the from scene. michael. >> michael: talk about frightening moments. that powerful tornado touching down around 9:30 this morning, and there is debris all over the place. take a look at this, this mangle metal. it's actually a bleacher. no one where it's from but you can see it is now wrapped around this tree and t tt is just the beginning of a chaotic day. the winds reached 100-mile-an-hour miles per hour. >> we heard a huge bangnd someone screaming and we couldn't see out the windows and we were told to take shelter in a closet and get under table. >> michael: an ef-1 tornado touching down wednesday morning on broward cololge's north campus, right here in coconut creek. >> someone came in from outside is said, oh, my goodness, there's a windstorm that just came through the parking lot. there's scars stacked on top of one another. >> michael: costs of students took shelter inside the library. some used their righteous to capture debris scattered across

ment-filled parking post, spearing a gaping hole in the side of the trailer. meanwhile, trees in the area could not withstand the winds. >> i saw the thick, thick 12-inch round one, the one that's laying right there on the de, i seen that thing snap like it was nothing, like it was a toothpick. >> todd: lurkly it was only brought damage and no one was hurt. >> i was in the front of the building and my ears started to pop. looked outed the window and i could see tree limbs flying by. got my team members away from the windows. >> i'm sll shaken. i had no idea which way to go, if i was heading into the storm or away from the storm. i felt like if i stayed put that i was better off staying put. >> todd: as you can see at that ups facility a cherry picker work can to trim some of the broken branches from a large tree there. they also lost a large portion of their security fence, ended up wrapped around a vehicle, quite a bit of damage here, but the headline, of course, nobody

in pompano beach, todd tonn, local10 news. >> calvin: less head lyon natural. >> laurie: and the national weather service confirming it was indeed an ef-1 tornado that touched down. >> calvin: chief certified meteorologist betty davis is all over thiss for us. >> betty: you're root, laurie. it wasb ef-1. this is a scale for, the national weather service goes out and sur vass the damage. so on a scale ef-1 ranges from wend of 80 miles an hour to 110 miles per hour packing quite a punch as it rolled across the coconut creek area. in case you misinformed action this is what the doppler radar looked like at 9:00 this morning as that rotating storm crossed p so won't tobacco coconut creek and the western edge of -- earlier today the national weather service crews were out surveying the damage getting a good look at exactly what happened, what that damage path looked like. they have so far determined that the winds probably were as high

i think i did pablo santos say earlier that it was a situation where the tornado prorobly touched down and lifted back up and touched down again. they will send out that final report hopefully within the next several hours. we will know a lot more about the path of the storm and the storm's duration as well. in the meantime i want to take you outside through the lens of our miami tower camera. plenty of cloud coverer out there, although miami has been the one spot that has not had a lot of stormy weather today. in fact, it's been warm and mainly quiet. i'm keeping an eye on the doppler radar because at this point all the action is still in broward county. fort lauderdale now involved in more raiai no strong storms over but we have had so much rain there broward today, we have to be on guard for flooding and the potential for storms out there not over. it's going to be a problem for us into thursday, and i'll talk more about that in a few minutes. laurie. >> laurie: betty, thana you. and caught on camera that dramatic crash on the streets of miami lateast night. we told you about several vehicles involved, including a miami-dade police officer's

janine is the in t t newsroom now with the latest on this. >> janine: a driver causing a six-car crash after a legendly driving under the influence and now we are seeing video of it from a nearby red light camera. take a look at the bottom of your screen. on the left right there you she a car clip with the car on its right, careening up, flipping on its side. that triggered a multi-car crash which included a miami-dade cruiser. you can see with all those lights it was definitely a busy night on the road and very dangerous. that collision happened at of the with 8th street and 32nd avenue. david marinee was charged with driving under the influence. he claimed that the brakes on his car had malfunctioned. off-duty mild police officer suffered minor injuries. but if you can believe it, nobody else was hurt. police say those injuries were to the officers a hand and wrist and nothing else. calvin. >> calvin:anine, thanks a lot. right now it's time for us to get a check on the afternoon rush with traffic reporter

what are the trouble spots today, jenise in? >> jenise: calvin, a better situation than this morning but there are still accidents out there. let's start with i-95 northbound roofing. dolphin expressway. i can see the broken-down car from the camera view. it looks like that car was involv in that accident. the big picture is that there are delays. as we zoom on in closer again i- northbound proofing the dolphin expressway with speeds 11 miles per hour. and we've g g an accident on the mcarthur cause iowa heading into miaia beach. that accident right around fountain street seeing heavy delays there with speeds a 14 miles per hour. and a crash on dolphin expressway, this is as you're heading west around northwest 37th avenue with speeds here clocking in at 17 miles per hour. as we cruise o on to broward county, we have a broken down car that was causing s@me problems. this is right around flamingo road. this is as you are heading eas there is a right lane blocked. so we are seeing delays right around flamingo road with speeds at 40 miles per hour.

