efforts ostrengthen ties between the u.s. andhe island nation. >> neki: we are just over seven hours away from president barack obama touching down at jose martin airport, the first time a visit from aitting u.s. president has happened in nearly 90 years. and on the president's to-do list of meetings, they will start the moment he lands. >> andrew: we have a team of reporters and ahors. team coverage of the president's historicisit to cuba. calvin and victor are live from revolution plaza. good morning, guys. >> reporter: good morning, andrew and neki. the ground-breaking trip i believe is eight hours away if he lands and stays true to schedule, which he is expected to land here at about 4:50. victor, we have a long day ahead of us, the but the president has aa relatively short day in terms of his schedule, in terms of what hs going to do. >> a short day but no doubt he's going to make the most out of
9:01 am
where he's going to be at exactly what time. >> reporter: let's begin witith the schedule. we know he's going to old havana. but before he gets the old havana, he's going to be at the american embassy. the question that w all have is will president raul castro meet him at the airport. there's some doubt about whether or not that will happen when you look at the schedule. >> there has been no official comment just yet. we were thinking it would be likely that he would be there to meet with him, however, when you look at that schedule, he lands at 4:50, ten minutes before 5:00, and he's scheduled to be on the car 15 minutes after that. so that would be a short ceremony to say the least. >> reporter: then down to the american embassy, and as we know, it officially became an amereran embassy back in august of last year, and the flag went up for the very first time in more than five decades. >> reporter: then from the embassy he will head down into old havana. there he will head to the cathedral the meet with the man who was integral in the renewed talks between the united states and cuba, cardinal jamie ortega.
9:02 am
about jamae ortega. he played a major role in bringing the two countries together. let's go back to the 18 months of secret negotiations. we know cardinal jamie ortega house. esident obama gave him a letter. he took the letter to raul castro and that helped begin the whole talks of normalizing countries. >> it's been a very long process. jamie ortega seems to be in the spotlight. of course, j jie orthey -- ortega was f fnt and center along the pope. >> reporter: andnd the church played a role in the two countries coming together. we remember all too well when the pope was here back in september, thousands of people came here to revolution plaza for that moment. >> reporter: and tomorrow president obama will be right here at revolution plaza, laying a wreath at the jose mararne memorial. what makes that a little controversial this time around outside the already-instilled inherent controversy surrounding this trip is that it was a few days that venezuelan president nicolas maduro was here doing the exact same thing. >> heried the steal the
9:03 am
about the beast. we had a chance to see the beast parked behend the american embassy. i wonder why there is so much fascination with that vehicle? >> reporter: they love it. they have been calling it "the best" for a long time. they want to see the big black car the president travels in. they will get to see it firsthand today as he arrives. >> reporter: and speaking of, that let's speak a bit about how folks will be lined up we believe along a route that the president is going to travel as he goes to the american embassy at the malacone. we know the president will make the historic stop at the catholic church in old havana. i had a chance to talk with a lot of people in cuba like you about what they think of the president's trip. my reaction from a lot of people is they're really hopeful of what may come in the future. >> reporter: what i can say is om the people i've spoke within downn here, not one person, not one single person i've spoken to here in cuba has said, no, we don't think he should come here. they've all said something along the lines of, we're looking
9:04 am
