fire at the suspect... possibly striking him... before fleeing the scene. the sheriff department says a man did show up at the hospital with a gunshot wound... but no other details are available at this time. the south carolina law enforcement division is investigating its first officer-involved shooting of the year. a sled spokesperson says it happened early saturday morning in santee. orangeburg county sheriff's deputies responded to an incident at a nightclub, and someone shot at a deputy. the deputy, who was not hurt, returned fire. berry says it's not known if the deputy hit anyone, because the car the person was in, drove away. he says there is no dash-cam video of the incident. sled took over the investigation, per o-c-s-d's request. last year, there were 48 officer involved shootings here in south carolina. and we now know the name of the man killed friday night, when he was hit by two cars on garners ferry

gervais. crysty: good morning, columbia. thank you for waking up with us on this monday morning. i'm crysty vaughan. >> rochelle: and i'm rochelle dean. we're live from main and gervais. your time right now is 6:31. >> crysty: we know many of you have the day off for mlk day. if you have plans we warn you you have to bundle up and there have to be several levels. >> rochelle: scarves, gloves, a lot of people may not have to go to work or school but they may be around for celebrations. for more of what to expect, let's turn things over to meteorologist jonathan kennedy. >> jonathan: yes, we are seeing the same temperatures a a we saw last week but we won't warm up as much as we did last week. even with sunshine highs are expected to top out in the 40s.

below freezing for most locations around town. right at freezing in newberry at 32. 28 in camden, that's our coldest spot as of right now. we'll warm up throughout the day but as i mention it will be a slow, gradual warm up. temperatures well below normal throughout the day. we are starting out pretty seasonable for january standards, below normal by this afternoon by 10 degrees. wind out of the west and southwest, 5 to 10 miles at the moment and that will allow us to see even cooler air, it will feel colder for much of the area as we move throughout the morning. wind chills in the low to mid-teens, a very chilly start regardless where you are starting out. we will see a lot of sunshine, high pressure to our west and northwest. that will bring northerly winds and that is bringing more of the lake effect snow for much of the great lakes.

ozarks, arkansas, memphis, but also snow a little closer to home for the smoky mountains in north carolina into tennessee. for us in the midlands nothing to worry about, not a cloud in the sky. obviously with no cloud cover we won't see any precipitation and we will stay with a dry forecast. temperatures a little below average only in the mid to upper 40s, it's will be colder tonight than it is right now. we will see lows around 20 degrees, much, much colder air, high of 42, even with the sunshine and as we move later in the week temperatures bounce back closer to normal but we bring back the chance of rain thursday into friday. >> rochelle: what is normal in january? >> jonathan: 56. >> rochelle: at this point you don't know, you started out 60s and 70s. then we dropped down to the high 20s, now 30s and 40s and now back to 20s. >> jonathan: it's a roller coaster but leveling things out

will be on the lower end for sure. >> rochelle: get ready for it. >> crysty: thank you, jonathan. >> rochelle: yes. crysty: we want to give you a quick traffic update as you head out and about this morning. >> rochelle: here are some trouble spots that you might encounter. the south carolina highway patrol is reporting a collision on i-77. we do not yet have details concerning any injuries as of right now. >> crysty: this incident will be at mile marker 22 in the northbound lane and we will continue to keep our eyes on the road and update you if anything else pops up for your morning commute. rochelle: abc columbia wants to help you jump start your day. >> crysty: we have a quick rundown of your top morning headlines. we start with vote 2016. the democratic presidential hopefuls are coming off their last debate before voting begins in iowa in two weeks. hillary clinton, bernie sanders, and martin o'malley tangled in the debate last night in charleston hosted by nbc. hot-topic issues such as gun control, the economy and health care dominated the debate.

voter support. it was just over a week ago clinton received the endorsement of the chairman of the congressional black caucus and is beating sanders more than two to one among minority voters. but sanders isn't concerned, saying his congressional record and stance on criminal justice will put him on the path to victory. >> sanders: as secretary clinton well knows, when this campaign began, she was 50 points ahead of me. we were all of 3 percentage points. guess what? in iowa, new hampshire, the race is very, very close. >> crysty: and while sanders hinted at an upset in iowa and new hampshire, a new poll shows nationally, hillary clinton still holds a crushing lead over her competition. >> rochelle: clinton has a 59% support from democratic primary voters nationwide. the nbc-wall street journal poll finds that's compared to 34% for sanders. but sanders would do better than

match-up against donald trump. based on a separate poll by the same organizations, sanders would beat trump by 15 points, compared to clinton's 10 point advantage. and on this martin luther king day, the democratic presidential hopefuls are heading here to columbia next. hillary clinton, bernie sanders, and martin o'malley will all participate in king day at the dome. the event includes a march along washington street and a rally at the state house all in honor of martin luther king. that rally is set to start at 10:15. >> crysty: and if you're looking to attend today's event honoring martin luther king, the city's parking garages will be open to the public for free. those garages are the lady street, washington street, sumter street, taylor street, and cannon street garages. lincoln garage, park street garage and arsenal hill garage will also be open for no charge for the event. in addition, street meters will not be enforced today. but pay close attention to those

meters down town that say no parking. crysty: and while the democratic hopefuls make their way to the capital city, some republican presidential candidates are also taking time to reach out to voters in south carolina. >> rochelle: donald trump and senator ted cruz were in myrtle beach the this weekend attending the south carolina tea party coalition convention. ben carson, mike huckabee, carly fiorina and rick santorum also took part in the event. the convention puts the candidates face to face with conservative grassroots leaders and voters. presidential candidate mike huckabee left the campaign trail yesterday, instead taking up post behind the pulpit at trinity baptist church in cayce. >> rochelle: you heard it right there. the republican is a former southern baptist pastor. he's also an accomplished bass player. huckabee played with the tbc cayce choir and praise band. the former governor of arkansas

thanks for waking up with us on this monday morning, your time 6:49. those of you on a health kick for your new year's resolutions have something to look forward to. chick-fil-a is officially releasing their "superfood" menu item today for something tasty and healthy. it's a new salad with the combination of kale, and broccolini all tossed in a maple vinaigrette with dried cherries and an assortment of nuts sprinkled on top. sound delicious. this is replacing their coleslaw side item. rochelle: and another popular fast food chain is adding a food item to the menu that looks "finger-lickin' good." kfc is whipping up some chicken with a little more kick. it's "nashville hot chicken" and this item also comes out today. it pays homage to a popular local specialty in nashville. kfc will offer the spicy chicken at all of its more than 4,000 u.s. stores. rochelle: now let's turn things over to crysty for a check of what's making things hot in hollywood.
