took cruz on and even accused him of being able to do -- willing to do or say anything to get elected. so that was a pretty tough hit. >> now i secretly think jim gilmore is a dark horse in this race that's going to come back and get there. >> he was in the undercard debatete >> finally twitter went crazy. did any of the other candidates take advantage of the trumpless debate. >> i think marco rubiodid. he was table to talk longer about foreign policy. the moderators showed some previous statements on immigration about ted cruz also. and, of course, immigration is a critical issue in iowa. >> sure is. speaking of io, does trump's boycott of this debate impact his iowa campaign? is therereny signs of this? >> i think we're only going to know monday night. if he wins, we cann a maybe it was a brilliant strategy. what donald trump is trying to do is trying to freeze the field. now, of course that isn't how

but if he's successful monday night, it may look like a good move. if not, people will say why did he decideo skip it. >> it was interesting to see him not there on stage. as for the democrats, sanders is hoping for a large turnout, as well, correct. >> yes. as is donald trump, they need the first-time caucusgoers to turn out. if you're seeing a large or larger crowd ononday evening, it may be a good sign for both bernie sanders and donald trump. >> that's so interesting. we've been talking so much about iowa.about right around the hampshire. what's really the key in new hampshire? what do we need to look out for here? >> new hampshire is a critical state. i thinkhat after the new hampshire primary we're going to see a winnowing of the field. it's a very different electorate than iowa. you're going to see the more establishment, usually the person that leads there. but we're seeing donald trump, as well. >> fascinating times though in the campaign cycle i think.

>> the primary season about to kick into high gear. thank you very much. abc deputy political director shu shanna lsh. >> after all this time, we're down to three days bore the final votes get under way. let's move onnow, thank you. to the latest on the zika virus. the head of the world health organization sounding the alarm saying it's spreading explosively. and a emergency w.h.o. committee will meet monday to decide in the outbreak should be declared an indernational health emergency. here in the u.s., at least 31 cases in 11 states and late last night, the first cases in boston. all contracted before coming back to the u.s. this map showing the parts of the country authorities say are most vulnerable. the secretary of defense taking steps to make the military more family friendly. ash carter saying that he will uble the length of fully paid maternity leave to 12 weeks.

to work with congress to expand time off for new fathers and for those who are adopting. he's directing the military services to expand the hours that mililary child care facilities are open. the detroit teachers union is suing the school district for what it callm deplorable conditions. the union's demanding immediate funding to fix crumbling buildings, accusing the district of neglect. student and teacher safety. the system has also been plagued by rolling teacher sickouts forcing dozens of schools to close on any given day. classes are canceled today at a texas middle school because of a suspected carbon monoxide leak from a faulty boiler. at least 145 people were made sick from the leak yesterday. they were treated atthe hospital and then released. and a mystete solved this morning after the new york area was rattled by what felt like an earthquake. did you feel this. >> i didn't feel it. the shaking was felt from southern new jersey to connecticut and even some people

>> reporter: so it's a little early to call it just yet. i'm david wright in new york. >> a fascinating debate. we want to get a little bit more on this right now. abc's brandi hitt was at the actual debate and joins us now from des moines in the early morning hours. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, r rna and kendis. >> what's the reaction there? was there a clear winner from last night, do you think? >> reporter: you know what, a lot of people are talking and a lot of analysts agree that marco rubio had a great night. you had rand paul who got loud cheers from the crowd because he had the most supporters probably there in the room. there's donald trump who wasn't even there but still possibly a big winner becauseot only was he the first issue discussed, his name came up so many times, he had his own rally and during the stretch of the debate, he was also one of the top candidates trending on google all night long. >> and brandi, you're going to be there straighgh through the clean-up effort, as well, that's

but through the long haul. but do you get a sense that tonight's move hurt or helped trump? >> reporter: that's the big question. yes, we all come in like a big swathe of people and get the heck out of here very quickly, right? when it comes to hurting or helping, trump supporters say he did the right thing by holding this rally. his opponents sathis was a huge mistake. we don't know the till early poll numbers come out or possibly obviously when the caucuces happen on monday. he needs to convince all of those people who are supporting him to show up. this isn't like a normal election. you have to show up at a very specific time. where i'm from in california, you can go to the poll in n e morning or in the evening or during your lunch break. here in iowa, you show up in the evening rain or shine. if he doesn't't get those people to go out and turn out for him, he's not goingn to win iowa, reena and kendis. >> fascinating. we hear there could be snow. we look forward to her reports. >> hopefully she helps those folks cleaning up behind there, as well. turning now to the other top

remaining militia members at the oregon wildlife refuge say they'll leave if no one is arrested. the group's leader ammon bundy has urged everyone to go home. the fbi meanwhile released this video which shows group member lavoy finicum being shot by state police. they say he was killed after twice reaching for a loaded weapon. >> the world health organization meets monday to decide whether to declare a global health emergency over the zika virus outbreak which the head of the w.h.o. says is spreading explosively. brazilian officials have linked e moss quit tote born illness to babies born with small or deformed heads. our dr. david besser is in brazil and filed this report. >> reporter: fabiola takes me to her home in rio. she's a physical therapist, five months pregnant with her third child. uh-huh. to keep away the mosquitos? and now spending her hard-earned income on insect repellants. applying every two hours.

baby. zika may be linked to microcephaly. thousands of babies here in brazil have been born with the tiny heads that indicate severe brain damage. up to 1.5 million cases of zika so far here in brazil. it's spreading in 23 areasas across the americas. the world health organization expects 3 to 4 million cases overall, saying, the level of alarm is extremely high. in the u.s., at least 31 lab confirmed cases in 11 states. all people who traveled to affected areas and returned. and state health departments will be required to report all new cases to the cdc. there'e'no vaccine yet. no treatment. the brazilian governnt spraying for mosquitos. the only a aion people can take is to avoid getting bitten. our team here keeps applying repellant. as does fabiola. >> and for people who have traveled to zika affected areas, when you return home, if you have any symptoms whatsoever,
