>> what a difference a day makes. earlier this afternoon a comfortable 65 degrees on the thermometer but tonight we are preparing for one dramatic drop, a big chill is on the way. good evening, i'm chris may. >> i'm jessica dean. meteorologist kathy orr is keeping her eye on the dramatic drop and she joins us from the cbs3 sky deck. kathy. >> earlier this evening just a light jacket. now i've got the winter coat and the scarf. we'll need the mittens by the weekend. we're talk, about the cold air invasion across the delaware valley. you can see it with our color contour. that blue is temperatures in the 30's and they are moving swiftly toward the coastal plane. right now in philadelphia it's 50. 45 in allentown, 42 in reading, even 46 degrees right now in millville and the poconos already in the 30's. to the west we go. there is the cold air in state college, pittsburgh, cleveland, buffalo, new york and that is what is heading our way. we have stiff northwesterly wind right now in

philadelphia, 12 miles an hour. elsewhere between about five and 10 miles an hour but that cold air will help it feel even colder toward tomorrow morning. here's what we'll wake up to. 30 through philadelphia, trenton, wilmington, to the south and east with the exception of the shore and 20's as you head toward the mountains. before long, we're going to be talking about temperatures below freezing in the delaware valley. i'll be back with the seven-day forecast to talk more about that and how long this cold stretch is going to last. i'll see you then >> tempers flare at a meeting in south philadelphia protesting a planned casino in that area. communities members gather to do voice their displeasure over the proposed hotel and casino on ninth and packer avenue near the sports complex. parents and students from the nearby mastery charter school say it will threaten the safety of students. so far no approval has been given for that casino to be built. we will have more on this

passionate protest on "eyewitness news" at 11:00. >> also new at 10 o'clock a double shooting in south philadelphia has left a person dead. chopper three over the 600 block of wynton street tonight. we know that a 35-year-old man there was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene. a 56-year-old man was also shot but his condition is unclear at this hour. >> it sounds like something out of a movie but today it actually happened. a spacecraft landed on a comet spiraling through space. but the mission is far from over. cbs news correspondent bigad shaban shows us what science hopes to learn. [cheers and applause] >> reporter: cheers went up in the european space agency's mission control celebrating the most expensive target shoot in history. a dishwasher sized probe landed on a comet more than 300 million miles away but after 10 years and almost $2 billion it wasn't a perfect landing. the lander might have bounced. >> maybe today we didn't just

land once, we even landed twice. [laughter] >> reporter: because the comet has very weak gravity the fillet was supposed use harpoons and a booster rocket to anchor it to the surface but neither system worked. >> we looked into the data and in it -- it's interesting and we still do not fully understand what has happened. >> reporter: the mission is to study the makeup of comets which had scientists say may have brought organic matter and water to earth billions of years ago. even if the use of the fillet is limited or lost scientists are still calling the mission a success. >> nobody has ever flown in formation with a comet like this before. they want the lander to succeed but even without it it still has to be considered a success. >> reporter: the vast majority of the mission's data is expected to come from rosetta the probe that dropped the lander. bigad shaban for "eyewitness news" on the cw philly a

couple window washers are safe after this rescue at one world trade center in lower manhattan. the two became trapped on a scaffold dangling from the new york skyscraper after one of the cables malfunctioned just around the 68th floor. the two were clinging to the side of the 104 floor tower for almost two hours until firefighters were able to cut through a window and pull them to safety. authorities were in communication with the workers throughout the rescue. >> cables did not break. the slack developed on the west side of the scaffolding causing it to go to that position. >> the wind was blowing as well so it must have been terrifying for those men. >> when i see something like that it's scary. i wouldn't want to be them. >> who would. here's the look from inside one world trade as those workers were being rescued. the skyscraper opened just last week.

