injuring one. the state law enforcement division says malcolm orr of estill is also charged with possessing a weapon during a violent crime. the two felonies carry a combined maximum sentence of 35 years in prison. officials say estill officer, quincy smith, never drew his weaponon columbia police are investigating a shooting on king street, that sent two people to the hospital. officials say they arrived on the 11-hundred block of king street friday night... to find a 41-one-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man shot. the two victims were taken to the hospital. we're told they're expected to be okay. c-p-d says it's not clear what caused the shooting. if you know something, call crimestoppers at one-triple- eight- crime s-c. and one person is behind bars this morning... after an armed robbery on two notch road. this happened at an s-mart on the 84-hundred block of two notch road friday night. richland county sheriff's

a couple spots hitting the magic number 32, the freezing., but other areas not as cold. lexington has been teeter to therring back and forth, low as 37 and where they are right now. compared to where we have been, many people heading back to work for a few days and it will feel chilly as you head out monday. wind not making it feel any better. out of the north 5 to 10 miles a hour, not a breezy condition right now but we are expecting a windy day today and later on tonight and that will make it colder outside. wind chill, this is what it feels like to your skin. 32 in columbia, 26 in newberry and 29 in saluda, a couple spots, many spots at or below freezing at least with the wind chill, not necessarily on the thermometer. to your skin this is what it feels like outside, that is what we are worried about since there

seeing snow going from chicago through indiana, west virginia, kentucky, virginia, crossing over into parts of north carolina soon but roanoke probably the furtherrest south looking for snow today. dry conditions for us, dry air coming our way. the cloud cover evacuated last night, that allows us to cool down this morning. you can see at the top of your screen some of the snow filtering in, it's chilly but not that cold, thankfully no moisture or air, that will keep us nice and dry throughout your monday forecast today. as we check out the models, you can see the snow penetrating parts of the south here but that is about all we will get for us. we are looking for -- to squeeze out and see sunshine today and that will knock out the snow showers. 50 for the high, 25 for the low tonight, so we will see some very cold air, the coldest air

>> rochelle: welcome back to good morning columbia, your time right now 6:26. republican presidential candidate marco rubio started the new year right here in the midlands. rubio spoke to a packed room at the hudson's smokehouse in lexington over the weekend. the senator from florida touched on social security, supporting veterans and the three things he says he wants to focus on if he's elected president. >> a balanced budget amendment so our debt doesn't continue to grow, term limits for federal judges, no one should have lifetime appointments.

because you are never going to get them to do it themselves. >> rochelle: attendees got the chance to meet the candidate after a question and answer forum. before lexington rubio met with supporters in hilton head. rochelle: and staying on the republican side of the race, ben carson is speaking out after last week's resignation of some of his top campaign aids. carson was asked on abc's "this week" over the weekend whether he was already planning on firing campaign manager barry bennett and his communications director. carson's geared his response towards his campaign policies and how he felt they were being handled. >> carson: well, it was -- it was very difficult to execute plans. for instance, getting our policies out. you know, we talk and talk and talk but they don't seem to get out -- and i want them out. i want people to be able to analyze them and talk about them. >> rochelle: despite the resignation, carson added that it doesn't diminish anything that bennett has done saying, "i think he's done a fantastic job."

rochelle: and back at the white house, president barack obama's new year's resolution appears to be taking another shot at gun control. he's scheduled a meeting today with attorney general loretta lynch to discuss a three-month review of what steps he can take to help reduce gun violence. the president is expected to use executive action to strengthen background checks required for gun purchases. and on thursday obama will join cnn's anderson cooper for a one-hour live town hall event on the issue entitled "guns in america." rochelle: still to come, time's running out for fema assistance. we have a recovery deadline to pass along with flood victims here in the midlands. we have that story and that information coming up next.

remote control -- >> rochelle: would be a good day to use it. >> jonathan: it will be the coldest air we've seen in quite some time. we had a warm december but the warm air left us over the weekend as we changed our calendars over to 2016. we are starting off the first full work week of 2016, off to a chilly start. technically we are warmer than yesterday morning. we saw a lot of spots at and below freezing sunday morning but not as much traffic early in the morning. we're looking at more people to be out today in this cold air. some people around 40, not too bad. wind up to 13 miles a hour in a few spots. the wind will be key in the forecast today. it will bring a lot more cold air, make it feel colder outside with the wind chill factor. wind, notice where they are, and temperatures will be kind of seeing a little extra bite due to the wind. 33 is what it feels like in

sumter, feels like below freezing in camden. feels like in the 20s near newberry, 27 the coldest apostle temperature-wise and wind chill chill-wise. you can see all the snow coming in riding the wind from the north, that will be coming our way, pulling the cold air to the south, we are seeing a lot more of the cold air, compared to the weekend, it will bee colder over the next couple days but thankfully it will be dry for us, a dry frontal passage, there is just not enough warmth for precipitation because it necessarily won't be enough -- it will be cold enough to see snow but not enough moisture in our neck of the woods to warrant any snow or ice activity. we will look for clear skies, snow stays to the north, mostly sunny skies throughout the day

it will allow us to warm up but not a lot, highs around 50, some spots stall out in the mid-50s. similar for tuesday and wednesday, back in the 50s thursday but we will start to get rain chances back here as well. we will see a warm up later in the week towards the weekend but we will also see the chance of rain return there. thankfully we are seeing dry conditions, otherwise it could be a mess for us, we are seeing a lot of cold air but a dry one. >> rochelle: those 25 degrees temperatures are definitely sobering. >> jonathan: it will feel colder than that. >> rochelle: all right, get prepared. we want to give you a quick traffic update as you head out and about this morning. >> jonathan: there are no trouble spots but we will keep our eyes out for any problems. rochelle: abc columbia wants to help you jump start your day.

