>> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> widespread mourning in new york city after the murder of two police officers there and tonight we're learning more about the victims and the suspect. good evening everyone, i'm natasha brown. thank you so much for joining us. police are calling it an assassination. the officers never had the chance to pull their guns. his first victim was his ex-girlfriend who is still fighting for her life. cbs news correspondent wendy gillette has the latest developments. >> ♪ >> reporter: there were songs and prayers at a candlelight vigil sunday evening held at the intersection in brooklyn where two police officers were ambushed and killed saturday afternoon. >> reporter: local ministers

say those who are divided need to put aside their differences after months of protests against the police. >> we need to show the world that this is not who we are as a community. >> reporter: a memorial at the intersection continues to grow with many flowers can did he say and signs left behind. this is where 28-year-old ismaaiyl brinsley fired four shots at rafael ramos and wenjian liu before killing himself. police describe brinsley has a troubled man with a decade long criminal record who tried to commit suicide as recently as a year ago. hours before the shooting he posted on social media that he was going to put wings on pigs and referred to their deaths of eric garner and michael brown. >> i hope and pray that we can reflect on this tragic loss of life that has occurred so that we can move forward.

>> reporter: bunching is draped over the door of the police 60 where the officers worked and flags are flying at half-staff. wendy gillette, cbs news, brooklyn new york. >> the reaction to these murders is garnering nationwide reaction and attention. today philadelphia police commissioner charles ramsey weighed in. >> it wasn't like a high risk operation or something when you know that you're really putting your life at risk. just sitting in the car maybe just looking out of the window and then all of a sudden someone comes up and just murders you, that's enough to make you angry. it just doesn't make any sense at all. >> mayor michael nutter release add statement today saying in part "we americans must acknowledge that we have a clear problem with violence in our country. we must all commit to a pathway of nonviolence, citizens and police officers alike, as we participate in the civic life of our communities and nation ". well, now after more than three weeks, there is a clue

in the disappearance of shane montgomery. today authorities recovered his keys in the schuylkill river. they searched the river in manayunk for four and a half hours. that was the only piece of evidence they discovered. now, montgomery was last seen 25 days ago leaving kildare's bar on thanksgiving morning. surveillance video showed him later walking in the direction of the river. turning to our weather tonight, it was not a bad sunday in december. "eyewitness news" in camden here where one guy even broke out the fishing pole along the delaware. not a bad view, either. it was very pretty today. justin drabick has the first forecast. i was just glad to see the sun, justin. >> yeah, i think everybody was. that shot come new year's eve you'll be able to see the fireworks from that area. good place to check it out. also you can see it here on cbs3. our weather cold for this time of year, temperatures struggled to get to 40. we're at 34 degrees with clear skies in philadelphia, 29 wilmington, allentown down to

26 degrees. we're sitting at freezing in trenton, new jersey. look at some of the suburbs. 23 in quakertown this hour, 27 both in willow grove and doylestown, mid-20's in mount holly, new jersey. right now looking at mainly clear skies. there are a few clouds trying to move in from the east. there will be a weak storm system that tracks up the east coast. it will spread more clouds into the region tomorrow and we talk about rain chances returning. a cold start to your monday. dress warm. temperatures well below freezing, monday more clouds return. there could be a few light rain showers especially later on during the afternoon and at night. high temperature again only around 40 degrees. kind of the same deal at the shore. some afternoon showers and maybe even a few wet snowflakes mixed in with some of those showers. up in the poconos high temperatures that the 30's. coming up we talk about more rain chances as we head towards christmas eve. details in a few minutes. natasha. >> justin thanks.

what was first thought to be a random crime turns out to be anything but. chester county investigators say someone was targeted by someone she knew very well. this happened on iron lake drive in exton. "eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers is live in west whiteland township tonight. he's got the latest. >> reporter: police say they're continuing to look this evening for two suspects, the first leonard bernard who they say committed the robbery the second brianna mitchell who police say used to be the victim's in home caretaker. she didn't want to let him in but police say leonard bernard forced his way into a 76-year-old woman's home here in a quiet neighborhood in exton. >> he slapped her, before he left he pushed her to the ground. >> reporter: he tied her up e come to her door pretending to be with a home health service she used in the past.

