♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> bundled up against the cold. text venturing out in old city tonight in full winter weather gear and winter hasn't even arrived yet. it's only going to get colder. good evening, i'm natasha brown. thanks for joining us. it feels like december out there tonight. really really cold night. let's get over to meteorologist justin drabick. he's here to tell us how it's going to get. this cold air not going anywhere any time soon. get ready for temperatures to stay december like the next several days. these are the current numbers. we have highs today only in the mid 40s. 34 at the airport. 20 already up in mount pock know. 29 degrees in allentown. look at some of these suburbs. already down to 25 degrees this hour in quakertown.

and again early in the night. we'll drop a few more degrees. northeast philadelphia hanging in at 35. now i want to talk about the temperature change compared to yesterday at this time. we're actually colder tonight from about three to 9 degrees colder so, yes, that cold air mass settling if any class cross the delaware valley. part of the problem fort cold air is the clear skies. not much going on here on storm scan3. but notice some clouds to the west near harrisburg. they'll stream in tonight. so once these clouds start to move overhead, temperatures should level off a little bit but it's just down right cold. morning temperatures tomorrow many spots will be in the 20s to the low 30s by the time you wake up. not much of a rebound tomorrow. limited sunshine. mostly cloudy skies. temperature around 48 for the high for philadelphia. 50 at the shore near 40 degrees in the poconos. coming up in the extended forecast we'll talk about rain on the way and another arctic blast with temperatures even colder. you can check the latest forecast any time on the new cbs philly weather app check live radar get weather alerts and

"eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers is live in philadelphia's manayunk neighborhood with this video. matt? >> reporter: natasha, it was one week ago that the two suspects were sitting behind thee on these steps noun the brand new venice island popping arts center has to deal with damage like this. security cam did just what it's meant to do, clearly showing the two suspects as they begin their vandalism. you can see one of them swing under a railing and begin kicking over lights in the mulch one by one until all are knocked over. >> they don't understand, you know, the time and energy that goes into these places and it's a big deal for people. it's very sad. >> reporter: that same suspect then sits on the steps and starts picking at led lighting that illuminates the stairs at night appearing toy us a small tool he pops out the light strip

and they shut off. >> so unnecessary. you got this great facility here that was just -- it was just put in and that's the way it gets treated for no reason that makes sense. >> reporter: the surveillance video ends with that same suspect throwing the lights in the air. police say both suspects appear to be teenagers. their vandalism tarnishing the opening of the venice island popping arts center. >> i know manayunk is trying to revamp around here and it's just sad someone would do this to such a nice building. >> reporter: and the damage here is estimated to be upwards of $30,000. we're live in manayunk tonight matt rivers "eyewitness news" at 10:00 on the cw philly. >> all right. matt, thank you very much. tensions are also high in ferguson missouri as the town awaits the grand jury's announcement on whether to indict the police officer who killed unarmed teenager michael brown. a decision is expected very soon. newly released video shows that officer dare rin wilson leaving a hospital shortly after the august 9th shooting.

attorneys for the brown family shows the initial description of wilson's injuries during a struggle with brown were exaggerated. meantime philadelphia and other big cities are preparing for possible demonstrations after the verdict is announced. >> and delaware state police released this mug shot of robbery suspect william mcnulty. he was shot and killed by troopers in claymont yesterday afternoon. police were pursuing him after they connected him to an armed robbery at an atm and 7eleven store. after being cornered at harvey road and garfield avenue, police say mcnulty put the car in reverse and accelerated toward the troopers. and that's when police say they opened fire. new tonight, penn state's president says that he will now thoroughly review the free report that included that high high-ranking university leaders concealed key facts about jerry sandusky' as abuse of children to try to avoid bad publicity. the 2012 report has divided the university and alumni. some have criticized the findings that led to the severe

ncaa football sanctions. president eric -- baron doesn't anyone to believe that the university was quote hiding something. >> and volunteers are now spending their weekend repairing a home for disabled veterans that was damaged by fire. dozens cleaned up the rooms at the dillard house in north philly. "eyewitness news" here on the 30 hounded dread block of north 22nd street. last fridays' fire broke out inside a third floor room and one resident was killed. volunteers have been very busy today. >> we've put in some windows. we've washed down some walls so far. we've just cleaned up some -- got rid of some trash inside the rooms and things like that. >> investigators say it appears the fire victim fell asleep while smoking in his room. crews are ready to give it yet another shot. work resumes to remove the remaining iconic letters from a top a philadelphia high rise tomorrow. back in august, if you'll recall, workers used a

helicopter to remove the pnb letters from one south broad. the operation had to be suspended because the letters were more fragile than first thought. only three of the 12 letters were removed. there will be road closures in that area so do you want to give yourself a little extra time to get around. >> also now the latest afford care ability act open enrollly period began today and the city of philadelphia is working to get the uninsured covered. >> get covered. >> mayor michael nutter cut the ribbon officially opening up the northern liberties community center to all those seeking information on health plans. enrollment assistants will help residents sign up for coverage in the hell insurance marketplace place. and president obama is also urging consumers to go to the health care website and review their options. more than 7 million people got insurance through the program for 2014. and many experienced technical nightmares with health care.gov. well this year there have been no reports of any problems.

