>> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> well, we have our eye on a storm tonight. this video from is from croydon bucks county where there were reports of some sleet earlier tonight but our biggest threat will be the rain and it could fall very heavy at times. live storm scan3 is tracking the storm as it moves north. a wet start to your work week. good evening, i'm natasha brown. the storm could certainly dump a lot of rain across the region. let's get you right over to meteorologist justin drabick. he has the latest on what we can expect when we wake up. boy, i guess it's going to be messy, hm, justin. >> that's right, natasha. wet start to the work week. get those umbrellas and rain jackets out there. it's going to slow things down for the commute. check out what's happening right now, initial round of light rain pushing into the area. we had reports of sleet in

some spots earlier. look like the warm air has overtaken the region. generally looking at a plane rain. to the north we go. pocono region, carbon monroe county little bit of light showing up. we're seeing light snow and possibly sleet. that spot is under a winter weather advisory until 9 o'clock monday morning so carbon and monroe counties those spots have potential to see a little bit of a wintry mix. we'll break it down for you. in the advisory area some slight snow, sleet and freezing rain through the overnight expecting little or no snow accumulation. there could be up to .10 of an inch of ice accumulation. if this will change to plain rain early monday morning. elsewhere throughout the delaware valley for monday we'll break it down for you periods of rain pretty much any time through the day. three-quarters of an inch to possibly 1 inch of rain before the storm is out of here by the evening hours. heaviest rain will be in the afternoon but both commutes morning and evening will be on the slower side. temperatures above freezing.

that's good news. 30's and 40's, the exception mount pocono close to that freezing mark. we'll talk about another arctic blast behind the storm system in the seven-day forecast but you can keep an eye on the storm with the new cbsphilly weather app. check live radar get weather alerts and share your wrotey photos with us. it's available now in itunes and google play. natasha. >> justin thank you. a 10-year-old boy is hospitalized after police say he accidentally shot himself with his father's gun. we're told it happened while the boy was waiting in a car outside of an auto repair shop in sharon hill. "eyewitness news" reporter steve pattersons had details. >> he was lifeless at the time that we arrived. >> reporter: it is not clear if the boy police say accidentally shot himself in the head willfully or even partially recover. what is clear, at least to the chief, if it wasn't for the quick response of two officers, recovery would not be an option right now. >> first responding officers accident happened the child right away but him in a police car, one drove one did cpr.

i'm glad to be standing here saying that. >> reporter: shortly before 10:30 saturday night two young siblings a boy and girl were in their dad's car. he was wrapping up work as a mechanic at this auto repair shop in the 1400 block of calcon hook road. that's when police say his 10-year-old son found a gun and accidentally shot himself. his sister ran for help. >> entered his right jaw and i believe the exit wound was in the back of the head. >> reporter: darby township police chief leonard mcdevitt says the gun is a .357 magnum. >> which is extremely powerful weapon. >> reporter: police are investigating who the owner is and how it ended up in the hands of a child. while that boy continues to fight for the life he nearly lost. >> the child is extremely lucky to be alive. like i said thanks to the quick work and smart reactions of two police officers. >> reporter: another thing that is any other clear in this case is whether or not the delaware district attorney will decide to file charges against the father for the son finding the gun in this case.

that, of course, will depend much more on the ongoing police investigation. for now, reporting from the children's hospital of philadelphia, i'm steve patterson, "eyewitness news" on the cw philly. >> well, one man was killed after what was believed to be a drag race on the streets of south philadelphia. the car came to rest against a utility pole here at columbus boulevard and east oregon avenue. the 32-year-old male driver was the only person in the car at the time. there's no word if any other vehicles may have been involved. and there is new video, it surfaced today from the isis militant group after the beheading of american aide worker peter kassig. kassig had been held hostage over a year. cbs news correspondent wendy gillette has more from new york. >> reporter: islamic state militants posted the video online early sunday. it shows a masked isis militant dressed in black claiming he beheaded american aide worker peter kassig.