>> go in there at 6:15 on a saturday night when it's the likelihood people are out. >> reporter: brazilian sen would be the word. >> reporter: he left and the victim called 911. police soon discovered bernard's girlfriend used to be a caretaker for the victim. >> we went in, there was nobody there but we went into the master bedroom and all laid out on the bed was all the victim's jewelry and everything. >> reporter: this neighborhood a bit on edge neighbors telling neighbors to be an alert. >> stay out on a watch that something like that happened, keep your doors locked, be aware, be cautious. >> reporter: and police say they actually spoke with the female suspect over the phone. they urged her to turn herself in but so far no luck. we're live in west whiteland township, matt rivers, "eyewitness news" at 10:00 on the cw philly thanks matt. flames consume two apartment buildings in delaware leaving one person dead, another injured and more

than three dozen homeless. costs to repair the damage could exceed 1 million do. "eyewitness news" reporter syma chowdhury has the story. >> i was like speechless. i was looking and crying. >> reporter: he lost everything he owned after a fatal fire ripped through this apartment building. the fire started around 2:30 sunday morning at the harbor house apartments in claymont. firefighters found one person dead in one of the units. another person was taken to christiana hospital. luckily for chowdhury he escaped the fire with his wife and 10 month old baby and only the clothes on their backs. >> i was looking from here. my apartment was burning. everything is burning. my tears came out as you already noticed. it is very tough. >> reporter: the two alarm fire started in one apartment on the third floor, spread to the attic and through to another building. firefighters arrived within minutes but were overwhelmed to see how quickly the flames

spread. firefighters were able to get the fire under control around 5:30. they stayed at the scene to put out hot spots that flared up. about 40 people are left homeless. the red cross is assisting 10 families in their time of need. >> it's amazing how resilient people are after a fire and these people will be resilient. >> reporter: for chowdhury it will be difficult to pick up the pieces especially with the holidays right around the corner. >> it's right before christmas. it's tough. tough to believe. >> reporter: the fire marshal is now investigating. so far no word on what caused this fire. in claymont, delaware, syma chowdhury, "eyewitness news" on the cw philly. >> a domestic dispute may have sparked a shooting at a bar in the northeast just after midnight a 23-year-old man suffered a graze wound to his arm while sitting inside mcgee's pub in holmesburg. 15 minutes after police arrived, authorities say a

>> welcome back. officers in winslow township new jersey take action to ensure two girls who lost their any other a violent crime earlier this year have a reason to smile this christmas. "eyewitness news" reporter steve matter son tells us why. >> (siren). >> reporter: instead of sleigh bells sirens, instead of rain degrees, motorcycles. instead of santa's helpers, santa's finest clad not in green or red but black and blue to a little girl and her family all the same because with them came christmas. >> merry christmas. >> reporter: sunday a parade of gifts to the front door little jessica and big sis maria. >> i don't know what to say. like it was really nice of them. it was a big deal. >> reporter: in late july, winslow township police respond to do a murder, its body of 41-year-old jennifer bonko discovered with more than 50 stab wounds.

her boyfriend kevin ambrose charged with the crime. 19-year-old maria and five year old jessica are her daughters. >> that situation was terrible >> reporter: lieutenant george smith decided this year santa's workshop is coming to jersey. >> all of us have children and we decided we needed to do something special. >> reporter: the township's police officers donated $1,800 for gifts. >> after everything that's like happened, like this is definitely going to help. >> reporter: many of the officers who came out sunday took the call and were on the job the night it came in so as therapeutic as this was the family it's therapeutic for a lot of these guys, too. >> a little bit of closure to be able to help this family and give back to them. >> reporter: even santa who moon lights as an officer on the squad says he's been countering on this day. >> after the year she's had, if this is something we can do to take her mind off something, that's amazing. >> reporter: a bright smile,

a big hug, mission accomplished. in winslow township, steve patterson, "eyewitness news" on the cw philly. >> very nice. you know, this year's holiday karen values also was so big organizers had to move it to the wells fargo center. nearly 2,000 kids in need were given free coats and other personalized gifts at the sixth annual event. just look at that pile of presents there. everybody got something. and if that wasn't enough there were plenty of games as well. meantime the white house now weighing in and weighing options on how to respond to the sony hacking scandal. officials blame north korea for the cyber attacks which exposed confidential information and caused the cancellation of the movie "the interview." now the white house is asking for beijing's help. it was a topic this morning on face the nation. >> i think it's important that that movie be played, that that movie be seen. i don't even know if it's a good movie but i think it is

now important that that happen, that we figure out a way to get that out there so americans can watch it. it is unacceptable that this attack not just on a country, not just on our constitutional freed if it's unresponded to, if it stays the way it is now it will be an incentive for others to try to do the exact same thing in the future. >> some politicians have called this an act of terrorism while while others label it as a new form of warfare. elton john and his partner david furnish are officially married. they tied the knot at a ceremony in london. the pair originally had a civil bond some years ago but a new law in england allows them to officially been married. >> okay, good sunday night everyone. hopefully you enjoyed the sunshine. temperatures were on the cold side. they're pretty chilly right now we check in with our weather watchers. cool numbers in some of the

