involve domestic violence. 33 governor haley plans to include roughly 19 million dollars in her executive budget to fight domestic violence. the money will be put towards decreasing case load and adding prosecutors. in addition, the governor is ordering state agencies to provide risk assessment screenings and is asking them to develop human resource policies for domestic violence. governor nikki haley is also taking the time to pay her respect to a longtime south carolina lawmaker. senator billy o'dell died yesterday morning at his home in greenwood county of apparent complications related to a heart condition. he was 77. o'dell represented greenwood, anderson, and abbeville counties for more than 25 years. governor haley issued the following

saying: "for more than 25 years, senator billy o'dell worked tirelessly for the people of his district and the state, and we are forever grateful for his service. michael and i ask that you lift up senator o'dell's wife, gail, and his family, friends and constituents during this difficult time. he made south carolina a better place." south carolina's top court is getting its first new leader in more than a decade. costa pleicones is the new chief justice of the state's supreme court. he has been an associate justice on the high court since 2000. pleicones turns 72 next month meaning that he'll only be able to fill the position for one year. but he says that's not going to prevent him from continuing the work

about his push for about his speaking out barack obama president president barack obama speaking out about his push for stronger gun control measures.... during last night's town hall "guns in america." white house officials say the goal of the televised event was in part, to debunk claims by some republicans that the intent of the proposal is to take guns away from law-abiding citizens.... and to garner public support for the president's recent executive action. but a new poll suggests... most americans already support the president's proposal. the c-n-n/o-r-c poll shows 67-percent of those surveyed say they favor the changes to gun control measures. the executive action is designed to expand background checks to cover more gun purchases made online and at gun shows... as well as make it easier for the f-b-i to complete such checks efficiently. but not all the polling news is good.

executive actions will be effective in reducing gun- related deaths in the u-s. back here at home... orangeburg police will have some extra eyes on them. "the orangeburg times and democrat" reports the city council there has approved the purchase of 80-body cameras for their public safety department. chief mike adams says the cameras will go a long way toward restoring the public's faith in law enforcement. the cameras come with a price tag of more than 100-thousand dollars. to the low country now... where a judge has denied former north charleston police officer michael slager's request for the state funds to help pay for expert witnesses. slager is charged in the shooting death of walter scott. the judge says slager is not entitled to public funding... since he doesn't have a court-appointed attorney. slager has been out of jail since monday. his trial is set for october 31st. lexington police are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident. it happened in the 500-block of

killed ellie jerome mcleod junior of lexington. police are asking anyone with information on the case to call crimestoppers... that number... one-triple-eight- crime-sc. and the search continues this morning for a pair of suspected thieves in richland county. richland county deputies say the duo walked out of a home on crestview avenue they had allegedly just finished robbing... only to find their getaway car blocked in by the family who lived there. investigators say the suspects jumped in their car and rammed the family's car three times.. before firing a gun at them. no one was hurt.. but the two managed to get away. and we now know the name of the shaw air force base airmman killed in a motorcycle accident. officials say air force staff sergeant dallas pauls died outside the base's sumter gate on u-s highway 76. he joined the air force in 2006 and arrived at shaw in 20-15. his original hometown was not identified. still to come... mother nature...

friday morning, we made it to the end of the week. >> jonathan: and i'm we're live from main and gervais. the time right now is 6:30 and thank goodness it's friday. those waking up and getting ready to go to work, we are not done just yet. started. >> jonathan: thank goodness it's friday, we are getting the week employed in the cross hairs. let's look at the forecast as we head out this morning. a little rain coming our way. right now the rain coming ever closer and we have been watching it all week, tracking the rain showers as they cross the savannah river into georgia from south carolina, but the rain not a huge impact as of now. at least not for us in the direct columbia area, rain moving in from the south and west and that will continue to be the case over the next couple hours. i think from 7:00 to 8:00 where it's widespread up to 10:00 or 11:00 is when we are expecting