>> this is peter edward kassig a u.s. citizen of your country. >> reporter: unlike previous isis videos this one did not show kassig alive before the beheading only the aftermath but there are similarities to the execution videos of four other westerners. >> does seem to be the same person and obviously inside the government working very hard to exactly identify him, anything we can learn about him. >> reporter: the masked man who speaks in a british accent also warns isis will attack americans on u.s. streets. kassig was captured in syria a little more than a year ago. the 26-year-old former army ranger turned aide worker converted to islam and changed his name to abdul rahman while in captivity n a statement his parents said we are heartbroken to learn that our son abdul rahman peter kassig has lost his life as a result of his love for the syrian people and his desire to ease their suffering: they also released an audio recording of their son talking about his work. >> i was able to share a little bit of hope and comfort with some people. >> reporter: the kassigs

plan to speak at a church in indianapolis monday afternoon. wendy gillette for "eyewitness news" on the cw philly. >> well, bill cosby isn't talking about the resurgence of sexual abuse allegations but his attorney s his lawyer released a statement reading in part "the fact that they are being repeated does not make them true. he says the philly born entertainer will not dignify, quote, decade old discreeted allegations with a response. cosby settled a suit back in 2006 which claims he assaulted and drugged women inside his home. he's never been criminally charged. his appearance on the late show has been canceled. crews come back to finish what they started over the summer. the final letters were removed from what was once philadelphia national bank. reporter syma chowdhury shows us how crews changed the city skyline today. >> reporter: this p will now

stand for the word past, that is because it is a past memory you will see these iconic letters in the philadelphia skyline. crews tried for a second time to remove the famous pnb letters on top of the highrise on one south broad street. it had stood there for more than 50 years. without the letters, the building looks different to life long philadelphians. >> it looks real naked. i can't believe they took it down. >> reporter: back in august, crews attempted to take down the 12 letters but only managed to remove three. each letter was about 16 feet tall and 3,000 pounds. the letters were in poor condition possessing a safety hazard. >> they're so big, huge and heavy. >> reporter: during the first attempt crews learned the letters were in worse shape than originally thought. sunday morning a chopper came in with a plan b to safely remove the remaining nine letters. it took crews about 30 minutes to do so and caused some commotion and road closures. the n was the last letter to go. it represented the word new as

in new skyline. >> philadelphia doing a lot of new things, so i guess that's good for the city. >> reporter: wells fargo bank leases part of the building and was responsible for the letters. a spokesperson said earlier this year they have no plans on replacing the letters, so philadelphians will have no choice but to get used to this new look. in center city, syma chowdhury, "eyewitness news" on the cw philly. >> well, you know, it was a chance for the eagles to cement themselves as a top contender in the league but things didn't go quite as well as fans had hoped today. eyewitness sports director beasley reece is in the cbs3 sat center tonight with the highlights or low lights from lambeau field. hey, beas. >> hey, natasha. well, the packers are a better football team. they proved it on the field. the eagles were dominated from the opening to the final.

aaron rogers had three touchdowns. eagles defense tried to pressure him in the second half but he showcased his total game by running away from trouble. the packers like the eagles last week against carolina scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams. the packers crushed the eagles 53 to 20. >> now we're going to find out who we are, what kind of team we have. >> it's easy when you're on the other end of this thing like we were last year and you're on national tv and everything is going great and you can't miss and we score a lost points and defense, you know, special teams, score, that's fun and it's easy but now it's tough and this is going to be a really good test for this team. >> okay, so seven and three with a bad loss in green bay, still a good start. keeping the eagles on track for a playoff run. the game tells me the packers are trending towards elite status while the birds have a good team with plenty of time to improve. lesley van arsdale will have more in sports.