it was a dangerous job. workers regularly train for situations like this one. at 1776 square feet one world trade center is the tallest building. in philadelphia our tallest skyscraper 974 feet above the ground. "eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers shows us the measures taken to keep window washers safe on the job. >> reporter: when it ended safely 68 floors above manhattan there was a collective sigh of relief not the least of which came from a man who employs people just like the two who were saved. >> about 60, 70 of them are rappelling on buildings or doing highrise or facade services every day. marty owns jenkintown building services. his workers use the same sort of equipment as seen today. he says scenes like this one are incredibly rare. >> more of our accidents happen with a guy tripping on a sidewalk looking up at a building stepping in a

pothole. the main it's amazingly reliable. >> reporter: officials say slack developed in the cable holding up the left side of the platform causing it to fall. he says a number of things could have gone wrong including a brake failure in the system's motor. another possible culprit. >> there's the suspension device from the roof so we really don't know yet what could have failed. >> reporter: but he's interested to find out. >> i would want to see if that tells us anything about system changes, procedures that need to be retooled. >> reporter: constant maintenance is also a must he says as is making sure workers are following strict guidelines. another key part of safety marty says is simply remembering where you are. believe it or not if you're a worker who rappels off of buildings like this one regularly and there's relatively few accidents it's easy to forget how dangerous this kind of work can be. >> i never want to take for granted what we do and how careful we have to be. >> reporter: matt rivers, "eyewitness news" on the cw philly. >> developing now, new jersey police are asking for the public's help to identify the

mother of an infant girl whose remains were found at a recycling facility. the discovery was made at the recommunity recycling plant on railroad avenue in farmingdale borough monmouth county tuesday afternoon. bloodstained clothes were found near the remains and police hope someone may recognize this clothing to help identify the mother of the child. anyone with information is asked to call police. an investigation is under way after a toddler drowned in a day-care center's gold fish pond. chopper three over the 900 block of shar lane and millville cumberland county. the owner told police on tuesday she discovered the 15 month old boy miss when did you go she returned to the yard after tend to go one of the other children. she found him in that pond and called 911. the day care has not reopened. new information tonight in the deaths of a three-year-old in chester county allegedly beaten to death by his mother and her boyfriend. a prosecutor now says staff at an elementary school in

coatesville district visited an outdated address while trying to check on the brother of scotty mcmillan. scotty died november 4th at a trail interwest caln township. his six-year-old brother missed kindergarten for two weeks before his death. the school district said it made multiple attempts to contact the parents and find out where scotty was. >> police in atlantic county insist the public is not in danger even after a second grader and his mother were found dead inside a burn home. investigators believe that fire was intentionally set in the 200 block of washington avenue in egg harbor city this morning. police say there was a man at the house who needed to go to the hospital for undisclosed injuries. they say that he claimed to know what happened here. >> he was telling them that somebody broke into the house. >> the arson dog is looking to see if there are any flammable liquids. we're considering it suspicious at this time. >> police won't comment on their thoughts on the man's story. they say they do not have any

suspects. concerned parents and staff members are demanding the philadelphia school district increase security at bartram high school. dozens rallied outside the school in kingsessing this morning. their call for action follows the attack on substitute teacher piwu johnson which happened recently in hallway there. a student allegedly attacked that man. three teachers in all have been assaulted at bartram in just the past month. >> boy, that can't be my grandchild telling me. >> the school's principal says home and school association is needed to get parents more involved in the school. the attorney general eric holder thanks the fbi and philadelphia police for bringing the kidnapped victim carlesha home to her family. that phone call came today, the same day delvin barnes made his first appearance in a

federal courtroom in philadelphia. during that appearance he asked the court to appoint an attorney. right now it's unclear if barnes is on suicide watch as he was when he was incarcerated in virginia. he'll be back in court on friday for a bail hearing. >> the man accused of ditching a corvette into the delaware river in a ditch of course dispute has surrendered to police. "eyewitness news" was there today as john kramer turned himself in at northeast detectives. he has admited to driving a red corvette into the delaware two days ago. he says it was retaliation for not getting the minivan he wanted from his estranged wife as well as overall frustration with a three year divorce process. >> didn't realize i did anything wrong. going to go in and try to get the car. i didn't want anything to do with it. >> kramer is now facing numerous charges. he's blaming this episode on his bipolar disorder. >> much more to come tonight on "eyewitness news" at 10:00. >> we'll tell you how local women are learning to defend

