we're going to actually start with the drama involving u.s. sailors held by iranian forces in the persian gulf. >> and we're anxiously waiting@ for an update on this one. the ten u.s. servicemen were on a training mission in two small boats when one of the vessels became disabled. iran's revolutionary guard navy took them into custody for what the country's official news agency called snooping. officials say they were to be released at daylight iranian time, but at this hour the sailors and their boats are still in iranian hands. abc's chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz with more. >> reporter: the two small navy vessels with the sailors on board were transiting between wait and bahrain when an official says one of the boats experienced a mechanical problem, with both then possibly drifting into iranian territorial waters near farsi island. according to u.s. officials, the

that the sailors will be allowed to continue their journey. secretary of state john kerry personally reaching out to his iranian counterpart to find a diplomatic resolution to the situation. incidents with iran have exacerbated tensions in the already tense persian gulf region. last month as the aircraft carrier "harry s. truman" was entering the gulf, iranian navy boats conducted live fire exercises just 1,500 yards away. over the summer u.s. officials claim iranians targeted u.s. ships and helicopters with laser devices. and in 2007 the iranians held british sailors for 13 days despite early promises to release them, claiming they had entered their territorial martha raddatz, abc news, washington. >> and we'll stay on top of that story. also new this morning,

tourists. the turkish prime minister is pledging to fight isis until it's no longer a threat to his country or the world. the pledge comes after an isis suicide bomber kilild ten people in the historic district of istanbul. most of the dead were german tourists. it's believed that 28-year-old bomber recently entered turkey from syria. and there are also some new developments in the crisis with north korea. the south has just fired shots at a north korean drone that crossed the border. in the meantime, the south wants china to punish the north for its so-called h-bomb nuclear test, specifically enforcement of international sanctions. there e doubts, though, about that test and also about north korea'claim of a successful missile launch from a submarine. analysts say the video was probably faked. president obama made his own history, delivering his eighth and final state of the union address. >> and rather than introducing new legislative proposals, he focused instead on his broader visions for the future. in his words, it can only happen if we fix our politics. abc's bazi kanani is up late

south carolina governor nikki haley also included a swipe at donald trump. >> it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices. we m mt resist that temptation. >> reporter: it was among the points of agreement. the president also referencing the heated rhetoric in the campaign for his successor. >> we need to reject any politics, any politics that targets people because of race or religion. this is not a matter of political correctness. >> and bazi is joining us now live from capitol hill. and baz, we want to ask. there were 20 guests in the first lady's box. and who were some of those vips that were there? >> reporter: well, obviously those guests there were intended to send a political message. they included a syrian refugee, an undocumented immigrant who later went on to serve in the u.s. military, and the plaintiff in the u.s. supreme court case that legalized gay marriage. the president also left one of his seats empty. that was a symbolic gesture meant in remembrance of the victims of gun violence.

who is the county clerk from kentucky who refused to issue those same-sex marriage licenses, was actually there as well. what did she think? >> reporter: well, reena, it was a surprising reaction from kim davis. she obviously wanted to make a statement with her appearance there but perhaps not with her words. a reporter asked her on her way out what she thought of the speech and she said simply, "it was good." >> wow. >> that was all. >> she looks really entertained there when you see that image. >> i'm surprised that she said that. that's pretty interesting. >> well, yeah. she didn't elaborate, though. bazi kanani on capitol hill. thank you, bazi. stay with abc news as we get more reaction following last night's address, and we'll take you live to d.c. that's later on "america this morning." winter storms are creating whiteout conditions near the great lakes, in indiana just west of cincinnati. two big pile-ups on interstate 74 within a half mile of each other closed the highway for

more than three dozen vehicles were involved in this one. eyewitnesses say the highway looked like a junk yard. yeah, it did. about ten people were injured, but all are expected to recover. and there were also many, many fender-benders and cars off e road to the north. in michigan. this is interstate 96, which looks like a country lane. drivers were warned to slow down, but obviously not all of them got that message. keeping police and tow trucks quite busy. the storm is heading to the northeast. accuweather's paul williams tracking it. paul, good morning. >> thanks, kendis, reena. well, it's about how cold it's going to feel throughout the northeast because this is where old man winter is concentrating all of his fury as far as potential additional snow but specifically how it's going to feel. below zero throughout the upstate new york area. now, as we change gears down to the southeast we're looking for more rain to begin to gel throughout the southeast with storms kicking in by thursday and this same system will move up the east coast and bring some rain toward the east giving some thunderstorms along the way. kendis, reena? >> looks very rainy down there.
