is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> hackers take aim at another big retailer and tonight customers at several stores learn they may have fallen victim, good evening, i'm jessica dean. >> and i'm chris may. tonight less than a week before christmas there is even nor -- more personal information at risk. live tonight our david spunt is at one of them on columbus boulevard in south philadelphia. david. >> reporter: chris, jessica, good evening many people are worried about this recent breach. as you mentioned this is one of those affected. if you shopped at one of the local stores and we'll tell you those stores in just a moment over the summer, you may want to check your bank statements. during the busy final few days of the holiday shopping season, news that almost 1.2 million credit and debit cards were hacked at staples stores across the country doesn't sit well with

shoppers. >> i just used my card. >> reporter: maureen mccloskey just loaded up on office supplies at this staples in northeast philadelphia. this store is one of 115 stores hit by criminals at different times between july and september. staples made the announcement late friday afternoon. many customers had no idea until we told them. >> it's really a big problem because people they put their trust in the companies, you know, not only staples butter everywhere else. >> reporter: staples isn't the only store with security breach issues. the chain joins a growing list and a growing number of holiday shoppers say i.d. theft is top of mind. >> it makes me very nervous to go to the store to go shopping. >> reporter: she's not alone but what can be done to stop these security breaches? >> unfortunately i think it's a problem that's here to stay. >> reporter: dr. robert davido is a professor and cyber crime expert at drexel university. he says the problem is

literally in the cards. >> we should be gradually moving over to a chip pin system. unfortunately it's not quick enough. >> reporter: the video says to get online as much as possible to check every transaction, find a problem, contact your bank right away. >> i work hard for my money. i don't want nobody else getting my money, you know. >> reporter: staples knew of a possible breach back in october but they found out and they actually made it public today that there has been a breach from july through september. chris. >> david, what do people need to do to find out if they've been affected by this? >> reporter: it's a great question. you mentioned there are a lot of stores in our area. they can go to cbsphilly.com find out where those stores are. if they're on that list what they need to do, they need to call their bank, most importantly check those bank statements and we're talking about a time frame from july through september. chris, jessica. >> david spunt for us in south philadelphia tonight. david, thank you. >> police file charges against a man who they say falsely

reported a sighting of suspected killer bradley stone. police say luke sanderling told them a man who looked like stone tried to carjack him. at that time stone was still on the run from police. investigate the now say sandernin made that story up. >> alerts were put out for a 5-mile radius. the y, hospital, central bucks west were shut down and put under lockdown and obviously a very substantial amount of public resources were deployed. >> police say stone killed six people in montgomery county, his ex-wife and five of her relatives before he was found dead in the woods in pennsburg. >> well, new at 10 o'clock tonight demonstrators return to the streets of philadelphia tonight but this time it was a show of support for police here and across the country. our natasha brown joins us live from mayfair to show us what happened in that

community tonight. natasha. >> reporter: well, the rally actually in mayfair lasted about an hour and a half or so. hundreds of folks came out to show their support not just for philadelphia police officers but officers from around the country. the blaring sound of car horns helped to fuel a spirited rally in northeast philadelphia. at least 250 people gathering to show support for philadelphia police officers. donald gary organized the event. >> having people, just regular, you know, i don't want to say nobodies but regular people that come out and tell the positive stories despite race, creed, anything like that and to share the stories. >> the support we get from the police is unbelievable. >> reporter: one by one residents gave testimonials about how police officers impacted their lives some letting their signs do the talking. >> i was going to make a

speech but i was afraid i would get too emotional. >> these police officers go out, kiss their families good by that time you don't know if they're coming home again. you got a lot of good ones and a lot of bad ones. >> all lives matter, all lives matter. >> reporter: this rally coming on the heels of rallies around the country protesting. also coming just hours after disturbing graffiti was discovered in west philadelphia about police officers. >> i want to thank all the police that are out there. >> reporter: this gathering and this one in port richmond also supporting officers like others came under the cloak of protection provide bide police. >> this community group just like any other protest and demonstration that is we've handled throughout the past month and a half or throughout the year at any point in time, everybody has the right to express themselves and their first amendment right of being out here this is no different.

