keep you updated for your morning commute. a-b-c columbia wants to help you jump start your day. we have a quick rundown of your top morning headlines. the very first ballots in the new hampshire primary have been cast. a dozen voters came out in the small community of dixville notch... to cast their votes at midnight. bernie sanders won all four democratic votes... and ohio governor john kasich won the most republican votes. the race is heating up in new hampshire... with voters heading to the polls today for the first-in-the nation primary. a new c-n-n poll finds bernie sanders and donald trump holding substantial leads. sanders holds 54-percent of the vote... compared to democratic rival hillary clinton's 40- percent. and trump tops the g-o-p field with 31- percent of the vote... well ahead of marco rubio's 15-percent. south carolina voters will be next in line to cast their ballots. just a reminder... the g-o-p primary will take place february 20th. the democratic primary will take place the week after...

the vote... franklin graham... son of evangelist billy graham... is encouraging south carolina voters to take action going into vote 20-16. as a part of a 50-state tour... franklin graham will be right here in south carolina today. he'll be holding his "decision america tour." the prayer rally is set to take place right across the street from us... at the state house. the event starts at noon.... on the north side of the state house. graham says he's asking south carolinians to "pray to vote" and engage in the community by living and sharing their faith... at home, in the community and at the ballot box. and a popular actresses will be in the midlands throughout the week urging students to get out and vote. angela bassett will headline a "get out the vote rally" at s-c state university today between two and three in the martin luther king junior auditorium. bassett is endorsing hillary clinton for president. she will also make stops at claflin university and the state house... later this week.

fox will also be headlining "get out the vote rallies" at voorhees college and denmark technical college today. the south carolina state university board of trustees is set to meet today. that's set for nine this morning. and later tonight... the university will hold a dinner for administration members. they say they want to express their "appreciation for the university's efforts and dedication... in preparing for the recent hearing before the south carolina house ways and means higher education sub- committee." officials say no public foundation funds will be used to pay for the event. you'll recall the university has struggled to get out of the red... and has been working to get out of millions of dollars worth of debt. the meeting comes a day after hundreds at south carolina state university came together to honor and remember the lives lost during the orangeburg massacre. on february eighth, 19-68... 200-activists on the campus came together to protest a bowling alley's refusal to desegregate. and during that protest... nine-

into the crowd... fatally wounding three protestors and injuring 27-others. as members of the community come together to remember the injustice... they say they hope the commemoration ceremony will re-ignite the passion in the fight for civil rights. during the 33 ceremony... civil rights activists also called for a thorough investigation into the incident and the state troopers who were cleared by a federal jury. benedict college is celebrating black history month with a series of events. and today they'll be reflecting on a historic moment for our state. following the removal of the confederate flag off state house grounds last summer... benedict college will be holding a discussion... entitled "and the flag came down: what's next?" south carolina representative todd rutherford will explain what's next for the state... and how

fight 33 against breast cancer just got a lot stronger. the city of columbia has donated eight thousand dollars to the palmetto health foundation's bosom buddies fund. bosom buddies is the foundation's breast cancer patient support group. if you or someone you know is living with breast cancer and need someone to talk to... the bosom buddies group meets the second tuesday of each month, at six-thirty

health baptist. after years on the decline, new south carolina moms experienced an increase in preventable birth defects last year. reportshow 33-moms statewide gave birth to babies with birth defects that could have been prevents. health professionals with the south carolina birth defects prevention program say they're taking this rise very seriously. 33 officials say expecting moms should make sure they're eating healthy and take a multivitamin every day. health professionals suggest... taking folic acid before getting pregnancy and early pregnancy could lower the risk of having a baby with birth defects. for more on this... be sure to head to the online version of this story at a-b-c-columbia-dot-com. still to come... the very first ballots in the new hampshire primary are cast... who's taking the lead for the granite state... next.

at claflin university and the state house... later this week. meanwhile actress vivica fox will also be headlining "get out the vote rallies" at voorhees college and denmark technical college today. to the lowcountry now... where attorneys for michael slager say... they want access to d-n-a swabs collected by state police... on the taser slager used during his fatal interaction with walter scott. the defense team got access to the taser in january under a consent order, but now seeks access to the swabs that were used to collect evidence from it. the motion seeks to have an independent analysis of the evidence collected by sled. sled officials say both scott and slagers d-n-a are present on the taster. but the defense contends new tests may show scott got control of the taser before the shooting. the testing must be complete by friday. back here at home... police say they're looking for a burglary suspect... who broke into a mattress store. this is surveillance footage taken from 'mattress man' on sunset

on february third... police say the man you see broke into the store and stole a laptop. if you can help investigators... call crimestoppers... one-triple- eight-crime-sc. richland county sheriff's department says... they're looking for a man accused of not paying child support. officials say vincent boatwright owes an excess of 71-thousand dollars. sheriff leon lott says anyone who fails to pay child support should turn themselves in to the richland county sheriff's warrant division... located off huger street. anyone with information on boatwright's location is asked to call crimestoppers. a pair of d-u-i arrests have kershaw deputies breathing a sigh of relief. the sheriff's office says deputies narrowly avoided head on collisions...on two separate occasions. deputies say thomas mccray came close to hitting a deputy head- on on u-s 521 in rembert. they add cecile townsend nearly hit a deputy while driving the wrong way on highway 6-0-1 in lugoff. both mccray and

driving under the influence. the chapin police department is under new management. town native seth zeigler is the new top cop. ziegler spent almost two decades climbing the ranks with the west columbia police department. a top priority for the new chief is building a strong relationship between the department and the residents of chapin. ziegler 33 replaces former chapin police chief troy crump. crump retired from the position last month following a three day suspension. crump says he was planning on retiring before the suspension was issued. still to come... we're finally feeling the power of old man winter. but we're finding out mother nature is really

"the new york times" reported last month he was contemplating a third-party run. the media mogul says he's listening to what the current candidates are saying and what voters are currently doing but

bloomberg admits that he would need to start getting his name on ballots by early march to stage a serious campaign. rochelle: attorney general loretta lynch plans to visit six cities in the coming months to highlight police departments she sees as "role models" for law enforcement." the initiative is part of a national discussion on police use of force and effective law enforcement tactics. the topic has taken a new urgency amid a series of high profile police shootings of unarmed men in places such as ferguson, missouri, and here in south carolina in north charleston. rochelle: it's mardi gras. and the zika virus doesn't seem to be dampening the mood at carnival celebration in brazil. more than a million people partied in the streets in rio and other brazilian cities. and hotel bookings are actually up from last year. still, authorities are urging people to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. if at all possible.
