>> meanwhile, police departments across the nation are on high alert this morning after two new york city police officers are executed in a patrol car. >> as don champion reports, the killings have prompted police brass to continue to issue warnings, on how officers need to protect themselves. >> police officers stood by the public in brooklyn sunday to pay tribute to two officers who were ambushed. >> the assassination of members of our family involve communities. we all mourn together. >> forty year old rafael ramos, 32 year old wenjian liu were shot and killed as they sat in their cruisers saturday. the gunman, 28 years old ismaaiyl brinsley took his own life. moment of silence was held for officers at madison square garden as the new york rangers carolina hurricanes game. seven year veteran, wenjian liu, married seven month. and he joined years ago. >> he loved his wife, dedicated father.

and i wish i could be half the man my cousin was. >> hours before the shooting here investigators say brinsley shot and wounded his ex-girlfriend, at maryland, they also say he posted threats of social media, against police, in retaliation for the deaths of eric garner and michael brown. the shooting happened a mid growing outrage over police brutality. >> today is about changing the system. >> this weekend hundreds marched in philadelphia while other shutdown street in downtown cleveland. and in the wake of this weekend shooting, officers in new york city had been advised to work in pairs, for their safety. don champion, "eyewitness news" on the "cw philly". >> philadelphia police commissioner charles ramsey also the co-chairman of president obama task force on policing, he was on cbs this morning, to discuss the killing of two officers, in new york, over the weekend, but he also commented, on the tension right now between the police department and the city's mayor, bill diblasio.

>> i think right now everyone should focus on the families of the two slain officers, put them away with the dignity and respect that they certainly deserve. the rest of this could be sorted out at a later time. but right now everyone needs to lower the volume a little bit on the rhetoric, because we are just at very, very volatile environment right now. i talk to commissioner brad on, couple of times yesterday. he is one of the best police leaders in america. and he will guide his department through this. >> as you just heard don champion mention, hundreds took the street of philadelphia, calling for racial equality in the u.s. the black-out philly march started at 15th and arch streets, circled around city hall, continued down to the art museum steps. group rallied there before stage willing four and a half minute die-in. police say last night's protests remained peaceful. it is 8:02. time to get a check of traffic and weather. good morning, carol. >> good morning, diane a everybody, hello. looking at some clouds rolling

into the picture right now, but it is dry right now. so, you can see, on storm scan3, that we've got not much going on, except for the rain to the south, that is not content to stay there. it is going to be moving to the north, so couple of rain showers cannot be ruled out as we move on through the afternoon, but at this point the rain isn't even in maryland, but on the way up through delaware, first, and then south jersey. 32 degrees in philadelphia, 34 trenton, 27 in the poconos, 28 degrees down in wildwood. our day will be warming up like this, warming up just temperature wise, really doesn't get warm at 40 degrees, with the showers and the increasing number of clouds that we will be finding out there. also, note, if you are going to be traveling through the poconos, there is a freezing rain advisory from 6:00 tonight until 4:00 in the morning. dangerous travel though. you could be finding trace of ice. just be careful. after 4:00 in the morning, should be warming up there, changing over to all rain. and as we put this into motion, notice we start to see some of the showers coming in. not everywhere all the time. but they are out there. you may be finding a need for

your umbrella, not just today and this afternoon and tonight and tomorrow, but increasingly as we go through wednesday. with the heaviest rain wednesday. otherwise expect temperatures today 40, philly, 44 at the shore, 38 in the mountains. let's check on these roads right now with jessica. >> thank you, carol. good morning, 8:04, we go outside, check how things are doing on the schuylkill expressway. at city avenue, not doing too good actually. westbound into the king of prussia area, where you will see most of that back up. 422, around trooper road, the eastbound delay there, as well, headed into king of prussia. been that way for quite some time, westbound lanes moving along just fine, now, over for septa's route 13 trolley, they are dealing with some wires pro -- wire problems, shuttle bussing mount moriah up into yeadon. out in new jersey an accident pushed over into the shoulder on 295 southbound at route 42. another accident out in west philly chestnut street at 56 street. and out in bucks county crash