>> reporter: police tell us there were no incidents of violence here. this was just a peaceful gathering and a chance for folks in this community to show appreciation for the men and women in blue who protect and serve their community. we're live in mayfair tonight, natasha brown, "eyewitness news" at 10:00 on the cw philly natasha thank you. there's new reaction tonight to this image posted on instagram by a philadelphia paramedic. it shows two black men pointing handguns as a man posing as a white police officer. i spoke to mayor michael nutter about this photo earlier today. >> it's offensive and, you know, as much as we believe in the support of free speech, i think it's also clear that there are limits to speech or expression of those kinds of actions. at any time that kind of posting would certainly be inappropriate as it relates to any of our police officers. >> the image is from a music

video made in protest of the deaths of michael brown and eric garner. that paramedic has apologized for posting the image. >> well, it's another cold night out there t "eyewitness news" on broad street in philadelphia where plenty of folks were bundled up on a friday night but still out and about. kate bilo joins us now with the first forecast. kate. >> thanks, chris. the good news is at least it's dry, we're not tracking any rain or snow for the coming weekend. you can see on storm scan3 everything looking pretty clear as we go through this friday night. a clear sky though does lead to cold conditions. the clouds not there to trap any of that escaping radiation as it moves off the earth's surface so without cloud cover you tend to get the coldest nights. a clear night like tonight temperatures already dropping. storm scan3 looks fine for now t let's take a look at how it feels outside. temperatures across the area in the 20's in some spots, wilmington at 28. millville 24 right now,

lancaster 29. we're still sitting at 34 degrees at the airport but it feels even colder. it's still brisk out there tonight. feels like 28 at the airport, 22 in wilmington and feels like 13 in mount pocono. so, let's take a look at your first forecast for saturday morning you'll wake up to a cold start, 7:00 a.m. 30 degrees, just a few clouds. bright and chilly at 9:00 a.m., 32. then we get up to 36 by 11:00 a.m. but, hey, at least it's dry. now your weather headlines, what we'll talk about coming up, turning wild and wet next week. your christmas out look. that's coming up chris and jessica. >> the search is on for two masked gunmen targeting hispanic convenience stores in a north philadelphia neighborhood. >> police released surveillance video from six of those robberies. we know nine shops have been hit in all since the middle of november. the suspects wear hoods. they've gotten away with cash and cigarettes, and in one of those robberies a store owner was pistol whipped if you can

identify these suspects you're asked to call police. a warning tonight from police in cherry hill about pick pockets. police there have released these surveillance photos, they're from four different incidents in which victims credit cards were later run up to the tune of $14,000. we know people were victimized at wegmans what ham ma breeze panera bread and the christmas tree shops. the first incidents occurred back on november 5th, the most recent on tuesday. >> and authorities want you to be extra cautious during your holiday shopping to becoming a a victim hold your purse close to your body. avoid using revolving doors and consolidate smaller purchases into one bigger bag so you can keep better track of everything. also never leave your purchases unattended and if you're shopping at night ask a security officer to walk you to your car. >> well, the fbi is now confirming that north korea is behind that cyber attack on

sony pictures. a group of hackers calling themselves guardians of peace broke into sony servers, published private e-mails and then threatened to attack moviegoers who were attending screenings of the nervy a film about the assassination on kim jong-un. the threat prompted sony to pull that movie this week. george clooney is slamming hollywood actors for not standing by sony. sony defended its decision even after president obama said they made a mistake. the president vowed the u.s. will respond proportionally to north korea's actions. >> a sunday surgeon in flu cases across america. >> now some are wondering if it was worth getting that shot. that story still ahead tonight. plus, it is reservation only at new york city first cat cafe. we'll be back with that and

>> breaking news. chopper three live over an accident in cherry hill camden county. this is at route 70 at haddonfield road. it appears two vehicles were involved in this. one of them ended up on the center median. right now no word on injuries. >> the olympic gold medalist michael phelps pleads got driving drunk but avoid jail

time. >> a judge sentenced him to a year and a half probation he had a blood alcohol nearly twice the legal limit. this was his second dui charge in 10 years. he entered a treatment program in october. >> on the health watch tonight, it appears the flu is gaining steam. this time last year flu was widespread and in only four states. now the cdc is tracking flu in 29 states across the country. twice as many states as last week. most in the south and midwest. the cdc says most cases are the h3n2 strain and that is not protected against by this year's vaccine. >> because the h3n2 is dominating, we probably will see more disease. >> health officials do recommend you still get the flu vaccine, though. it does protect against other strains and it can help minimize the symptoms if you were to get the h3n2 strain.

