1:08 am
that didn't happen for him tonight. the road to super tuesday success for hillary clinton was through the south. she won big among african-american voters. george, i was down in those states talking to voters, so many voters i met hado idea what bernie sanders stood for. his victory, his road to victory is looking narrower and narrower tonight. >> hillary clinton hoping to put it altogether and all away in the state of florida. matt gutman is there tonight with the clinton mpaign. >> reporter: a very confident and very energized hillary clinton here tonight, george, and also very energized crowd. the mere mention of donald trump seemed to be the thing that got them going, originally when we heard all the projections coming in, the donald trump projection of the state came in, they booed. when hillary clinton was mentioned they cheered loudly. of course, everything seems to be looking beyondd this particularly primary and toward

place on march 14th. a banner on the wall said vote early. >> matt gutmanhanksery much. more on what the voters were thinking. david muir is at the decision desk right now and republican and democratic voters right now, battling different things. >> take a look at this, a split between republicans and democrats on this question, when asked should the next president come from outside the political establishment. look at that, 50% of republican voters say they want an outsider. only 15% of democratic voters wanted an outside. when we break it down, 63% w wt to donald trump who wanted an outside outsider as president. but when asked experience as a president. 39% of republicans said yes.

status which led to those victories for trump and clinton today. >> david muir, thanks very much. donna, let's start with the democratsp right there and hillary clinton. democratic voters wanted a candidate that kashdcarried on barack obama's policy and no question that hillary clinton tonight was able to capture voters throughout the south where black voters make up more than a quarter of the population. she now has momentum going into states that reflect that broad diversity, so this is an advantage for hillary clinton. as you know, ernie sanders will also reach some delegates tonight as well. >> that's right, he's won four states. meanwhile, bill, on the republican side, those outsider candidates a year long, democrats like their leader, republicans are not happy with their leaders in washington. donald trump, t@d cruz doing well. >> yep, i mean, democrats are happy with theirdemocratic
1:11 am
republicans are unhappy with the democratic president and decided over the last few years to be very unhappy about republican leaders as well. it was a good tuesday for donald trump. he's the leader in the race, no question, he'll have attend of the day, about 250 delegates ted cruz and marco rubio, between them, will have won about 320 delegates. hillary clinton is pretty comfortably ahead. this race, there are two possible paths, trump winning or trump not winnnng and ending up with a brokered or contested convention. everything depends on two weeks from tonight. if he wins florida and ohio, it's probably over. if he loses bot of them, we're probably going to a contested convention. if he wins one and loses one, hard to tell.

last 4 hours in this never trump, stop trump movement in both of those states. >> up to this point, the arguments against donald trump have all failed, the arguments that he's not conservative tonight, he doesn't have the temperament enough to be president he's not actually looking out for the little guy who represents donald trump's voting base within the republican party. it remains to be seen if it's too little too late. >> cokie, you had the two republican leaders in the house and senate. paul ryan o of the speaker of the house and mitch mcconnell, clearly distancing themselves from donald trump. >> it was remarkle. both said they wouldn't involved in this presidential campaign. the remarks about the ku klux klanened the hesitancy of donald trump to move away from their endorsement, really got to tho republican leaders. but, you know, george, this is
1:13 am
if those republican leaders wanted to do in donald trump they should have done this many months ago. >> jon karl, you have a candidate here, donald trump, who's attacked john mccain, the candidate in 2008, loser because he was attacked. all of the republican leaders, yet, republicans couldn't come one a coordinated campaign against him. >> yeah, just now starting this effort. it's astounding. when we look back at this campaign, one of the big questions, he may be destroying the republican party as we know it. in another way, he's united the republican party. his two biggest victories tonight were in alabama and massachusetts, winning in the south, winning in new england, winning along different income levels, different education levels. he united republican voters as he absolutely divided republican leaders. >> with all kinds of voters. okay, we got a lot more to get to.