winds flowing in from the south-west around 11 miles an hour. a warm day, for emple near 80 in some of your neighborhoods in miami-dade. but spotty storms between now and 7:00. by 9:00 tonight there could be wet areas, too, espececlly in broward county and the keys, and you can see exactly what time talking about on the drawer, noting on the west side of the peninsula between fort myers and naples they're getting slammed with rain right up and broward county cannot seem to get out of the rainfall as soon as we push a little through, a few more showers moving in, and these showers are quite heavy. the good news a this point is that there are no severe hoping to warnings to pass along to you but we've already had several inches of rainfall in this area, thus around weston, davie, sunrise we are under a flood stories, so as rain continues to come in over areas that have season so much, we could run into some issues with ponding on the roadways at least. so let's's talk rainfall rates and show you what's going on. rainfall rates almt an inch an

out between fort lauderdrde, sunrise, pembroke pines as well. in general, the showers are tracking toward the east-northeast, so that's going to be the direction in which they are moving. right now miami-dade, t most we're seeing just a few light showers more north of tamiami trail, maybe a few sprinkles around hialeah, even a little shower neae downtown but nothing terribly heavy or strong and severe. m going to keep watch on this little line segment of showers movivi up the keys. as that advances toward the northeast, we may get some of this moving into south miami-dade county or touchchg mainland monroe. i'll put this into motion and you'll see how it is moving. islamorada in line for some rainfall and maybe a gust of wind as those showers pull through as well. so the wet weather, the stormy weather is not over. through the evening we'll be watching. in the morning stormy weather possible. and then tomorrow afternoon rain and storms. the one thing weave to watch out for with anytorms, the

it kept oh skipping, though, touchihg down again and again, the storm flipping cars, ruining roofs. officials surveyed all the damage late today. >> it was a very discreet. it found down, lift, what we call a veryiscreet path. >> andrew: the national weather service said it wasn't huge but this ef-1 was powerful flipping attractor trailer, sending debris. coconut creek, broward college one the hardest areas hit but pompano beach also feeling the effects. the officials say this isn't over. >> we do have a threat of storms thugh tomorrow. we are in a wet period, you know, potential for heavy rainfall ask and more tomorrows for tomorrow. we're going to be in the the clear by the end of the w wk. >> andrew: and take a look at this. you're looking live the broward college campus. you can see all these tries have blown one way. they're all laying over one way over here. officials say they are still measuring to see exactly how far this tornado went.

traffic reporter jenise fernandez. >> jenise: you said it. let's start with i-95 northbound an accident at griffin road, but look at that. the train really starting to come down so we are seeing heavy delays. as we zoom on in closer i-95 northbound that accident around griffin road with speeds here clocking in at 21 miles per hour. staying on i-95but heading south, herbal which boulevard, an accident there as well, heavy -- commercial boulevard speeds 11-mile-per-hour. sawgrass expressway an accident right around university. this accident is blocking two right lanes so we are seein some really heavy delays with speeds at 16 miles per hour. and a disabled tractor-trailer on 595 eastbound, this is at flamingo road. there is a right lane blocked and speeds here are clocking in at 17 miles per hour. as we cruise on down to dade county we do have a few accidents that we're still watching, i-95 northbound approaching the dolphin expressway with speeds here at

areas south of miami, kendall, we'll be watching your skies later tonight, even in the heart miami. meantime, though, fort lauderdale really is stealing the show, so to speak wants w have the rainfall lined up from us-1 to 95, watching those skies just open up. we're getting dumped on around pompano beach, deemed, it is not severe weather but it's a lot of rainfall. deerfield beach and we've already had rain in these areas. so the one concern we willl have is that potential for maybe some flooding. maybe some water ponding on some of the roads. so rainfalalrates we're finding right now not quite half an inch an hour b b definitely enough to cause some problems. if this doeoe't move away soon. it is moving toward the east-northeast but it mply being followed up by more. our atmosphere is very unstable as we're finding a frontal system, a cold frfnt getting a little closer to south florida tonight and certainly into torrow. that's when we'll finally force the front through.