this we think it's time this happens. that's what the people here have been saying. >> reporter: i spoke with one man, lazaro vives, who had some commentsor miami exiles. let's take a listen to what he had to say. >> ( translated ): i can't explain to you the emotionon i feel for obama's visit. i suffer dai when i cannot bring home food and i have kids and our salaries aren't enough to live or survive and food is scarce. >> reporter: those were the comments by lazaroro vives. he was very brave to talk with us. you had chance to go out to a park yesterday. and you had a chance to really speak with people@ about their thoughts, as well. what were some of the comments? >> reporter: and people of all ages, too. and, you know, there was one man in particular who stood out to me who said, of course we're looking forward to this. i think there's some positivity that can come from this, but at the same time, what he said is
9:05 am
way, and they may meet some of the expectations of the united states' government, but in the end he's not entirely sure how much could change in the long run. that's from how many plus years now, 50-plus years now at this point of being one way. >> reporter: well, tuesday will be a big day. the president will speak to the cuban people live on television from the theater which i i right next to the capitol. but after this speech is a baball game. we know the tampa bay rays are in town. >> reporter: the tampa bay ys will be getting here tonight i believe. and this is a game very popular. the ones who can'nd attend will be watching on tv. the stadium is being painted and spruced up. they say that hasn't happened for years. >> reporter: victor, 50,000 people were here in 1999. baltimore won first game and won 3-2. and five weeks later the cuban national team kicked their butts
9:06 am
>> reporter: we'll see wha game. contention. >> r rorter: absolutely. >> reporter: now we'll hear from dan le batard on his esp national radio game. here was his take on the game the cuban national team. >> espn gave this show, me, my to my mother. couldn't talk to her about it, so i won't go. miami understand, but i don't think anybody else understands. >> reporter: dan le batard always very el kwan whenever he decides to tackle it. his parents were both born down here. i listened to his show enough to know his stance. he describes it as something that i can relate to, when he calls it "were rowed pain." it's not his own pain. he wasn't the one with had to leave the island. it was his parents who left behind their home and all that. so that's how he describes it. >> reporter: i want t to say that's not lost on you and not lost on me and not lost on any
9:07 am
news team who are here. the president really has to be careful about how he handles this trip, especially taking a tour of old havana. he cannot look like a tourist. even more, i think when he meets with the dissidents, there has to be a sense of knowing that theifuture, the future of the cuban people has to change, and there has to be more civil rights and human rights here on the island. >> you werer here when president obama and president castro shook hands for the f fst time. how many times have we played that video at this point? all of that matters. the way that this is all going to be approached, the baseball game, how long will he be staying to watch it? will he be near raul castro during this game? these are all things we have to consider. >> reporter: the president likes to say this is a generational transition and a generational change, and i think he's speaking to your generation, cuban-americans who are younger who may not carry, even though it's borrowed pain, but may not carry the came kind of stinging pain that your parents and grandparents carried.
9:08 am
of levity with a cuban comedian. >> reporter: he's one of the most well-known entertainers here on the island. they did a sketch together. they joked about the ray's game and the beast, of course, because that's what they're hoping t t see that. was released d e day ahead of his arrival. >> reporter: let's take a listen to that. >> gracias. i think i'm all set for a re. >> reporter: and there he was talking about the beast. >> reporter: the president reaching out to the younger generation and the polls showingthat he's very popular on the island and his policies toward cuba back in t u.s. for young cuban-americans, his policy is very popular. so we have a lot of ground to cover today. once again the president arriving inn just abobo eight hours from now.

