stephanie: tonight...three people confirmed killed dozen injured in described as a workplace shooting in kansas. stephanie/2shot tonight, there are still many questions as to happened. stephanie jack/2shot and i'm jack miller. here's what we know so far about tonight's shooting. our abc affiliate in witicha, kake- tv, is reporting that police identified the shooter as cedric ford. confirmed ford killed three people before he was shot and killed by police. they are also saying 18 people were wounded. stephanie: the shooting happened around 5 tonight in the town of hesston which is about 35 miles north of wichita. witnesses say ford grabbed a gun from his car and went inside the excel industries plant where he worked and started shooting (dylan, employee) "we heard a pop-pop and we just thought it was metal falling on the ground. then the doors opened and people started screaming and running out saying go to the front. then everybody

said no he's out front so everybody started going to the back right over here and then me, my boss and the other employee we work with, we was just standing back there, we really didn't know what was going on." jack: police say that after the shooting at the plant, ford drove away and shot people along the way. stephanie: officers are searching ford's home to learn more about why he may have done this. we'll have more on this shooting tomorrow on good morning iowa. jack: tonight's other big story... a new twist in the water works lawsuit. last january, des moines water works filed a lawsuit against these three iowa counties. the utility company claims county officials there are not managing nitrate levels from farm runoff... and that caused nitrate levels in the raccoon and des moines rivers to skyrocket. jack: new tonight, water works says it'll end the practice of re- dumping those nitrates back into the racoon river after they're removed from des moines' drinking water. local 5's jacob peklo is here with why this is so important in tonight's big
10:04 pm
jacob: des moines water works has been told that it needs to make some changes to the way it disposes of nitrates and chlorides, by 20- 20. but they're hoping to get that all done by this year. and they're not the only ones battling some troublesome nitrate levels. for more than 20 years, des moines water works purified drinking water, by removing nitrates and running them off into the raccoon river. but new environmental standards have forced changes. kevin baskins, iowa dnr spokesman: "it was actually the chlorides that we were more concerned about having an impact on the des moines river than the nitrates themselves." company officials say that excess nitrate will now go to the water treatment plant instead of into the river. that new process will cost about 1-point-3 million dollars to build and around two hundred thousand annually to maintain. kevin baskins, iowa dnr spokesman: "over time, this is going to be something that improves the overall health of the water quality and the river." jacob peklo, reporting: "just down the river, about 80 miles or so, ottumwa is dealing with some similar issues. they had to use a blending process about 200 times during the year." on the phone/mike heffernan, ottumwa

aren't as high as the des moines area, they have been running at about 10 parts per million a majority of the days of the year." for years, ottumwa would only use a blending process about 30 or 40 days a year, to bring drinking water to acceptable standards, but that's changing. city officials say the concentration is about the same as it would be if the water came unchanged from des moines. so, they're considering long term treatment plans, including reverse osmosis. on the phone/mike heffernan, ottumwa water works gm: "that system helps take the nitrates out of the water, but it's a very costly system to install and costly to operate." heffernan says that modern farming techniques aren't to blame. on the phone/mike heffernan, ottumwa water works gm: "there's a lot of nitrates that are in the soil, and there are lot of nitrates are in the soil naturally. they don't all come from of nitrates are in the soil naturally. they don't all come from farmers using fertilizer." jacob: bill stowe of des moines water works told me today, the group hasn't gotten bids out or started any construction yet. still, he'd like the process to be done this year. live in the studio, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa. stephanie:
