33 starting to feel a lot 33 more seasonable here in the midlands ... but for the west coast... it's a bit icier yeah... snow and ice are closing schools in oregon. the county says crews are being dispatched to sand and de-ice the roads. this action is based on calls from the public and the sheriff's response to emergencies. areas near hospitals... roundabouts and overpasses are some of the most important parts being sanded down.

little bit. the wind have been up a tad, keeping our temperatures up, if the wind die down we will see more areas cool down more than what we are looking at right now. 23 in saluda, a lot of 27s can out there. i know the wind, not everybody seeing the windy conditions, we are seeing it go in and out, seeing wind 5 to 10 miles an hour at a minimum, we will keep the wind chills in the back of our mind. bishopville feels like 18, 21 newberry. the main areas seeing even that little wind, 3 to 5 miles a hour makes a difference when it's this cold, that will make it feel upwards 5 to 10 degrees colder than what the thermometer

the low to mid-20s, a brutally cold start to your day. highs around h 44, not a lot of warmth, another cold night, expecting temperatures to dip into the 20s. >> rochelle: bundle up. thanks, jonathan. rochelle: here's a quick look at stories that are making headlines across the country. longtime charleston mayor joe riley is saying farewell. the mayor, who has served charleston longer that anyone in the city's 345-year history, is giving a short farewell address tonight. riley is completing 40 years in office. he will give a message of appreciation to residents that will be streamed live. riley is credited with leading charleston through an urban renewal that's made the city one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. riley was also the face of the city after hurricane hugo more than 25 years ago and more recently following the charleston church shooting. rochelle: bill clinton is back on the presidential

he's out on his first solo campaign events with stops planned in new hampshire, a key primary state when it comes to vote 2016. clinton's competetion on the other side of the political fence donald trump has already commented on the campaign move putting bill clinton's past scandal front and center. but the clinton campaign says they consider him a huge asset with high approval ratings and a long history in the granite state. rochelle: it would seem out west there's no rush to retake an oregon wildlife refuge from armed activists. the cautious approach by federal officials would stem from the fact that no one has been hurt in the faceoff and no one's being held hostage. about two dozen activists seized the facility to protest the conviction of two ranchers and as part of a long-running feud over public land use. rochelle: switching gears now, it finally feels like winter outside, just in time for gamecock basketball to start its sec schedule. tim hill has that and more in

most areas 10, upwards of 15 degrees, colder than what we were seeing this time yesterday. we saw a cool start, temperatures in the mid to upper 30s yesterday but much colder air starting out today, so a lot of areas will be seeing those freezing temperatures for quite some time this morning. it will take a little while for us to get back above freezing. wind out of the north 5 to 10 miles a hour and that will make it feel significantly colder. 30 the air temperature for us, wind chill 25 downtown, 17 is what it feels like in saluda, 19 in sumter, 19 in bishopville, a very cold set up as you wake up and head out this tuesday morning. bundle up, you will need all the bundling you can get today with the jacket, gloves, scarves, whatever you can find, it will be quite cold and there's no relief from the cold coming soon. we are looking at sunshine in the forecast but not expecting any warm air.

you head out and about this morning. >> jonathan: good news no incidents to report around the city but we will keep you updated if anything pops up. >> rochelle: abc columbia want to help you jump start your day. >> rochelle: we have a quick rundown of your top morning headlines. >> rochelle: the national action network is set to speak today at a press conference this morning to address the release of ex-north charleston police officer michael slager. slager is charged with murder in the shooting death of an unarmed black motorist. a sheriff's spokesperson confirmed that slager posted bond and has been released from custody. he will remain under house arrest until his trial later this year. a judge ordered that jury selection in the case will begin on halloween. slager is shown on cell phone video firing eight times as walter scott ran from a traffic stop last april. scott's family says they are disappointed with the judge's decision. rochelle: back here at home, gun violence has richland county

in a weekend shooting. authorities say a motorist key spotted a motorcycle wreck early sunday morning at long green parkway at churchland drive. deputies say the crash victim adrian silva had been shot in the upper body. richland county coroner gary watts says silva died from those gunshot wounds. if you know anything that can help call crimestoppers at 1-888-crime-sc. rochelle: and hospital officials alerted authorities to a shooting after a man was brought in with a gunshot wound. richland county deputies say two groups were firing shots at each other yesterday afternoon in the 2400 block of pelican drive. one man suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body. he was driven to palmetto health richland hospital by an acquaintance. again, anyone with information in this case is again asked to call crimestoppers. rochelle: president barack obama is making moves to tackle what he's calling an "epidemic of gun violence" in america. president obama will announce his executive actions to combat gun violence later today.

