>> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> a soggy saturday. umbrellas are as important as the cold weather gear. it's been a nasty night to be outside tonight and we're not done with this rain just yet. take at a look there. you can see all of that green on storm m scan3 still at this hour. good evening, i'm natasha brown. thanks for joining us. so when are we finally going to dryout that's been my question all day. let's get over to meteorologist justin drabick he's tracking the rain for us. >> i'm sure a lot of people are wondering there 'cause it is the weekend. good news, sunday looks like we keep things dry. back edge of the rain moving through western areas of delaware county, give it another two, three hours to come through philadelphia and improving conditions after

midnight. we have drier air moving in from the north. you can feel the difference with that northerly breeze starting to kick on up but again, still steady rains continuing across delaware, new jersey and parts of philadelphia. how that rain did we get so far today? decent amount? it has been instead all day long. areas in green extreme southeast pennsylvania, parts of central new jersey up to an inch of rain so far so many areas may be getting over an inch of rain before the storm system moves on out of here through the overnight hours. here's what to expect. still over the next few hours periods of rain. end after midnight west to east. watch out for ponding on the roads. turning breezy. temperatures will drop back into the 30's. here we are right now 43 at the airport, run in allentown and reading, some of the suburbs already dropping to the up are 30's this hour in quakertown and in doylestown. winds kicking up out of the north, 15 almost 20 miles per hour and that gusty wind will continue tomorrow but at least the sunshine will be out. temperatures cool though, 40's, low 40's for

"eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers is live in manayunk. he's got the latest in the search. matt. >> reporter: natasha, we were reporting last saturday from almost the exact same location on this story and yet over the last week, hundreds of volunteers searching for shane montgomery have turned up little, if anything further about what happened to the young man early thanksgiving morning. >> what happened to shane and. >> reporter: sharon montgomery shane's mother summoned the strength for yet another afternoon press conference saturday calling for help in what has become a

positivity in the worst of times. >> green is shane's favorite color and it's a sign of hope for me and my family. >> reporter: and shane's family also tells us that there will be a special rosary service here at saint john the baptist church held tomorrow night in his honor. we're live in manayunk tonight, matt rivers, "eyewitness news" at 10:00 on the cw philly. >> well, following some breaking news. police in philadelphia investigating a murder about 90 minutes or so ago a man was found dead on north sid ham street from multiple gun shot and stab wounds. the victim has not been identified and no arrests have been made. a pedestrian was killed after he was struck by two vehicles in a hit and run crash in montgomery county. the search is now on for those drivers. this all happened near rambo and ford streets in bridgeport last night. the male victim was first struck by a ford explorer. police say the driver stopped for a moment and then fled the scene.

the victim was then struck by a dark green cadillac or lincoln suv. police say the driver of that vehicle just kept going as well. and developing tonight, a failed rescue attempt ends in the death of an american hostage in yemen. as cbs correspondent danielle nottingham reports, president obama is condemning the murder. >> reporter: u.s. officials say al-qaeda linked militants in yemen killed photo journalist luke somers early saturday during a u.s. rescue. >> reporter: the operation lasted about 30 minutes and during the mission special forces lost the element of surprise. navy seals saw a militant go into the building where they thought somers was being held. when they entered somers and another hostage south african teacher pierre corky had been shot. >> it was a very dangerous and complicated mission. >> reporter: president obama

authorized the rescue mission friday believing somers' life was in imminent danger. thursday al-qaeda in the arabian peninsula posted a video threatening to kill the american. 33-year-old was kidnapped in september 2013. this was the second attempt to rescue him. in late november navy seals raided a cave in yemen but he wasn't there. >> this is further evidence of america's continued commitment to always find its american hostages no matter where they are and make every effort to get those hostages returned. >> reporter: president obama strongly condemned the killing saying those who seek to harm u.s. citizens will feel the long arm of american justice. danielle nottingham for "eyewitness news" on the cw philly. >> well, somers and corky were alive but gravely wounded when the u.s. special forces reached them.

they died after receiving medical care. and funeral services meantime they were held today for three children killed in a murder-suicide in tabernacle, new jersey. family and friends they all gathered at the church of the holy eucharist on medford lakes road. they said goodbye to 14-year-old nicholas herman, eight year old nadia and 11 year old alexander. police say jen lepage shot the three children inside their home before taking her own life. members of the unitarian universal lift church in cherry hill stood in silence to remember eric garner today. the protest was sparked by a new york grand jury's decision not to indict a police officer in the chokehold death of garner on wednesday. the church is calling for peace and justice for all people. and phoenixville's annual firebird festival suffers a set back after someone set fire to the festival's center piece just hours before the

event was to begin today. chopper three was over the 30-foot high wooden phoenix yesterday. the bird is set on fire during the festival to symbolize the former steel town's renaissance through arts and culture. someone burned down the phoenix about 3:30 this morning. authorities say they have no suspects just yet. the festival went on as planned today. and new tonight the philadelphia parking authority has announced that there will be relaxed enforcement on kiosk parking spaces in the city for this sunday only. the ppa says this is due to a technical problem having to do with credit card payments at the kiosk. any citizen who received a parking violation on friday or saturday due to the credit card al malfunction may bring this to the attention of the ppa's customer service department. also new tonight at 10 o'clock, take a look at this, a deer burst through the front doors of a house in galloway township and ransacked it. this happened on northampton