during the cloud cover we saw a high of 2 62 yesterday. our normal high this time of year is in the mid-50s, normal low in the low 30s. starting off in the 40s is a nice change from the frigid temperatures from earlier. we are on the plus side of average in the last 24 hours and wind are starting to get a little more variable out there. we were seeing a constant flow out of the northeast 5 to 10 miles a hour. now we are seeing interaction with some of the wind with rain fall coming as well. that storm activity will stir things up a little bit. the rain is not moving all that fast, but it's going to move relatively quickly. notice the shape of the system, the narrow band is kind of like a hour glass shape if utility it on the side. most of the rain to the upstate,

by the thin band of rain that goes through the augusta area and us as well. i notice by lunchtime we are drying out, nice and dry this afternoon, if you have friday evening plans, don't worry about the rain at all. rain tomorrow will take until lunchtime to get here. chance of scattered showers or two in the late morning but based on the latest radar trends i really think it will take a while for it to get lear, it's still over the central plains and we might get leading edge stuff going but for the most part saturday evening will be an evening event. as we get tour the end of the weekend highs around 60 for us for both today -- excuse me, both saturday and sunday but much different forecast, rainy saturday but sunny sunday and we'll carry the sunshine through next week. >> rochelle: the good thing, the rain we are getting toward the end of the morning commute

jeb bush will be speaking at a town hall in pendleton today. and marco rubio will be holding a meet and greet today in columbia. that's going to be at 4:30 at carolina haven right off bluff road. the two gop presidential hopefuls will extend their stay into the weekend when they're joined by their competition at the "kemp forum on expanding opportunity." bush and rubio along with ben carson, chris christie, carly fiorina and john kasich will all take part in the forum tomorrow. its aim is for forum participants to present and discuss their ideas for fighting poverty and expanding opportunity in america. governor nikki haley will be in attendance. the forum will be moderated by speaker paul ryan and senator tim scott. that's at the columbia metropolitan convention center and it all starts at 9:00 in the morning. pres. obama: if we could combine gun safety with sensible background checks and some other checks, we're not going to eliminate gun violence but we will lessen it. >> rochelle: president barack obama speaking out about his

measures during last night's town hall "guns in america." white house officials say the goal of the televised event was, in part, to debunk claims by some republicans that the intent of the proposal is to take guns away from law-abiding citizens and to garner public support for the president's recent executive action. but a new poll suggests most americans already support the president's proposal. the cnn/orc poll shows 67% of those surveyed say they favor the changes to gun control measures. the executive action is designed to expand background checks to cover more gun purchases made online and at gun shows as well as make it easier for the fbi to complete such checks efficiently. but not all the polling news is good. 57% of those surveyed say they don't believe the executive actions will be effective in reducing gun-related deaths in the u.s. rochelle: back here at home orangeburg police will have some extra eyes on them. "the orangeburg times and

council there has approved the purchase of 80 body cameras for their public safety department. chief mike adams says the cameras will go a long way toward restoring the public's faith in law enforcement. the cameras come with a price tag of more than $100,000. rochelle: to the low country now where a judge has denied former north charleston police officer michael slager's request the state funds to help pay for expert witnesses. slager is charged in the shooting death of walter scott. the judge says slager is not entitled to public funding since he doesn't have a court-appointed attorney. slager has been out of jail since monday. his trial l set for october 31st. rochelle: lexington police are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident. it happened in the 500 block of gibson road. the collision killed ellie jerome mcleod, jr. of lexington. police are asking anyone with information on the case to call crimestoppers, that number 1-888-crime-sc. rochelle: and the search

pair of suspected thieves in richland county. richland county deputies say the duo walked out of a home on crestview avenue t ty had allegedly just finished robbing only to find their getaway car blocked in by the family who lived there. investigators say the suspects jumped in their car and rammed the family's car three times before firing a gun at them. no one was hurt but the two suspects managed to get away. >> rochelle: and we now know the name of the shaw air force base airmman killed in a motorcycle accident. officials say air force staff sergeant dallas pauls died outside the base's sumter gate on u.s. highway 76. he joined the air force in 2006 and arrived at shaw in 2015. his original hometown was not identified. rochelle: still to come, storms and snow. we're taking a closer look at a winter wonderland brought in by el nino. >> jonathan: and right now very mild start, temperatures in the mid-40s.