janet avenue at bristol pike. just be aware that far for clean up. otherwise the rest of the major doing awesome actually this entire morning, not much delays to speak of on 202 northbound about 13 minute trip, schuylkill expressway, eastbound, from the blue route into the vine, only about 18 minutes, nice and clear, erika, back over to you. >> new this morning, main line 7-eleven clerk roughed up during overnight robbery. it happened just after midnight on the 5300 block of city avenue. investigators tell us, that two men walk in, demanding cash. one of the suspect had a gun. those suspect got away with cash, lottery tickets, cigarettes. the store cashier was taken to the hospital for a back injury after being pushed against a wall by one of those robbers. >> fire investigators in delaware are working to find the cause of two apartment fires that left dozens of people homeless this morning. >> "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo joins us now in wilmington where six families were displaced in very cold december night. jan, good morning.

>> reporter: good morning, six families displaced that's dozen people, as you mention, on very cold night, here we are coming to you live in wilmington. where this fire just absolutely ripped through this apartment complex, you can see, straight through some of it at those units, and even with all of this destruction, hard to imagine this isn't even the most serious of the fires that happened here in new castle county, delaware yesterday. yes, three people were injured, in this fire, minor injuries, taken to the hospital, and 12 people are displaced, but over in claymont, one person was killed. >> two fires in new castle county sunday, one person dead, dozen homeless, bows fast moving fires, leaving only a shadow of what once was behind. >> i was looking from here, my apartment was burning, everything is burning, my tears came out, it is very tough. >> he and close to 40 others displays from the their homes here at the harbor house apartments in claymont. this fire started around 2:30 sunday morning in a third floor apartment. by the time fire crews arrived, the billing was

engulfed in flame. >> we definitely are behind the eight ball before we even got on location. >> took crews three hours to control the fire. one person was found dead inside after apartment. a 72 year old man had to be rescued and taken to the hospital. later sunday night, around 9:00, another fire. this time, at the apartments on butter nut court in wilmington. this fire sent three people to the hospital for minor injuries, including paramedic and firefighter. and here, 12 people are now displaced. >> amazing how resilient people are after a fire. and these people will be resilient. >> but it is a determination many are finding hard to muster, the law, so much harder to take, this close to the holidays. >> it is tough. tough to believe. >> and back out here live in wilmington, this morning, you can see some of the neighbors are assessing the damage here, some of their neighbors are without a home. twelve people displaced in all, in this neighborhood, and dozens over in claymont, now,

again, fire investigators trying to determine the cause this morning, and we're told by investigators that the damage here will likely exceed $1 million. reporting live in wilmington, jan carabeo, "eyewitness news" on the "cw philly". >> just devastating, thank you, jan. police finds new evidence in the case of missing west chester university student, shane montgomery. a new jersey dive team a significance the search found his keys in the schuylkill river yesterday after searching for hours. the 21 year old was last seen 25 days ago, leaving kill dare's irish pub early thanksgiving morning. surveillance video later showed him walking in the direction of the river. dive teams are expected to resume their search next weekend. >> and investigators in chester county say the elderly victim after home invasion was targeted by someone she new. police say leonard bernard forced his way into the 76 year old victim's house in exton. tide her up, and stole about $10,000 worth of jewelry from the home. according to investigators, he is the boyfriend of the

victim's former caretaker, brianna mitchell. investigators are now searching for both suspects. only two blocks from police stations, couple shopping centers, busy time of the year, you know, all of the cars in the area. and they go in there at 6:15, you know, on saturday night, you know, likelihood there are people out, ya, they go in there, brazen would be the word. >> authorities say both suspect will now face kidnapping, burglary, and other related charges, anyone with information on their whereabouts is asked to call police. north korea is now threatening the white house, the pentagon and the whole us mainland over us claims the nation is behind sony's cyber attack. president obama is wig whether to put north korea back on the list of countries that sponsor terrorism. >> the sweeping cyber assault on sony pictures was the most devastating sign erray tack ever on an us business. but, in a interview broadcast sunday, president obama said it was not an act of war.

