house hopefuls have purchased two-point-five-million dollars worth of t-v ad time. the ads come less than two weeks before iowans are set to gather for the first official balloting of the 20-16 presidential election. expect to see those same adds here in south carolina, next week. south carolina's first in the south primary is february 20th. all three democratic presidential candidates are coming off a busy day campaigning in south carolina. hillary clinton, bernie sanders and martin o'malley all attended yesterday's "king day at the dome." to honor the legacy of doctor martin luther king... democratic hopefuls vow to continue his work.... including when it comes to strengthening education.

supports a debt free college plan.... while senator bernie sanders promotes a tuition-free plan for public colleges and universities. hillary clinton also took time to address education... and its ties to a day dedicated to doctor king's legacy. it's a 33 message echoed by civil rights leaders present at yesterday's event. activists say they have shifted their sights on education inequity here in south carolina. n-double-a-c-p members say a minimally adequate education system is not enough... and that every student deserves the same high level instruction and learning environment. a goal that , activists say, isn't possible,

participation. 33 just last week governor nikki haley rolled out a new initiative for education reform, but it'll be legislators who have the final say on what's passed into law. lawmakers we've spoken with expect education to be a top priority during this legislative session. new this morning... officals with the columbia fire department are investigating the cause behind an early morning house fire. it happened in the one-hundred block of olde springs road. this is a developing story... but we'll be sure to bring you more details as they become available. and after days of searching... four life rafts believed to be aboard two military helicopters that collided off hawaii have been retrieved. according to the u-s coast guard... some of the rafts were inflated... but it's not clear how that happened. rescuers have expanded their search for 12 marines... including 22-year old sergeant jeffrey sempler of woodruff, south carolina... missing since their two

into each other thursday over the waters of oahu. it's a community coming together in spartanburg county... as the search for the missing marines continues. friends and family of sergeant sempler gathered for a vigil. family members remember him as an excellent student and dedicated marine. so far... the coast guard says there are no signs of survivors from the crash... but, the search continues. the coast guard is asking people along the hawaiian island of oahu to alert the marines if they find debris connected to the collision. 33 still to come... it's a war of words between the g-o-p presidential front-runners. we'll have the latest on vote 20-16.clear skies and bitter cold air this morning.expect a

making headlines later today. here's eric with your "look ahead." columbia residents have the opportunity to speak out about preventative measures relating to future flooding... "the community input and recovery project" is holding a series of six meetings to gather feedback from residents. public input from the meetings is being used to compile a technical report that is specific to the county and will include strategies for lessening the effects of future flooding. residents are encouraged to bring photographs and other information to document flooding in their communities.... following octobers historic flood. the first meeting is tonight at andrews park... starting at five thirty and runs until military job seekers and family members are invited to attend a "military career and resource fair" today... local employers and employment representatives will be on hand... as well as resources for v-a benefits, behavioral health, homeless veterans, health wellness and more. this is taking place at orangeburg armory. it starts at

leaders from both sides of the aisle are hoping to help you out... when it comes time to head to the polls. leaders from both the republican and democratic party will be speaking at "road to the white house: a conversation on the 20-16 race." they'll be speaking on the state of the 20-16 race as we head into the first february contest... and discuss what's in store for voters here in south carolina. our own ben hoover will moderate the event. that's next thursday, january 21st... at the capital city club. and there's been a shake up when it comes to the republican presidential hopefuls sharing their message with the nation... before march first's "super tuesday" vote. the republican national committee announced it has cut ties with n-b-c news and instead will partner with c-n-n for february's super tuesday debate. the decision comes after the r-n-c suspended its partnership with n-b-c news following the october 28th c-n-b-c debate in boulder, colorado.

need for change. 33 something noticeably absent from yesterday's rally... the confederate flag. civil rights leaders at the event say its removal now paves the way for work on other concerns. shifting gears... sumter police have made contact with a missing mother of two. shardae davis was last seen on friday... at her home in the ritz mobile home park. officers were called out to the home for a disturbance... and found two small children, alone and unharmed. investigators say they have spoken with davis by phone and she is okay... but says she is reluctant to come forward because of an outstanding warrant. authorities say the driver of a car speeding away from a lexington county deputy died after crashing into a tree in pelion. deputies were investigating armed robberies at two truck stops when they saw the car that matched the description of the vehicle they were looking for. investigators say the passenger who matched the description of the robber from the two truck stops survived the crash. a construction

33 these huge waves are catching the eyes of some california surfers looking to "hang ten"... yeah... the national weather service forecasted 14 to 16-foot surf with 18-foot sets ... off california's central coast, yesterday. those waves are set to slowly subside either by today or tomorrow. officials say that beach-goers should be aware of dangerous rip currents and powerful waves.

