you are backstage now inside the dolby theater and that's where abc's jason nathanson has been hanging out and jason, what's your big take away from this year? >> reporter: the one thing that i thinkverybody focused on here backstage and during the show and i think a lot of people in the audience, as well are talking about chris rock and they'r'realking about diversity and talking about how well he did. he threaded that needle to talk about these really kind of intense subjects. one of his first jok abo how people didn't protest the lack of oscar diversity in the '60s because they were busy dealing with real things like lynchings. that was a hard hard-core joke. got a lot of jokes but also very serious. he set the tone from the begin. that's what everybody is going to be talking about tomorrow. >> you cover the indust. do you think that the academy will eventually become more diverse in the near future? >> that's a great question because it's so hard. there's so much work to do in changing, moving this big ship

"spotlight" is such a deserving film. i loved it and i'm so excited to home a trophy. >> i was so touched. anybody in journalism, you've got to go watch this. it's so ininspiring. >> even if you're not in journalism, it's fantastic. it was inspiring to see leo take home the award but we've got to talk about sly stallone. we thought maybe this would be his year. shocked? >> what? how did that happen? he was a lock going into the race. and you know what? he didn't win 40 years ago.

his moment. he was so incredible in "creed." what a phenomenal film. so poetic to give it to sly. and then the academy award went to the incredibly deserving mark rylance. and i leapt out of my seat and i went, what? >> we were all shocked. but, who knows, maybe in another 4040 years, ght be his time. >> never know. >> wll never know. but mad max won so many. sort of a joke at the end of the night. people were joking around they were surprised the next award wasn't won by them. >> this is another one i am so psyched to see win that many awards because this is like a summer popcorn flick that audiences loved. and critics loved, too. over at rotten tomatoes that movie was 97% certifd fresh. it's so rare a film can capture both the hearts of audiences and critics. and "mad max," man, drove

al these really legitimizing awards. >> nice. it was the best written movie of all of 2015. well deserved there. but i got to ask, beyond the awards itself, were there any surprises? were there other surprises or fun parts of the night you thought, this is actually kind of funny and great? >> i thought the nightht was pretty lacking in funny speeches or surprising moments. i really enjoyed even just little equips from louis ck, but i think chris rock as the host far exceeded -- i know my personal expectations for host in what's going into it was a really tricky year. >> yeah. >> and there were such high expectations for chris rock. so the fact you think he performed, a lot of other people did, too, that's impressive. what about the whole racial component to hollywood? do you think the oscars and this whole voting process will be any different in the years to come? >> god, i hope so, because we really need some change. and that's what we saw in tonight's oscar cemonies.