he says they could end up saving money or possibly finding a better plan. >> on average they're paying just $82 a month for coverage. a lot of people that's less than a cell phone bill or a cable bill. insurance companies can no longer deny you coverage just because you have a pre-existing condition. and they now have to cover free preventive care like check ups and mammograms. >> this year open enroll role many ends february 15th. it is one of the most memorable scenes in film history when rocky balboa runs up the art museum steps in philadelphia. well today thousands braced this bitter cold morning to do the exact same thing run like a champ. from sierra leone today. reporter danielle nottingham has the details. >> reporter: dr. martin salia land the in omaha saturday afternoon then went by ambulance to nebraska medical center where he is under going treatment. the 44 year old surgeon was working at a hospital in the ebola zone in see err ya leone capital of free town but not with ebola patients. he started showing symptoms last week. a medical team in says he was critically ill when he left for the u.s. >> we should keep calm. everything is going to be okay and so far he's responding very well to treatment. he's a citizen of sierra leone who lives in maryland with his wife and two children. his son says his father was aware of the risks going to work in west africa. >> the fact that he left here and go back to his country, that made me worry a little bit especially when he said doctor and he treat patients much that's the parts that's scary. you don't know who has the vir

virus. >> salism a during an april interview why he went to help his country man. i took this job because i want to. there was a calling and i go. >> nebraska medical center is one of four u.s. hospitals with special units to treat people with highly infectious diseases. he's the third ebola patient to undergo treatment there. eight of the nine ebola patients treated so far in the u.s. have survived. danielle nottingham for "eyewitness news" on the cw philly. >> some of the world's biggest music stars gathered in london to raise funds to ease africa's ebola crisis. their record agnew version of the band-aid charity single do they know it's christmas. the single was first recorded 30 years ago to raise funds for famine relief in evening yo what ya. one direction and seal are a few in this star-studded lineup of musicians. >> some incredible video from china shows about two dozen or so people coming to the rescue of a woman who was trapped

underneath of a car. you need to see this. you can see there the white car crashing into a moped and then running over the moped's driver. passerbies rushed to the woman's aid and managed to free her in less than a minute or so. emergency crews rushed her to the hospital and amazingly despite that chaotic and very frightening seen she only suffered minor scratches. >> after a journey of 10 years and 310 million miles, the mission may be over for a history making space probe. the battery is dead. it landed on a comet on wednesday wasn't supposed to keep transmitting data from the comet for six to nine months as it passed the sun. but the probe landed on the comet's dark side away from the sun and so its solar panel which is not generate any power. >> not much sun in northern plains. digging out. this is how people spent their day in parts of the country. this is sioux falls, south dakota where several inches of snow are on the ground.

heading out you'll need the heavy coat no matter where you are. we're talking about temperatures in the 20s and theirs. live look at center city. clear skies right now that will be changing over the next few hours or so. here we are officially at the airport. 34 degrees in philadelphia. 29 already in allentown. 20 in mount pocono. many spots across south jersey and pinelands down into the lower 20s this hour. we do have lot of cold air still to the north and west upper 20s cleveland and pittsburgh that chilly air mass sticks around for at least another 24 hours. clear skies over us right now we're losing whatever heat we had today right back into the atmosphere. our temperatures dropped off fast tonight. notice the clouds streaming in from the west. once those clouds move in they'll try to hold whatever heat is left. temperatures should level off later on overnight. snow showers out towards chica chicago. this disturbance pretty much heads northward. we'll get clouds out of it. the main energy still back across the central u.s. that will bring our next storm system for monday much once that storm passes get another for another shot of arctic air. if you thought today and the

last few days were cold this is going to be even colder. 15 to 20 degrees below average. highs going to be stuck in the 30s. we do have some rain on the way. still dry on sunday. finish the weekend on the dry side just mostly cloudy skies. temperatures in the 40s. here comes the next storm. periods of rain arriving early on monday. through the afternoon it will come to an end later monday evening. and then we see that shot of arctic air building in, monday night to tuesday. temperatures for tuesday only in the 30s. it will be very windy so the wind chill values will feel much colder than that. check out all the purple here. that's that arctic air that starts to push south and east. it arrives tuesday stick around wednesday and then finally by the end of next week, it slowly retreats back to where it should be up in the can in a today. clouds roll in overnight tomorrow. just mostly cloudy day maybe a few peeks of sun early in the day. could be pockets of freezing rain in the poconos. change over to all rain could be heavier showers at times monday

afternoon. gone by monday evening. back to sunshine tuesday. but down right cold. how much rain we talking about? could be up around half an inch in many spots. some spots could closer to 1 inch. so healthy storm system that will push through the delaware valley. temperature wise again cold start tomorrow morning. trying to get to the mid and upper 40s for afternoon highs on sunday. milder on monday looks like we start to is he lower 50s returning especially south and east of the city. it's cold overnight partly cloudy 32 for center city. 20s already in the suburbs. chilly on sunday mostly cloudy up around 48 degrees. here we government the extended forecast near 50 on monday. expect periods of rain. that storm is out of here by monday night. and then there's the cold again. 37 for the high that's not factoring in the wind on tuesday. still in the 30s wednesday. by the end of the week, slow warmup back into the 40s but still that's below average for this time of year. check this out. a great turn out today at the plymouth meeting mall for "eyewitness weather" kid casters i was there along with other