seeing some showers little bit later on this afternoon. temperatures warming up, now, we've hit the three, starting the numbers, which is good. we should be four, high temperature of 40 degrees. but, it is a keel start. and then, we put this into mowing, we bring some of these showers in, this is look at 5:00 o'clock, notice, it is still dry in a lot of locations. and it is not every place scattered around overnight, as well, they're scattered around here on tuesday, and then on wednesday, after a little lull on tuesday, we start to fill in with other amounts every rain, and maybe the heaviest rain will be coming on christmas eve. half to un 1 inch every rain, look at the temperatures christmas eve, 06 degrees. so every single day we go up by 10 degrees. today 40 degrees, tomorrow, ooh degrees, with some scattered showers, wednesday, 60 with some heavy rain possible, and thursday, should look fine, santa can put on his short sleeves for this one, jessica? >> wear shorts and boots, it

staying out of the bakery aisle. >> study in the journal, found that pre packaged baked goods, those sales dropped by 24% in recent years. doctors say shoppers can still make more changes, though, to avoid the empty calories, sugar and saturated fats. >> doctors say setting cardiac death is the leading cause of death in young people playing sports. researchers want to change that. they are recommending nationwide standards in health exams for young athletes. a study in pediatrics says all young athletes should go through a comprehensive physical for heart conditions and other health risks before taking the field. >> and depression in mothers could affect their child's behavior later in life as a teen. a study in the journal pediatrics looked at 2900 moms and children in canada. researchers found a mother's depression when her child was between six and ten years old could actually increase the child's risk for smoking and drug and alcohol use as an ad less end. >> that's so interesting.

good morning, it is 8: 25, this monday morning, i'm diana rocco. new this morning a 711 robbed on the main line, happened midnight 5900 block every city avenue. investigators tell us two men walk in and demanded cash. one of the robbers had a gun. we're told they got a which with cash, lottery tickets, and cigarette. the store cashier was taken to the hospital for a back injury after getting pushed up against a wall by one of the robbers. now right to carol for a look at the forecast, good morning. >> good morning to you, high shall everybody. we have blue skies over philadelphia. they won't last long, so get out, enjoy them if you can. but you can see it looks like a nice bright start here. not as bright every place else. storm scan3, showing that there are clouds and number of locations and precipitation moving in from the south. it is going to be rain in our

area, so we can expect to find some scattered rain showers, possibly, as we move on through the later afternoon and evening time periods. temperatures into the freezing mark now, 32 degrees, warm up for us, 32 out at the airport in philadelphia, 34 trenton, 30 degrees in wilmington, on our way this afternoon to 40 degrees now remember, weaver the rain showers, could be seeing them against this evening, tomorrow, 50 degrees with rain showers scattered around, and wednesday, 60 degrees, and just even then some rain showers, maybe heavy rain about. >> believe it will be little warmer though, good morning, everybody, starting to pack in little bit of volume out on 59 around girard, the southbound delay here, headed toward the center city area. northbound lanes moving just fine, though, so far. few accidents to talk about, one in jersey here on 295 southbound route 42, one out in bucks county, stoney hill road, and septa dealing with shuttle bussing from mount morae an into yeadon on the route 13 trolley. diana being back to you.

coming up in just a few minute with traffic and weather together. >> one person dead, dozen left to pick up the pieces as fames tear through two delaware apartment complex. >> jan carabeo live at the scene everyone every those fires in wilmington where several families lost everything right before the holidays. good morning, jan. >> good morning, terrible story to report. two serious fires here in new castle county delaware just yesterday, only miles from each other, hours removed from one another, coming to you live from the wilmington fire, where you can see all every these units are completely burned out, many people have lost everything threw injured, two displaced, not even the motion serious fire happened yesterday. over in claymont, close to 40 people now homeless. that fire was also deadly. now, this is the scene in claymont, early sunday morning, the fire breaking out there, around 2:30 a.m.