east in wha has been a very big night for donald trump and hillary clinton. let's look at the wins right now, seven states for donald trump. he's won in vermont, alabama, georgia, tennessee, virginia and massachusetts and arkansas. ted cruz winning texas and oklahoma. marco rubio winning in minnesota. on the democratic side, hillary clinton has won seven states -- alabama, arkansas, georgia, tennessee, texas, virginia and massachusetts. bernie sanders winning four states, home state of vermont, oklahoma, colorado and minnesota. as i said, ted cruz has won two states, texas and oklahoma tonight. byron pitts is there with the cruz campaign in texas. >> reporter: george, ted cruz took the podium earlier this evening flanked by his wife, two young children, family and friends and h h made the case that after tonight, he's the republican party's best alternative to donald ump. at one point during his remarks
1:20 am
the other candidates to prafrlly to consider him. the crowd's mood this evening was less celeb ra toir, seemed more likik a sense of relief. long after cruz left the room, we spoke to three of his supporters. one guy said, we won texas, we were supposed to, won oklahoma. the other guy said i don't see with the math how we go forward. and another guy said, i love ted cruz, i support ted cruz, after tonight, that dog won't hunt. i don't see the clock hanging in there for us. >> that was the victory party. ted cruz was expected to do a lot better in the soutm. byron, this is all about the math the delegate math.% here with jon karl. the magic number for republicans, 1237. the number of delegates you need to secure this nomination going
1:21 am
>> a big, big night for delegates for donald trump. look at this, 192 delegates for donald trump. 66 for marco rubio. but then if you look at where the race stands overall, you get a sense of the lead that d/nald trump is building up, 274 delegates to just 149 for ted cruz. again the magic there, 1237 is where they have to get. >> the states switch to winner take all. >> especially florida, marco rubio's home state and ohio, which is of course john kasich's home state. >> which is why, matthew dowd, john kasich and marco rubio are sticking in. if they win their home states they might be able top block donald trump, get this to a brokered convention. >> the republican party which donald trump is now taking over
1:22 am
way he wants it, they started with plan a, ignore donald trump and he'll go away a. that didn't work. plan b was, find a candidate, beat donald trump and win before you get to the convention. that didn't work. the plan c is prevent donald trump from getting a majority of delegates by the time you get to cleveland and then take the nomination eye way from the plurality victor which is likely donald trump and substitute someone else in and that is fraught with risk. >> donald trump has said from the very beginning if he doesn't think he's being treated fairly by the party, he'll run as an ind e pendent. >> right now, he's holding the cards. he's using that as an option. he doesn't like the establishment ganging up against him. he doesn't like the other candidates ganging up against him. >> bill kristol, one of the
1:23 am
republican side is that threat going both ways. maybe they'll have a conservative run as a third party if donald trump gets the nomination. >> i think they're planning that matthew dowd's plan c is the one hillary clinton is winning a clear m mority of the delegates. that's the difference betwewe the parties. right. i think a lot of conservatives, republicans felt they couldn't support donald trump. we could have a third party this fall, i think. >> in the men time, kirstete an all-out effort in these two next weeks, trying to find a way to stop trump in ohio and florida. >> lot of folks view ohioo and florida as absolutely critical because of the number of delegates at stake there. by march 15th, you're looking at
1:24 am
it may be too little too late. again, we have onlnl just begun to see folks on the republican side prosecuting a side that hillary clinton is going to be showing. but at this point with donald trump so far in the lead, if you look at the next few states, poll after poll show donald trump with a big lead. >> earlier this evening, i spoke with the man who's banking all his hopes on the statete of florida. senator marco rubio from florida. we talked about his disappointing finish tonight. we're waiting to see what happens in minnesota as well. i was 15, 20 points down in virginia in every public poll. he won his home state of texas
1:25 am
>> he's beating you pretty handily. in his home state of texas, for sure. here 's the bottom line, the map from here on out, it gets better for us. his whole strategy was built on the southern states. we within on the other hand has shown growth. in virginia, we were down 20 points in every poll. we narrowed that to nothing. we feel really good about minnesota. i think looking forward at the map now, thetates to come. we'll start racking up some victories. winner take all, we love the way the map shapes up for us. especially if it's a narrower field. we have the opposite, we have people telling us, you have to fight on. that's what's happening. go to our website, marcorubio.com. i asked people to join our efforts.
1:26 am
people signing. >> up senator, your 15 points behind in florida, aren't you? excuseme, all public polls -- >> i don't believe those polls. that's one poll. no, no. we have seen other n nbers that indicate otherwise. we'll win florida, i'm confident of that. when we have time t t explain what we're exactly getting with donald trump a world-class con artist. by the way, how could the republican party ever nominate someone who refuses to condemn the did youku klux klan as he did this week. a vote for donald trump is a vote for hillary clinton and people are starting to realize it. as you watch tonight, he has underperform the public polling in every state on the map. >> that was senator marco rubio earlier today. you see that in the minnesota caucuses right there. linsey davis is in florida
1:27 am
he's talking in very confident terms in the state of florida. what we'll see over the next two weeks, to borrow a phrase from ted cruz, a carpet bombing. >> it's like the good news is, marco rubio just got his first win and the bad news is, marco rubio just got his first win. he finishes off the night 1 of 15. you really couldn't tell that based on his enthusiasm and his energy on the stage behind me tonight. and the supporters were just as jum beat. one of the first words out of his mouth, donald trump. he said, look, this guy is a con artist. the polls show in several states, donald trump's numbers are going down and our numbers are going up. the pundits say i'm an underdog and i'll accept that. because this is a country based on underdogs and we will win.