>> storm scan3 tracking a storm that will bring lots and lots of rain to the area. meteorologist justin drabick will be back with what conditions will be like as you're driving into work in the morning. that's coming up in just a couple minutes or so. also tomorrow will be four months since malaysia airlines flight 17 crashed in ukraine killing all 298 people on board. today crews began recovering at least some of the wreckage.

it will all be taken to the netherlands where engineers will be rebuilding a section of the aircraft in an attempt to figure out exactly what happened. also new amateur video has surfaced reportedly showing the immediate aftermath of the crash. it was obtained by the associated press television network. you can see people there gathering around as thick plumes of smoke rise from a field where that plane came down. 172 people are being treated now for norovirus after getting sick on a nearly month long cruise. more than 4100 people traveled on the crown princess to hawaii and tahiti. they returned to california today. now the cdc says 158 people on board are sick. in april 129 people on the same ship contracted norovirus during a seven-day crews. and a plan is killed after being pushed in front of a new york city subway train. this happened this morning just as a train was arriving at a station in the bronx.

investigators say the 61-year-old victim was standing with his wife at the time when another man approached them from behind. nearby surveillance cameras did catch the suspect on tape but he remains on the loose at this hour. a 14-year-old boy survives a fall from a ferris wheel. this happened last night at a festival in phoenix, arizona. police say the boy fell 15 to 30 feet. he was taken to the hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. tonight they're investigating the events that led up to that fall. >> well, it doesn't take much wintry weather to turn roads into ice rinks. check this out. a truck slid sideways and landed in an em bank n oklahoma city today. it was a lot of the snow on the road but it was enough to make travel treacherous. only takes a little bit of glaze of ice or snow to cause problems out there. good news for us, temperatures above freezing right now so we're mainly looking at a plane rain event.

system that's getting its act together across the deep south. we're in the initial stages of that pushing any other delaware valley. snow breaking out from the great lakes to the midwest. that snow stays north and west because that's where all the cold air is. we'll see light rain continuing to develop overnight. exception is poconos, little bit of snow, sleet, freezing rain up there. we're warming up, though. compared to this time yesterday anywhere from about six to 17 degrees warmer, so that storm is bringing in some milder air. here we are 42 degrees officially at the airport, 33 in mount pocono so getting close to that freezing mark. 39 reading, well into the 40's across south jersey and delaware. here's the setup. cold front will move in from the west tomorrow, it draws in the warmer air. we'll talk about highs in the 50's on monday but watch out, periods of rain all day long. you'll need that umbrella, rain jacket. looks like the heaviest rain will be during the afternoon. will it come to an end in the evening and once that front passes, here we go again, another shot of arctic air, true arctic air. this is going to be colder

than the past few days. highs on tuesday and wednesday only in the 30's. factor in the wind it will feel more like the teen and 20's at times both on tuesday into wednesday afternoon. so, again, rain overspreads the region overnight. tomorrow morning commute 7:00 a.m. watch out for pockets of rain. looks like the heaviest rain will arrive during the afternoon. this will slow the evening commute down as well. 8, 9 o'clock or so steady rain is gone and we'll start to see the clearing skies. wind kicks up and here come the cold air. how much rain are we talking about? over an inch in some spots. notice the blue area over much of the delaware valley. that could be an inch to maybe an inch and a quarter. this is good news though. we're down over two and a half inches of rain since september 1st so this is some welcome rain. temperatures well into the 50's tomorrow from the city on south and east. look at that, may even hit 60 in dover delaware and parts of south jersey, little cooler to the north and west, in the 40's. this is tuesday. these aren't low temperatures. these are the afternoon temperatures. highs only in the low to mid 30's. let's talk about that wind chill. what's it going to feel like?

tuesday morning when you get up single digits and teens many spots. not much better into the afternoon. it will feel like the teens to the 20's despite the sunshine. overnight we'll see that rain continuing to move in. it's chilly, 39 for center city low temperature. periods of rain during the day monday heaviest during the afternoon, high temperature of around 55 degrees. again the evening hours we'll see improving conditions, that storm moving out. sunshine returns for tuesday and wednesday but a high temperature of only 35 degrees both days. end of the week more sunshine, slightly warmer, in the 40's. then looks like next weekend getting closer to average by sunday back up to around 50 degrees with more rain late in the day. so, a couple can of rough days coming up. we got rain tomorrow and then the cold sets in for the middle of the week. >> that drop off is unbelief available. >> yeah, kind of hits you. >> thank you justin. appreciate it. >> talk about a rough day. >> talk about a rough day, oh boy. >> we all know playing at lambeau field against aaron rogers isn't easy. packers showing the eagles why
