the person who attack him. >> laurie: officer raul perez is now recovering a home whilee learn more about what led to this assault. local10's terrell forney live with the latest now. >> terrell: you can bet that officer perez has seen some pretty wild things during his 15 years as a street cop here in miami but no doubt that that training certainly helped him here inside of this casino as he subdued a man who eventually stabbed him in thehe face. >> he pretty much lashed out at the officer. >> terrell: witnesses describe a belligerent man who refused repeated requests to leave. >> he hutt the officer. the officer tried to tackle him down to the floor to detain him, arrest him. >> terrell: things grew more violent pie the second inside of magic city casino just before 1:00 a.m. this morning. officer raul perezez was at the facility working an off-duty detail and was called over t escort the man outside, and that's when had a knife was pulled%out.

casino management issued its ownwn statement today saying that this was ab isolated incident, but they are rooting for the speedy recovery of this officer with who, by the way, is recovering back at home. meanwhile we know that at last check that suspect was in critical condition at jackson memorial hospital. we're live in miami. i'm terrell forney, local10 news. >> laurie: terrell, thank you. a false alarm at biscayne elementary school today after police received reports of an unattended backpack on campus. the bomb squad came in, went to the miami beach campus and discovered the backpack had nothing harmful inside. students were evacuated outside the school temporarily as a precauon, and once that check was committee, students were sent back inside and classes were dismissed at the regular time. police say a van hit a building earlier today. officers say there was minor damage to the build at north xie highway near johnson street. the driver suffered minor injuries. >> calvin: the search has been called off for a swimmer who

we're in the thick of it how with that afternoon rush, so let's get to traffic reporter jenise fernandez. >> jenise: we've got twoaccidents on i-95 southbound in broward county. the first at cypress creek road. you can see where the cars starting to hit their brakes. this is kong a pretty significant backup ps we zoom on in to our maps again this is i-95 southbound a cypress creekek road with speeds at 17 miles per hour. and staying on i-95 southbound, this time at oakland park boulevard another crash there with speeds clocking in at 30 miles per hour. cruising onto dade county, there was an earlier accident on i-95 northbound. this was actually in the express lanes at northwest 103rd street. good news is that crash has cleared up, but we are still seeing delays with speeds at 33 meows. and another accident on the palmetto expressway, this is as you're heading north right around northwest 74th street with speeds there clocking in at 18 miles per hour. laurie. >> laurie: jenise, thank you.

>> calvin: a family in northern california is simply devastated today after a fire at their home. thatatire killed their pet dogs, and firefighters say the blaze probably was started by, yes, a hoverboard. >> i is like selling kids bombs. >> calvin: from the moment it began there was no ordinary house fire. mark keiler knew it when he saw the windows of this home explode and began taking this video with his camera phone. >> i mean, completely engulfed within minutes. >> calvin: the cause fairly certain now. the santa rosa fire department trace dollars its point of orin to a little girl's room in the front of the house where he said been charging a hoverboard that appears to have caught fire. >> the hoverboard itself was plugged in in the bedroom near a book smell of the book shelf had some karats on it that showed that the fire had started down near the ground revel. >> calvin: this is the 40th reported hoverboard fire in 19 states, according to the consumer product safety commission, which is looking hard at lithium ion bat ritz

we can see some of those mid to high level clouds streaming in ahead of the low pressure system that's going to make for the big snow flatten mid-atlantic starting tomorrow. for now, though, it is bringing the threat for severe weather through portions of lower mississippi river valley, a totoado watch in effect, and there are some active tornado walkers along this area off stormy weather, so things getting a little rough there. as the system closes in on us tomorrow, it brings a better chance for rainfall. as for the threat for thunderstorms, the storm prediction center has a northwest part of the state in the slight risk category. we're in the marginal category, so that m%ans we won't rule out a few storms, and some of those may be on the stronger side. we're simply going to have to wait and see how you the all plays outs. what we can tell you is that we will have a good chance for rain in the area, rain and brisk breeze ahead of the front. we'll be watching any storms thatevelop. those move through later tomorrow afternoon into the eveninin the front sweeps through friday night. behind it we get into a west

a car riddled with bullets. >> victor: local10's layerin livingston joins us life with more. >> reporter: we're hearing this shooting happeneddized recording studio. the victim may have been here to utilize the facility, and one man else tells us he ran inside to take cover when the bullets started flying inside of this building. >> i heard bullets, and the first thing you want to do is get down. >> reporter: he asked us not to show his face but tolds he's with 87 entertainment was here early this horning along with several other people when gunshots started popping off on northeast third court. >> a red challenger or something like that, and they just started shooting. the bullets was coming through. you see all the dust coming out of the walls and stuff like that. it was crazy. >> reporter: he described hearing close to a dozen shots. miami-dade police aren't saying much. all we know is one person was found dead in that buick lesabre. one of four people police say were inside the car when the shooting happened. >> we were scared to come outside because we didn't want

as for the police, well, we know that they were there but she was not arrested because the uber driver did not press any charges. for now report can live at jackson memorial, hatzel vela, local10 news. >> victor: three people were hospitalized after a crash involving a dump truck in coral springs. the car collided with the truck at the intersection of wiles and godfrey roads. the dump truck ended p on its side with its load of dirt spilled all over the road. much victim is said to have suffered moderate injuries. to other two have been treated for moderate injuries, and it's unclear how this crash happened, and a man was shot during a cold chain robbery in miami-dade. veg you a said he was robbed hate home on northwest 127th street near 23rd avenue, he was approached by the two men but well refused to give his wallet and that's when he was shot. surveillance video caught these two suspects who took vega's chain and ran off. once again it happened in early december.