vermont. >> good evening, george, this was an early night for bernie sanders hp he was the first candidate of all of them to come tonight. comingut after his one slam-dunk of the evening, his home state of vermont. he's somebody who has to justify, rationalize his continued presence in the campaign. on the plus side, he said today, that he will finish the night with hundreds of new delegates. and he also,is campaign nounced new fund-raising totals today. for the second month in a row, they're outfund-raising hillary clinton. in february alone, he raised $42.7 million, most of that in small donations, averaging 27 bucks apiece. he says he has the means to continue in this fight. >> enough money to go all of the way to the convention. i want to go david muir, you're going through the exit polls on
1:35 am
>> the coalition that led to these victories tonight. she led among men by 53% to 45%. the breakdown of women voters on the democratic side, clearly way out ahead of sanders, 65% 33%. white voters, hillary clinton, almost a tie there. 50% 48%. when you break down black voters and latino voters. black voters, 83% to 15%. hispanic voters, 67% to 33%. gives you a clear vision of where the clinton camp plans to go. >> you have more on how she built up those numbers in south. >> these numbers are astounding. she's crushing bernie sanders. in alabama 59-point lead. 44 points in georgia. this was their strategy. they were spending a lot of time down there. they have been spending a lot of money down there.
1:36 am
mentioned 5 to 1 she's leading over black voters. but bernie sanders i not going anywhere. he's defiant tonight. he's taking this past the convention. he as the money to go far. >> jon karl, but pretty big lead for hillary clinton. >> it's a delegate tsunami for hillary clinton. lot more delegates to be allocated. she'll get a lot more and if you look athere things stand overall, the four other contests, look athis lead she has. this is where they have to go, 1,462 more to go. she's got this huge lead built up over bernie sanders and remember the democrats, every single primary and caucus is por portion portional. if he starts winning races, hillary clinton will continue to add to their total. >> i whatn't to bring that donna brazile, you know what this looks over the democratic side. once you build up, a hard lead,
1:37 am
>> we reward on the democratic performance. this is a good night for hillary clinton. no question that bernie sanders will accumulate delegates whether it's in minnesota, colorado or some of the other states. but she'll win a large chunk of delegates because she'll win those areas where the democratic performance is very, very high. >> and matthew dowd, she has a bit of a balancing act right now. she hasn't put bernie sanders away yet. she h to keep one eye on bernie sanders and one eye on the republicans and donald trump. >> i think she's turning -- she's turning full well -- we're moving toward a fascinating clash of the titans in this course of this. if donald trump continues to roll and hillary clinton continues to roll, you hav the ultimate outsider, no political