from main and gervais. and lucky for us... thanks to the price drop for crude oil... those gas prices are also taking a dive at the pump... according to gas buddy dot com...gas prices in the midlands have dropped four cents in the past week. this brings the average to a dollar sixty seven a gallon. and those gas prices are dropping nationwide... and even causing "price wars" between two gas stations in michigan. gas prices dropped to 53-cents per gallon at a b-and-b market, so the competing station dropped prices to 49-cents per gallon. more than five- hundred people lined up to take advantage of the price drop at both stations. there were so many cars... police were called in to

is finally speaking out following a pageant scandal. eric, what can you tell us? steve harvey is opening up about his miss universe mix- up... and coming face-to-face with the two women at the center of the controversy. harvey mistakenly crowned the wrong winner during last month's miss universe pageant. harvey sat down with the winner of miss universe for the first time since the pageant. and his interview with runner-up... ... miss colombia... is set to air today. you can catch part two of "miss universe: the truth"... today at three... right here on a-b-c columbia. model, stephanie seymour, is being charged with driving under the influence... a police report says seymour backed her s-u-v into another car at a stop sign. the report says the responding officer noted seymour was unsteady on her feet, and that she had alcohol on her breath. seymour refused all tests and was arrested, according to the report. the 47-year-old model was released on a 5- hundred dollar bond. she's scheduled to appear in

next month. and sad news to pass along this morning... glenn frey... co-founder and guitarist for the rock supergroup... "the eagles" has died... a publicist for the band confirmed frey died yesterday in new york city. his death is due to complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia. fellow eagle... don henley... said in a statement, quote, "he was like a brother to me... the bond we forged 45 years ago was never broken." glenn frey was 67 years old. there's more coming up on good morning columbia... including a look at your day in history... stay with us. we're live from main and

teen numbers, you get the quarterback numbers on the temperature gauge it will be very warm on the thermometer this morning. wind are light but we are still seeing a wind chill with wind around 3 to 5 miles a hour, that does make a difference when it's that cold. that will make for a very cold start for a lot of locations this morning. 16 in camden, 18 columbia. 14 in newberry. 17 in st. matthews. the thermometer is below freezing. once it gets below freezing it doesn't matter at that point. we see implications with any water, it will be frozen. we are seeing a dry set up, a few icy puddles but the roadways look dry because we haven't seen rain in the last couple days. good news there. we don't have to worry about widespread ice. it will be very cold when you head out. looking for clear skies, no cloud cover to speak of in the

carolina or georgia. we're looking on the other side of the mountains for cloud cover, that will be the case today but also the next couple days. expecting lots of sunshine for us but it will be very cold. even with the sun this morning into this afternoon we will only warm up to 40. it will be a very chilly forecast. notice the cooler air toward nashville, we have a substantial snow system that will come and bring decent snow fall. this won't bring snow for us, if we see any implications from that system, that system will modulate and eventually bring us rain chances later in the week. no rain chances today, it will be cold, sunny, we will see lots of blue skies, highs in the upper 30s for areas in the north, 40s for us at home. a much, much colder day today even than what we saw yesterday or have seen in the previous couple weeks. it's been a while since we've seen temperatures this cold in the morning and also that cold in the afternoon as well.

headlines across the country. the abduction of three americans in baghdad is raising security fears. iraqi security forces have been searching the baghdad neighborhood where three americans were reportedly kidnapped over the weekend. troops closed streets and conducted house-to-house searches. investigators say three men were kidnapped from an apartment known to be a brothel and are working to determine whether they were lured there. rochelle: the mayor of flint, michigan, says she's heading to washington to discuss her city's water crisis. mayor karen weaver says she hopes to secure a disaster declaration because flint's water supply was contaminated with lead when the water supply was switched from the detroit system to the flint river in 2014. tests later showed elevated blood lead levels in children. residents are using bottled water. rochelle: and texas authorities are expected to hold a hearing today requesting to transfer "affluena teen" ethan couch's court proceedings from

"the community input and recovery project" is holding a series of six meetings to gather feedback from residents. public input from the meetings are being used to compile a technical report that is specific to the county and will include strategies for lessening the effects of future flooding. residents are encouraged to bring photographs and other information to document flooding in their communities following october's historic flood. the first meeting is tonight at andrews park starting at 5:30 and runs until 7:30. eric: and military job seekers and family members are invited to attend a "military career and resource fair" today. local employers and employment representatives will be on hand as well as resources for va benefits, behavioral health, homeless veterans, health wellness and more. this is taking place at orangeburg armory. it starts at 10:00 this morning and runs until 2:00. eric: and time is running out for those affordable care act applications, the columbia richland library is here to help

>> eric: right now we're going to talk about the weather, if you walk out you will wake up early. >> rochelle: a brisk walk to the car. things are below freezing. if you thought it was bad yesterday, today is worse. let's turn things over to jonathan kennedy. >> jonathan: good morning. it was cold yesterday, we have been seeing a lot of cold mornings, it is january, we typically see numbers around freezing but we are well below that and looking for more cold air for the next day or two. 24-hour temperature change, this is compared to what we were seeing yesterday. 10 to 15 degrees colder than yesterday, a chilly start to your day, down right bitter cold. 20 degrees the air temperature in downtown, camden 19. 19 newberry. 17 saluda. st. matthews also 17. it will be very, very cold. the wind not that breezy which

light wind and that is making it feel much colder than what that thermometer is reading. we are seeing temperatures in the mid to upper teens. wind light and variable out of the west and northwest and that will be the case today. the wind chill downtown, the air temperature is 20 but feels like 12, the light wind around 5 miles a hour. newberry feels like 14. camden is 16 on the thermometer, they are seeing calm wind as well. satellite nice and quiet in the carolinas. we have clouds on the other side of the mountntns and we are looking at a sunny set up. a lot of dry air which is why we are cooling off, that dry air cools off much easier than warmer and moist air. we are looking for a chilly superintendent. nothing to worry about in the way of rain fall or any frozen precipitation but we are watching and tracking the system out of the central plains as it