>> cat cafes are popular overseas and now they're starting to take off in the u.s. >> who would not love to be at a cat cafe, right? this one is called meow and it just opened in new york. new york city health code prohibits animals wherever food is prepared so this is kind of a byos, bring your own snack into the back reand then the cats hang out. you pay $4.50 per hour for feline affection. >> people come in here because they want a hug, they want a break from new york city lifestyle. >> you may doubt the cats. >> i'm not doubting anything. >> well, listen. these crowds at meow are so big you got to make a reservation. you can even adopt one of these cats at the cafe if you make a connection. that's a great thing. >> that could be a may christmas present for your family. >> never too early for that.

the delaware river waterfront will be buzzing with activity as we ring in 2015. >> three, two, one. [cheers and applause] >> fun to be part of some fireworks. i was thrilled to be at city hall with our general manager jon hitchcock today to unveil the new year's eve slept details for philadelphia and camden. we'll have two fireworks displays this year, one at 6:00 p.m. on new year's eve and then of course one at the stroke of midnight and you can watch the midnight show in its entirety live on cbs3. >> two outstanding fireworks shows at both 6:00 p.m. and midnight have become a new year's eve tradition for many families across this wonderful region. >> and the fun continues on new year's day with the philadelphia tradition, the mummers parade. they were on hand to help us celebrate. >> and it was a great day across the area for the kickoff of course and for our joy of sharing campaign.

we were outside all day in the sunshine. let's check in with our weather watchers. no more sun out there now and temperatures certainly dropping as soon as the sunset tonight temperatures started going downhill. right now we're reporting 29 degrees our weather watcher barbara lane, she's in willow grove, 29 with a clear sky there at the moment. we're seeing below freezing temperatures across the river in new jersey. hal in collingswood reporting 30 degrees. he has a question. where has the sun been? sometimes we're getting more sun in the afternoon and then seeing of course those gloomy starts to the day. we may see that again tomorrow. on. >> newark delaware, 28 degrees with a clear sky. if you would like to be a weather watcher, you can be featured in our newscast by becoming one of our eyewitness weather watchers. go to cbsphilly.com/watch stories sign up. let's take a look at what things are looking like outside. we'll take you to campbell's cam looking out over the ben franklin bridge on skycam3. a few clouds starting to move in.

the clouds moving back in will kind of help temperatures not get quite as cold overnight. on a clear night like tonight you could see temperatures drop back into the mid-20's easily. i think we'll bottom out about 29 degrees. not a whole lot going on on storm scan3. one thing to watch is a system along the gulf of mexico. this will stay to the south, just may bring cloud cover over the next few days. so temperatures right now 34 degrees at the airport. we're at 28 in wilmington. there's that cold 24 in millville and you'll wake up to temperatures only in the 20's early tomorrow morning. all across the region. maybe low 30's in dover and in wildwood but temperatures below freezing everywhere on saturday morning. so, 29 will be the low in the city tonight with just a few clouds. for your saturday, partly sunny, it's a chilly day, normal high is about 43. we'll only get to for the but not a bad day for the last weekend, last shopping weekend perhaps before christmas. let's take a look at your eagles football forecast. eagles traveling down to d.c. taking on the redskins saturday at 4:30 p.m. just a few clouds in the sky, it's

chilly at 38 degrees but all in all not so bad. what we're tracking is a system for next week. showers start to move in tuesday but it's christmas eve wednesday that this storm brings heavy rain and strong gusty winds to the area. it's warm enough that we are talking about just rain and the good news is on thursday christmas day that moves on out but the model here, that's what we're looking at soaking rain christmas eve, snow well inhappened and then blustery on christmas day and across the northeast your christmas day forecast not bad in philadelphia or d.c. but pittsburgh cleveland buffalo dealing with a wintry mix and some rain as you head up towards the scranton area, around 40 degrees. if you're planning travel best time to do it tomorrow through monday, sunny cool dry conditions. tuesday we'll give you the yellow light. but on wednesday that's when you want to try to avoid travel on christmas eve. get to your destination, heavy rain and wind. not as bad as snow and ice but still could cause problems for travelers. your eyewitness weather seven-day forecast, not bad