>> we're told the fire started third floor, quickly spread, took firefighters there three hours to contain the flames. they found one person dead, inside after apartment, a 72 year old man was also rescued and taken to the hospital. and on top of that, 17 amounts were badly damaged, leaving 40 people without a home. >> here at this apartment complex on butter nut court wilmington there was another fire, this one, sent three people to the hospital, for minor injuries, and including a paramedic and a firefighter, and here 12 people had been displaced, their homes badly damaged and just days before christmas. take a listen. >> i was like speechless, like working and crying.

there, to the south and moving this this direction. later on this afternoon, areas to the south, maybe picking up some of these showers before anybody else does. and again, scattered around this afternoon, and this evening. then we get more scattered showers around here tomorrow. they are rain showers. though, and heavy rain is possible for us by the time we get to christmas eve. thirty-two in philadelphia and allentown, 30 millville, the temperatures get little bit warmer, looking for high temperature this afternoon of 40 degrees. with a late afternoon shower, expected in the philadelphia area in the the temperatures, 40, 50, 06, too bad we can't keep the trends going for christmas day, but instead start to cool down. still not cool on christmas, temperature wise, 52 degrees, but it will be breezy, chance of showers heavier rain, christmas eve. >> very, very good for me, weather and traffic go hand in

hands. today having good day with awful us, on the ben franklin bridge, starting to sewer little bit of volume, been relatively quiet morning though so far all lanes open, no real problems, there just little bit of slow going. from 422 at 29, starting to lighten up just little bit eastbound lanes headed toward trooper road. in new jersey, just accident on 295 southbound, around route 42, and in bucks county, stoney hill road, crash there. now, mount moriah into yeadon due to wire problems, no problems at the philadelphia international airport, so far, slow going little bit on the schuylkill expressway, westbound from the vine st. expressway into the blue route. that will will take you about 21 minutes. twenty-two minutes southbound from woodhaven into the vine street expressway. >> investigators are scrutinizing social media posts after a gunman pulled off an execution-style killing of two new york city police

officers. >> emerging details that suggest suspected killer supply had mental health issues. >> thirteen year old son every ramos said it is horrible somebody gets shot dead just for being a police officer. everyone says they hate cops but they are the people that they call for help. >> every day you see them with the signs, every day, place basketball at the park, so close. unbelievable how close they were. >> even as people gathered for a vigil, investigators scrutinize the man they say killed officer ramos and officer wenjian liu saturday. ismaaiyl brinsley had a long krill that the records. police say his estranged mother expressed fear of him, saying he may have had undiagnosed mental issues. investigators are looking into what brinsley wrote on social media, including references to michael brown, area i can --

killings of the two new york police officers. daughters of a murder victim, officials surprised officers, rather, surprised five year old jessica and her big sister maria with a parade of gift sunday. back in july, police found the body of jennifer, the victim after brutal murder. officers wanted to help the girls so they raised almost $18,000 for gift. >> all of us a children. we decided we need to do something special for this family. >> after everything that happened, like this is definitely going to help. >> the year she's had, if this is something we can do to take her mind off of something, that's amazing. >> many of the same officers on hand for the celebration also responded to the scene of the crime over the summer. they say they all wanted this christmas to see smiles on the girls' faces. happening today, a tribute to fallen philadelphia fire lieutenant joyce craig. a motorcycle ride and moment of silence will be held

tonight for craig. she was the first female firefighter in philadelphia to die in the line every duty while battling a basement fire in west oaklane. tonight's ride start at 6:30, hope depo, roosevelt boulevard. they'll ride past craig's home end at her firehouse for moment of silence. christmas comes early to an australian man, rescued by santa claus. a firefighter dress in the red had been passing out candy to children when he and his colleagues notice add house on fire. the fireman helped drag the unconscious man from this smoke filled home. he saved the man's life by performing cpr outside as you can see in the individual joe just right place, right time. how about that? >> right now 8:38. retail remembers hoping for some big sales to drive up profits. we have a look at holiday shopping, just, what, two days, three days before christmas? >> don't want to think about it,. >> plus wedding bells for sir elton john. more on how he is sharing the news of his big day, with the world. >> and, have wrench, will travel.