"eyewitness news" at crozer chester medical center where melina clayton and the baby are resting comfortably tonight. she and her mother-in-law jumped in the car in boothwyn to try to make it to the hospital. they had to take matters into their own hands when they got stuck in traffic. >> the car stopped and i can tell that this baby is coming and she's coming fast. >> i just waited a minute and she turned her little head to the side and i reached for her and she just came right out into my arms. >> how about that? mom and grandmom both credit 911 which they say they called when they pulled over for helping them deal with this most unusual delivery. >> way to go, grandmom.

nice job. most americans know about large data breaches, they know they've affected a number of retailers banks and online sites over the past year. >> as jim donovan finds, that's not changing the majority of shoppers' habits. >> reporter: charles goldfine says he's not worried about anyone getting ahold of hissy cure information online. >> there's a possibility that it will happen to me and if it does i'll deal with it but the likelihood is that it won't. >> reporter: he's not alone. a new survey from the information technology security association says 94 percent of consumers are familiar with security breaches that came to light over the past year at retailers including target and home depot. three-quarters of those surveyed said they're concerned but many are not doing much about it. the study shows only 45 percent of consumers changed their online passwords or pin numbers. just 28 percent shopped less at retailers affected by data breaches. 23 percent used cash more often instead of credit cards and only 15 percent made fewer

online purchases on their mobile devices. >> people want to do the right things but they have to get beyond this complacency and convenience factor. >> reporter: bianca frederick is taking no chances. >> i try make sure my passwords and user names are different. >> reporter: they recommend consumers use passwords that are strong and unique. they also recommend using security software to protect your information. reporting for three on your side, i'm jim donovan. >> the holiday shopping season is almost here and some women are getting ready for it in an unconventional way. >> little bit different. skills that are learned are useful well beyond the holiday season. >> temperatures are falling and falling fast with a clear sky and a northwesterly wind across the delaware valley our eyewitness weather watchers are reporting falling temperatures in most locations. let's start off with barbara, one of our new weather watchers, she's in willow grove. not much wind but the temperature 44 degrees. she's saying the stars are out but it is starting to get cold. little bit farther to the south and east of philadelphia, let's go down the shore, in ocean city where james is reporting a temperature of 50 degrees. so, a little bit milder there and as we go to the north and west, we're going to our where robert is reporting a temperature of 44 and he also sent in this spectacular picture from earlier today, the foliage in glen moore pa. sign up now, go to cbsphilly.com/watcher. outside the temperatures are falling fast. the cold air is moving in,

even down the shore in atlantic city. this is a view from our skycam3. no more 60's, no more 70's until further notice but look at some of these highs today. in pennington 70 degrees. the high in dover at the air force base looking good at 69, pomona atlantic city force base looking good at 69, bell at wings field airport 68. unfortunately that's a thing of the past now. the temperatures will go some 10 to 20 degrees colder tomorrow than they were today. right now in philadelphia still sitting at 50. wildwood 52. but elsewhere cold temperatures. to the west temperatures mainly in the 30's, some 20's as you head toward saint louis and look at this the heart of the cold air still in the plains, omaha 19, annapolis 21, nine below in cheyenne. they have been in it all week and it will couldn't for them as well. storm scan3 shows clouds to the west. clearing skies over us. in the wake of this cold front plenty of sunshine for

thursday, highs only in the 40. we'll watch this area of low pressure skirt off the eastern seaboard. perhaps a few showers late tomorrow afternoon and evening. friday just cold again. saturday the same thing. sunday the same thing. once we get stuck in this cold weather rut it will be with us right through the seven-day forecast. even gets colder. overnight mainly clear, a little bit breezy, the low 37 in the city, colder in our suburbs. for thursday the high 49 degrees. that is going to be at least 20 degrees colder than it was today. today's high 70 degrees and an evening shower possible. on the exclusive eyewitness weather seven-day forecast, look at these numbers. 40's across-the-board. next wednesday 39 degrees. morning lows over the weekend in the 30's. that is the coldest air of the season. want to remind everyone while we're talking about the cold, my exclusive winter forecast is coming up in less than an hour on cbs3 "eyewitness news" at 11:00. we'll talk about snow, we'll talk about cold, we'll talk about how much you're going to be shoveling or maybe your children will be shoveling.