weather authority, meteorologist jennifer correa. jennifer, you didn't sthair the cuban coffee. >> jennifer: he did not. andrew, shame on you. good morning, south florida. good morning, neki and andrew. it's first day of spring. spring on the first few hours bringing us some spring showers. also very gloomy skies over looking miami. but across south florida, we're starting to see a little break in those clouds, a little more sunshine. now, here's a look at the radar, no rain to speak of for broward and miami-dade. the keys just watching some over the gulf waters here including the satellite. there we see some breaks in the clouds. it's smack in the middle of miami-dade on the west and northern end of broward county. so temperatures in suppose spots are already hitting the upper 70s. those temperatures were actually struggling to warm up. we start off in the low 70s. but anyway, as we continue on through this afternoon, we will warm up and we do expect another round of showers. i'll have more on that coming up. >> neki: thanks, jennifer. >> andrew: now to the big story of the day, president obama is set to travel to cuba

it's just the latest step in efforts to strengthen ties between the u.s. and the island nation. >> neki: we are just six hours and 48 minutes and 33 seconds away from the president touching down at jose marti airport. it's the first time such a visit from a sitting u.s. president has happened in nearly 90 years. >> andrew: the president is leaving joint base andrews at 2:05 p.m. and then he'll be landing at 4:50 at jose marti airport. om there he'll be headed to the new embassy to meet with staffers there. he'll then tour old havana before visiting a cathedral and meeting with high-ranking religious officials, including cardinal jaime ortega. >> neki: he certainly has a busy day ahead of him. so do we. we are there for him. >> christa: we have team coverage of t e president's historic visit to cuba. we'll start off with local 10 news anchor calvin hughes live from revolution plaza. good morning, calvin. >> reporter: good morning, drew, along with victor oquendo.

president will be on monday. he's going to be at the jose marti memorial right behind us for a wreath-laying ceremony. before we talk about, that let's talk a`out this is a really wig wig -- big tourism attraction in terms of folks coming out here.they love the cars out here. >> reporter: it has been for a long time. tourism has picked up substantially on the island. you can set your watch to it. at 9:00 all of the colorful old taxis you hea about and see photographs, they showed up on time with big tour bus, as well. very popular stop here. >> reporter: andrew and neki talked about the president's schedule today. we know he's goings to amerin embassy where he'll greet staff, but he's also going to go to oldhavana. he has to be very careful there not to look like a tourist, wouldn't you say? >> reporter: it's going to be tough for him to blend in, but he's going to have to be careful about every single one of these stops because he knows every single move he makes will be closely watched and criticized by a lot of people, especially who are watching us right now, the cuban-american society in miami. >> r rorter: highly

we know he's going to go to the cathedral in old havana, as well. we know that the church played a major role in normalizing relations between the two countries who nearly brought the word -- world to a nuclear war the cuban missile crisis dating back to the 1960s. >> reporter: one of his first stops todod will be meeting with jaime ortega. we know the role he p pyed in restoring the relations in speaking with the pope and speaking with president obama and raul castro. so no doubt an important stop for r esident obama. >> reporter: we've seen the comments from social media. we know pepele want the hear from cubans on the island. what do they think about the president's visit here? i spoke with one person yesterday who had this to say to miami exiles. let's take a listen. >> ( translated ): i can't explain to you the emotions i feel for obama's visit. i suffer daily when i cannot bring home food and i have kids

10:06 am
tuesday, he's going to be inviting a lot of young people, so he understands that for some people who left here many, many decades ago, he will probably never be able to change their minds. >> reporter: there is no way that in a two-day trip he will be able to fully grassen --grasp the situation down here or heal 50-plus years of suffering and hardship, but in his mind this is the right step to take foard and this is just the beginning. that's why it's so important for him to come down. >> reporter: the right step in terms of the obama doctrine, which is engagement over isolation in terms of his foreign pilicy. he understands that cuba will not change overnight. you cannot change what has happened in 55 years overnight, not toention he has to be careful not to make too in promises. there ip still the u.s.mbargo. >> reporter: there is still the u.s. embargo, which there are still billboards all around havana calling for a end to that, saying that it is genocide basically. the signs say that. and that's still a major poi
10:07 am
that i'm sure will be addressed at some point i this visit. >> reporter: a basic point of contention. we should point out that the cuban government thinks and hopes that the psident can overturn the u.s. e embargo with an executive order. that cannot happen. it will take an act of congress to change the embargo enacted in 1962, we have you covered every step of the way as the president arrives just after 4:50. we understand he's going to be taking off into the beast at 5:05, heading to the american embassy. we'll have you covered every step of the y. for my colleague here, victor o'ken oquendo, i'm calvin hughes. we'll see you on "this week in south florida." >> neki: see you then. thank you, calvin. thank you, victor. >> andrew: well, officials say nine migrants died b b 18 were rescued off the coast of florida. the u.s. coast guard says a royal caribbean cruise ship found their boat near mark yes'd. the cruise liner picked them up and is taking them to its next stop which i i in mexico. the migrants were extremely