>> jonathan: we have a quick rundown of your top morning headlines. >> rochelle: flood victims in need of fema disasteteassistance have until today to apply for federal aid. 24 counties in the state are covered by october's emergency declaration. today is also the deadline for returning disaster loan applications to the smallbusiness administration. as of thursday, fema had approved $78.7 million in grants to more than 30,000 applicants. to register for assistance, call 1-800-621-fema or visit disasterassistance.gov. rochelle: and we have another deadline to pass along in regards to clean-up efforts following october's historic flooding. richland county curbside debris pick-up is set to return to normal service next week. friday is the last day flood waste will be collected curbside.eb after that residents will have to dispose of flood debris to one of two drop-off centers, either the c and d landfill or lower richland drop-off center. rochelle: since october's historic flooding, we've been

feeling south carolina strong. and that's the message a new, interactive public art display in downtown columbia hopes to convey. be sure to stop by the "sc strong board" at lady and main, to write down your positive thoughts about our state, as we continue on the long road to recovery. be nice to every one, nice message there. rochelle: turning to the crime beat, the investigation continues this morning after a motorcycle crash victim was found shot. a motorist spotted the wreck early yesterday morning at long green parkway and churchland drive. richland county deputies say they discovered the crash victim had a bullet wound to the upper body. if you know anything about this case, call crimestoppers at 1-888-crime-sc. rochelle: also out of richland county, three men are facing multiple charges this morning following a stabbing over the weekend. according to authorities, they responded to the incident at the title max in the 3000 block of broad river road saturday night. they say they found the victim

upper body. witnesses spotted the suspects in that shooting fleeing the scene in a 1999 gold saturn. when officials caught up to the vehicle and apprehend the suspects they found one of them 29-year-old andrew gathers missing a pinky. emergency personnel recovered a finger at the crime scene and reattached it to gathers' hand. jail records show gathers is charged with attempted murder. 38-year-old marlon gathers is charged with assault. officials say 44-year-old jarvis hurst was also arrested. the condition of the stabbing victim is still unknown at this time. rochelle: an armed robbery out of richland county remains under investigation this morning. officials say it happened in the 1100 block of south hillock court. authorities say the suspect approached the victim as he was getting into his car holding a gun to his head and demanding his belongings. the victim handed over his i-phone 6-plus. the suspect fled, hitting a parked car on the way. after investigators arrived on

scene, they say the suspect's mother brought the phone back to them. we're told criminal charges are pending. rochelle: officials say one person is dead and a police officer is injured following a shooting in a north carolina home. police say when officials tried to serve an arrest warrant to a charlotte home several people began shooting at them. officials say police fired back and hit one person who was later pronounced dead. the police officer that was hit sustaining a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the ankle. officals say they have questioned everyone inside the home to determine who fired at the officers. rochelle: back here at home, reports of another officer-involved shooting. a 27-year-old hampton county man is charged with attempted murder after police say he opened fire on officers, injuring one. the state law enforcement division says malcolm orr of estill is also charged with possessing a weapon during a violent crime. the two felonies carry a

years in prison. officials say estill officer, quincy smith, never drew his weapon. rochelle: still to come, cooler temperatures are finally being felt here in the midlands. but it's nothing compared to the winter wonderland other parts of the nation are facing. >> jonathan: right now cooler temperatures kickoff monday. expect a breezy day this afternoon.

along with the sledding and snowball fights, portland is also having to deal with traffic delays thanks to the wintery weather. but that could mean good news for the kids as the snow could mean a little longer winter vacation. >> rochelle: you see them out there sledding. do you remember that? being excited about snow fall. now it's all putting the salt down and shoveling but then it was sledding. >> jonathan: i grew up in south carolina, anytime it snowed it was a huge or deal. i liked it because there was buzz around -- didn't have anywhere to go, i had to go to school. >> rochelle: now the kids have been out for christmas and now coming to school even in the snow. rochelle: still to come, the snow may be falling out west. but we're far more excited to see the falling gas prices at

main and gervais. >> rochelle: welcome back to good morning columbia, your time is now 6:48. rochelle: it's now harder to find out where your beef or pork came from before it hit your plate. after more than a decade of wrangling congress repealed a labeling law that requires retailers to include the animal's country of origin on packages of red meat. it's a major victory for the

lawmakers say they had no choice but to get rid of the country-of-origin labels after the world trade organization repeatedly ruled against them. rochelle: it's big money and big numbers coming out of las vegas. officials say more than 42 million people traveled to the casino corridor last year breaking 2014's record. but even with more people playing the slots in vegas, casinos still aren't making as much money as they did during their pre-recession peak in 2007. officials blame people visiting but not staying as long as before. rochelle: but if you're new year's resolution involves spending less, you're in luck. it looks like you'll be saving money at the pump well into 2016. experts say gas prices are expected to remain low this year the energy department forecasting an average of $2.37 a gallon this year. while it's an increase from the current national average which sits at less that $2 a gallon,

that would be the lowest annual average since 2009. not bad news there. rochelle: as it turns out, less doctors are recommending hpv vaccination to their preteen patients. among the most common reasons doctors say they're delaying discussion and vaccinations against the sexually transmitted cancer-causing virus is a belief that patients hadn't had sex and that parents would object. while some recommended that children age 11 or 12 get vaccinated, doctors say they were most likely to recommend vaccination and to give the shots to older kids. rochelle: the u.s. department of justice is investigating how blue bell creameries handled the ice cream contamination linked to 10 reported cases of listeriosis. three of those believed to be sickened by blue bell frozen treats died. a u.s. official confirmed the prosecutors are examining whether blue bell executives committed wrongdoing in their