passengers were checked by medics but are said to be okay. all passengers have been rebooked and the plane is currently being checked. actor mark wahlberg is asking massachusetts to wipe out his decades olds assault conviction. back in 1988 wahlberg severely beat two men while trying to steal alcohol. the attack left one of the men blind in one eye. wahlberg says the pardon would be formal recognition that someone can receive public redemption if he devotes himself to a life of good works. no word on when governor duval patrick will make a decision. dozens turned out for an open casting call for the new rocky spinoff movie. potential background players showed off their skills at south philadelphia high school today. the film is called creed and it stars sylvester stallone. he's reprising his role of rocky balboa. production will begin january 26. it runs through the end of march here in the philadelphia area.

now the count do you to christmas is on. shoppers out in full force this weekends. gloucester township police officers they took some deserving children shopping today. "eyewitness news" at the target on berlin cross keys road. this is all part of the department's heroes and helpers program. afterward the kids met with santa claus at the nearby chick-fil-a where they had lunch. my favorite place. and santa claus aka the philly phanatic made an appearance at citizens bank park today. "eyewitness news" at the majestic can clubhouse store. young fans lined up for their chance to take a holiday picture with the phanatic and also to get a new cop pea of his children's book. flyers fans and their family got a chance to skate on the wells fargo says tonight just like their favorite players. they also enjoyed app behind the scenes locker room tour an visit from santa. everyone had a great time as you can imagine out there. >> certainly a good place to

be inside today 'cause if you were outside obviously you need that raincoat and umbrella and that's the trend into tonight. we'll check in with our weather watchers looking at temperatures right now in the 40's but let's talk about how much rain we've seen today. pretty good amounts, over half inch in philadelphia reported by phil. michael in haddon heights new jersey 1 inch, james in ocean city almost a half inch. in newark delaware john checks in at .7-inches of rain. many spots getting close to that 1 inch mark. check a couple other locations, glenmoore .56, .9 up in chalfont. pretty good rainfall amounts. a brief drying period and we'll talk about another storm for weather. you can become an eyewitness weather watcher. sign up now at cbsphilly.com/watchers. and check this out. a monster storm makes landfall in the philippines. this is typhoon hagaput. it's huge. maximum winds at 103 miles per

hour. hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated. the storm's expected to pound the island nation for days and it is tracking to the west. here's how it looks on satellite right now, still a healthy typhoon. it's basically equal to a category 2 hurricane as we have been talking about it but right over the island chain right now a lot of winter and rain over the next few days as it slowly tracks to the east and eventually it will weaken. back home we have our own rain we're dealing with. amounts from half inch to an inch. steady rains over i-95 from the baltimore washington area. there's the back edge starting to move through the poconos, parts of northern berks county and the lehigh valley but that rain continues into south jersey so another two, three hours or so and we'll see improving conditions from west to east overnight. temperatures are on the milder side tonight. general the in the 40's, upper 40's to near 50 near the engineers shore. mount pocono at 34 degrees. northerly wind is starting to overtake the region as the

cold front moves through. temperatures behind the front are in the 30's so it will be a chilly finish to the weekend. here's our wind speeds out of the north. that wind will continue to howl tomorrow, sustained 15 to 20 miles per hour, gusts 25 to near 30. it will be chilly. here's what's happening over the next few days. drying out briefly. cold front will move through tomorrow. enjoy the sunshine. chilly though. highs below average in the low 40's. watch this area of high pressure. thigh this is what keeps us dry. this will be key in our forecast. we have this system moving into the great lakes. that system drops down helping to energize a new coastal storm for tuesday, so looks like we see periods of rain moving in late monday night into tuesday. this looks like mainly a rain maker for the delaware valley. let's talk about a little bit close. i mentioned that high pressure area. that sits over new england so as the storm develops, doesn't really have anywhere to go. it's a slow moving system and in between these pressure areas you got strong winds coming in from the ocean so coastal flooding is likely from this storm system coming

in monday and tuesday and again really interior northeast and new england has the best slot to see snow. heavy rain possible and certainly windy during the day tuesday. tied at a flooding likely. snow for the interior northeast. possible poconos sees it. the exact strength and timing is uncertain. forecast will change over the next 24 to 48 hours. mainly an a rain event and wind from this system. rain ends through the delaware valley overnight, back to sunshine for sunday. monday it's dry. you'll notice the clouds starting to move in. and then it's tuesday we'll start to see that rain pushing in from the south. there's going to be pockets of heavier rain especially across eastern new jersey. maybe one, two, maybe even more than 2 to 3 inches of rain before the storm system moves out of here wednesday. temperatures again tomorrow chilly, 30's to low 40's, slightly cooler on monday with the clouds. some areas will be stuck into the 30's. so that rain does end overnight, turns breezy, 37 degrees for the low temperature.