suburbs. ocean city 33 degrees. riverside 26. temperature in glenmoore coming in at 24 degrees and peter in trenton a little bit milder checking in the mid 30's this hour and we have more clouds that will start to move in during the overnight hours. that may help level off those temperatures a little. if you love the weather and wants to be feature in your newscast sign up now at cbsphilly.com/watchers. all right, we'll take you outside from our studio here. looking at center city. mainly clear skies over philadelphia right now. it's just cold with temperatures hovering right around that freezing mark around the city. there's an area of low pressure developing across the carolinas, areas of rain showers. it's weak storm system. it will track northward over the next 24 hours or so bring something rain in our area later monday night into tuesday. it's mainly light rain. we'll watch this system drop out of the northern plains,

track into the great lakes and bring a steady terrain just in time for christmas eve so unfortunately that may impact travel plans just a little bit. tomorrow more clouds on the increase, temperatures still cool in the he lower 40's. here's that storm system tracking up the east coast maybe bringing light rain in here monday into tuesday. more likely just scattered showers tuesday afternoon. little milder as we get close to near 50 degrees. then we're going to watch the larger storm system move into the great lakes and then the it brings some steadier rain from the south on wednesday, christmas eve. there could be pockets of heavier rain. we'll get a warm front through here. temperatures well into the 50's, maybe even 60 degrees along with some breezy conditions. let's time things out for you. into monday afternoon, clouds start to move in from the south and east later on during the especially south and east of the city we could be dealing with light rain. off and on showers still possible tuesday. last minute shopping certainly need the rain jackets and umbrellas. here we go christmas eve, not the best conditions for

traveling around the midatlantic and northeast as that steadier rain starts to move in. that's pretty much off and on all day along with breezy conditions. tomorrow still giving it a green light even though there's an opportunity for a few showers later on during the day but overall the day looks okay. tuesday scattered showers around may slow things down a little bit but a red light certainly on wednesday with potential for heavy rain along with breezy conditions. temperatures tomorrow after a cold start will slowly rebound to around 40, maybe some lower 40's at best because more cloud cover moves in. but notice what happens on tuesday. we're back to near 50 for the city, well into the 50's across delaware and south jersey. so, certainly it will not feel like christmas as we head towards christmas eve. overnight it's cold, partly cloudy, a low of 28 degrees for center city. the suburbs much colder than that. tomorrow a mostly cloudy day. late in the day we could run into a few showers, high temperature near 40 degrees. let's talk about christmas eve, christmas: steady rain

christmas eve, possibly pockets of heavy rains at times. winds gusting near 30. christmas day we start to dry out, still breezy though. we go from 40 tomorrow to near 50 tuesday. still clouds around, some off and on showers tuesday. that steadier rain moves in on wednesday, christmas eve, with a high near 60 and then some sun returns. still breezy for thursday, christmas day itself but the temperatures still above average, in the low 50's and looks like as we head into next weekend still pretty mild for this time of year. sunshine returns friday and saturday. temperatures upper 40's to near 50. >> 60, though, wow. >> and rain. >> santa is going have to come in on a boat. >> going to have a big umbrella to keep mine safe and dry. >> there you go. >> lots of folks looking at that cowboys game today. >> i know. the eagles needed help. they were hoping that indy would beat cowboys to keep those playoff hopes alive?

have any chance to win the division. that didn't happen. and the cowboys taking care of business against indy. tony romo threw four touchdown passes, became the cowboys all time passing yards leader. dallas beat indy 42 to seven to win the nfc east for the first time in four years. okay. next sunday's games against the giants will be the final game of the season. yesterday the eagles had two more turnovers. they would lead the league in that category and codey parkey just two field goals and the birds committed 13 penalties 102 yards. three weeks ago the birds nine and three, top seed in the playoff. now they are the fourth team in the six team playoff era to start nine and three and then miss the playoffs. >> it's just frustrating. you know, three weeks ago you know, we were sitting pretty. now we need a lot of stuff to happen. we don't have nobody to blame

but ourselves. it's frustrating. >> former eagle desean jackson a big reason why the birds lost to the redskins. four catches for 126 yards, two of them led to washington touchdowns. after the game he said that the eagles were naive for using single coverage to defend him. he was asked if the eagles miss him. >> that's a question you have to ask them. as far as my exteammates, guys out there on the field i think a lot of those guys miss me. they tell me that during the game and still have good relationships with a lot of guys and they constantly telling me how much they miss me and they wish you a still here. but that's a decision they chose to make in the front office. i'm happy to be here in washington. >> oto beckham had two touchdowns as new york beat saint louis 37 to 27. well, the flyers continue their eight game woad trip in
