roads. hi motosts to reporan dangerou they m ti while on the road. just dial star-4-7. of course this wintery weather comes with some cold temperatures. it can be tempting to step outside a bit earlier to warm up your car.... while you finish your morning routine. but local law enforcement is advising against that idea. officials say it could open the door for thieves who want to steal your car. deputies say since last friday... eight cars have been stolen in richland county. they say if you must leave your car idling... have a remote start installed. that will require a key be in the ignition before it can be put into drive.... making it harder for thieves to steal. from the roadways to the airways... many travel plans are coming to a screeching halt. more than four- thousand flights for today and tomorrow have already been scrapped.... because of this

and gervais. jonathan 33 will be tracking the winter all morning. r now, we're going to taka e neadn the mids ave update the 12-missing marines off the coast of hawaii. the marine corps has now changed their status to "deceased" after failing to find any sign of the missing marines... despite days of searching. among the marines... 22-year old sergeant jeffrey sempler of woodruff, south carolina. the marines have been missing since last thursday... when their two military helicopters crashed into each other thursday over the waters of oahu. back here at home... the winter weather isn't the only thing causing a traffic nightmare in eastover. residents there are still dealing with the repercussions of the one thousand year flood. earlier this week...

visit our website... a-b-c columbia dot com. here in the midlands... so far... it's still business as usual. officials with the south carolina highway patrol are warning residents to avoid any unnecessary travel. but should you have to hit those roadways... the south carolina department of transportation is working to make sure you stay safe. crews have already pre-treated many roads across the state.... with salt and calcium chloride... to prevent and melt ice. the d-o-t says they've been preparing for winter weather conditions for months. the d-o-t 33 will have scouts out checking road conditions throughout the weekend. in addition the south carolina emergency management division activated at four this morning... and is monitoring the condition of the storm. we have crews there now... working to bring you any updates on storm preparation. on a day

to be closer to that so see sleet and way too warm for snow. in winnsboro, camden, we are not getting a temperature readout so that's not helping us out too much but we are starting to see the pink much down. as you see that's the freezing rain and just barely the northern parts of lee county and kershaw county. we are seeing a skew to the east in parts of darlington county as well and northern counties in the p. d.. we are watching that cooler air coming in from the north, especially in the lower level, that will under cut the rain. more rain on the way but we will probably see a little dry spot in the system as well. that low will be kicking up a lot of things, notice the heavy rain along the atlantic corridor and that will be moving to the east and northeast. all snow for north carolina at the moment shifting to a

won't be bearing the brunt of the storm. but as jonathan said, we'll be seeing rain here in the capital city, possibly even some snow by the weekend. yeah, we're talking about the "s" word. our jennifer ready is in winnsboro in fairfield county where they're expecting some freezing rain and has an update on the conditions there. >> good morning, eric and rochelle. we are continuing to see the rain in fairfield county. it cues seem to be picking up and we are seeing the wind continue to get stronger as the timings on. again, we are expected to get the freezing rain here in fairfield county later this afternoon or early as this morning according to meteorologist jonathan kennedy. sc-d.o.t. officials have been out here working on 12-hour shift. they will continue to do so until tomorrow afternoon. officials are urging you if you

in the next 24 hours, don't. be mindful of the road conditions, if you see a wet spot, it might not just be a puddle of water, it could be black ice. monitor your speed, watch out for any slippery spots, don't brake suddenly if you don't have to and don't follow a car too closely. we will continue to keep you updated on the conditions in fairfield in the next half hour. jennifer ready, back to you guys. >> rochelle: thanks, jennifer. get back here safely. you can see the trucks working behind her, she will be out there this morning and giving us updates as the show continues and as you head out for what is sure to be a messy day. rochelle: also out of fairfield county, all schools and officers in the fairfield county school district are closed due to the potential of freezing rain. and out of kershaw county there will be a two hour delay for north central area schools today. that includes baron debalk,

elementary and north central middle and high school. all other kershaw county schools and offices will be open on a normal schedule. eric: here in the midlands so far it's still business asusual. officials with the south carolina highway patrol are warning residents to avoid any unnecessary travel. but should you have to hit those road ways the south carolina department of transportation is working to make sure you stay safe. crews have already pretreated many roads across the state with salt and calcium chloride to prevent and melt ice. the d.o.t. says they've been preparing for winter weather conditions for months. >> pay attention to the updates, if there are any safety precautions, please heed those warnings, take action when we ask you to do so. >> eric: they also suggest you are prepared with a winter weather kit.

for us it looks like a cold in charlotte. we are seeing good snow fall rate in those areas, but for us nothing frozen on the roadways but it will be slick. we are seeing light fog and some steady rain. >> eric: you have been tracking this all morning long. while we're dodging a blizzard here, other parts of the country aren't as lucky. >> jonathan: that's right. other parts of the nation could see up to two feet of snow. especially if you are on the other side of the corridor and d.c. is expected to be pounded. we may be seeing freezing rain that will be an evolving issue through the day but we have boots on the ground, we will check in with jennifer ready for our latest conditions to our north. >> we are continuing to see the rain in fairfield county but again we are not seeing any of the freezing rain yet. show you a little of what we are
