naz mitrou-long. one player who has left a big mark these last four years is forward georges niang. never afraid to speak his mind-- and embrace cyclone nation-- it's a tough thought for the leader of this cyclone team that monday will be the last time he steps onto the court in hilton dawning an iowa state jersey. "oh man you're gonna make me cry. playing at hilton has meant everything to me. to think that there's only two games left it just leaves an empty feeling in my stomach just knowing that running outta the tunnel and just having those passionate fans just cheering for you through thick and thin ups and downs. i'm for sure going to miss this place. hopefully i've left enough here that they're going to remember me but this place will always have
