most areas 10, upwards of 15 degrees, colder than what we were seeing this time yesterday. we saw a cool start, temperatures in the mid to upper 30s yesterday but much colder air starting out today, so a lot of areas will be seeing those freezing temperatures for quite some time this morning. it will take a little while for us to get back above freezing. wind out of the north 5 to 10 miles a hour and that will make it feel significantly colder. 30 the air temperature for us, wind chill 25 downtown, 17 is what it feels like in saluda, 19 in sumter, 19 in bishopville, a very cold set up as you wake up and head out this tuesday morning. bundle up, you will need all the bundling you can get today with the jacket, gloves, scarves, whatever you can find, it will be quite cold and there's no relief from the cold coming soon. we are looking at sunshine in the forecast but not expecting any warm air.

north, snow for areas in north carolina yesterday, even toward the beach, that tells you how cold the air is, pretty much everybody across the carolinas and southeast, we are looking at a chilly set up, sunny and i think we will see a lot of blue skies so from the inside looking out it will look like a nice day but it will be quite cold throughoutut your tuesday. 44 for yourigh, it will feel colder than that. 25 for the low tonight, will feel colder than that. 45 tomorrow. we will stay in the 40s the next couple days. look for highs to get in the 50s thursday and highs in the 60s and chance of rain tour the weekend. >> rochelle: we really need to brace ourselves, we are in the brunt of it now. >> jonathan: yes. >> rochelle: we will slowly climb. >> jonathan: we will see our lows around 8:00 or so, it takes a little while for the air to kind of warm up, so it will probably be below freezing for a good portion of the morning. >> rochelle: bundle the kid up

you head out and about this morning. >> jonathan: good news no incidents to report around the city but we will keep you updated if anything pops up. >> rochelle: abc columbia want to help you jump start your day. >> rochelle: we have a quick rundown of your top morning headlines. >> rochelle: the national action network is set to speak today at a press conference this morning to address the release of ex-north charleston police officer michael slager. slager is charged with murder in the shooting death of an unarmed black motorist. a sheriff's spokesperson confirmed that slager posted bond and has been released from custody. he will remain under house arrest until his trial later this year. a judge ordered that jury selection in the case will begin on halloween. slager is shown on cell phone video firing eight times as walter scott ran from a traffic stop last april. scott's family says they are disappointed with the judge's decision. rochelle: back here at home, gun violence has richland county

in a weekend shooting. authorities say a motorist key spotted a motorcycle wreck early sunday morning at long green parkway at churchland drive. deputies say the crash victim adrian silva had been shot in the upper body. richland county coroner gary watts says silva died from those gunshot wounds. if you know anything that can help call crimestoppers at 1-888-crime-sc. rochelle: and hospital officials alerted authorities to a shooting after a man was brought in with a gunshot wound. richland county deputies say two groups were firing shots at each other yesterday afternoon in the 2400 block of pelican drive. one man suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body. he was driven to palmetto health richland hospital by an acquaintance. again, anyone with information in this case is again asked to call crimestoppers. rochelle: president barack obama is making moves to tackle what he's calling an "epidemic of gun violence" in america. president obama will announce his executive actions to combat gun violence later today.

during a meeting with attorney general loretta lynch yesterday. the actions would expand mandatory background checks for some private sales. and would provide more funding for mental health treatment, fbi staff and atf agents but opponents of the initiative on gun-control measures are vowing to challenge the president's authority. republican congressman joe wilson calls the president's plan a diversion saying that instead the government needs to reform mental health service and focus on securing the nation's borders in order to reduce gun violence. >> what the president is proposing is of no consequences, it's a diversion from the tragedy that we have of peoplele not receiving proper mental health services and it's a diversion from the global war on terrorism. >> rochelle: wilson cites incidents like the san bernardino attacks as cause to secure the nation's borders. even before the president's official announcement,

the campaign trail have blasted the actions, and some gun rights advocates are already threatening to challenge them in court. rochelle: today's council meeting in west columbia could determine the fate of a fofo-acre lot that's sat empty for decas. a columbia developer first came forward last spring with the "brookland" development.mp they say they want to fill the lot with shops, restaurants and apartments. longtime residents say they're excited about the development but are concerned over the number of apartments being allowed. >> the public is starving for something to happen thereafter all these years, but what they are proposing will not be in the public's best interest. >> rochelle: residents are questioning the traffic, surrounding streets and size of the buildings that come with the development. but despite resident's concerns, west columbia mayor bill horton says the project will bring tax and business license revenues in

maintenance. boo hoo. rochelle: it's bad news for new york's chick-fil-a. after getting 59 health department violation points they were set to reopen today but chick-fil-a's atlanta-based company is opting to keep it closed until they say they're confident they're beyond standards in all areas. the violations included flies and potential food contamination. rochelle: according to a new study led by the university of washington, the plan to make school lunches healthier is working. the study looked at over 7,000 middle and high schoolers in washington state before and after new meal standards went into effect in 2012. the rules cap calories per meal and require at least one serving of fruits or vegetables. researchers found that students are now getting more vitamins and minerals in their meals and that school meal participation did not change. rochelle: america's favorite humanitarian vote is in a "star wars" sequel already on people's