during a meeting with attorney general loretta lynch yesterday. the actions would expand mandatory background checks for some private sales. and would provide more funding for mental health treatment, fbi staff and atf agents but opponents of the initiative on gun-control measures are vowing to challenge the president's authority. republican congressman joe wilson calls the president's plan a diversion saying that instead the government needs to reform mental health service and focus on securing the nation's borders in order to reduce gun violence. >> what the president is proposing is of no consequences, it's a diversion from the tragedy that we have of peoplele not receiving proper mental health services and it's a diversion from the global war on terrorism. >> rochelle: wilson cites incidents like the san bernardino attacks as cause to secure the nation's borders. even before the president's official announcement,

the campaign trail have blasted the actions, and some gun rights advocates are already threatening to challenge them in court. rochelle: today's council meeting in west columbia could determine the fate of a fofo-acre lot that's sat empty for decas. a columbia developer first came forward last spring with the "brookland" development.mp they say they want to fill the lot with shops, restaurants and apartments. longtime residents say they're excited about the development but are concerned over the number of apartments being allowed. >> the public is starving for something to happen thereafter all these years, but what they are proposing will not be in the public's best interest. >> rochelle: residents are questioning the traffic, surrounding streets and size of the buildings that come with the development. but despite resident's concerns, west columbia mayor bill horton says the project will bring tax and business license revenues in

but if delivery's more you're style, you're in luck. there appears to be a pizza war. pizza hut and papa john's began the new year with new low-priced offers. pizza hut is offering customers the chance to buy a medium pizza with one topping for $5 as long as they buy at least one other item also for $5. and papa john's is offering customers who buy a large pizza at regular price the chance to buy a second for only 50 cents. rochelle: and from food to fuel, it looks like you can even save some money at the pump. aaa says gas prices will stay relatively low this year. it estimates an average price between $2.25 and $2.45 a gallon. but less demand in january could push prices even lower maybe even another 10 cents in coming weeks. but the auto club does say a bit of a price increase is likely

maintenance. boo hoo. rochelle: it's bad news for new york's chick-fil-a. after getting 59 health department violation points they were set to reopen today but chick-fil-a's atlanta-based company is opting to keep it closed until they say they're confident they're beyond standards in all areas. the violations included flies and potential food contamination. rochelle: according to a new study led by the university of washington, the plan to make school lunches healthier is working. the study looked at over 7,000 middle and high schoolers in washington state before and after new meal standards went into effect in 2012. the rules cap calories per meal and require at least one serving of fruits or vegetables. researchers found that students are now getting more vitamins and minerals in their meals and that school meal participation did not change. rochelle: america's favorite humanitarian vote is in a "star wars" sequel already on people's

2015. with more, here's jason nathanson. >> reporter: friends, fans, and family are mourning the death of country singer craig strickland. his body was found monday, more than a week after he disappeared while duck hunting in oklahoma. a winter storm had capsized his boat. the backroad anthem front man's wife, former miss arkansas helen strickland, wrote on instagram that the night of the accident craig had fought his way out of the water and up a hill before dying of hypothermia. she says he was found lying in the shape of a cross, and now he's in heaven with his father. his buddy chase morland also died in the accident. his dog sam was found alive. >> reporter: ellen degeneres is everyone's favorite humanitarian -- at least according to the people's choice awards. it was just announced the talk show host will get the favorite humanitarian award at wednesday night's show. the honor also comes with 20-grand for charity. degeneres says that'll go to st. jude children's research hospital. she joked that the award sums her up perfectly, as she is both human and an itarian. reporter: what's the most anticipated movie of 2016? the next "star wars" movie, of course. that according to online ticket
