>> ♪ >> we begin tonight with breaking news out of olney where part of a two-family home has collapsed. this is video just in from the 100 block of roosevelt boulevard. police tell us eight people were inside at the time. everyone is now out of that home. we know two people are being taken to the hospital. our crew has just arrived at the scene and is getting more information. we'll of course continue to stay on top of this story and bring you any updates as we get them. also tonight a most unusual christmas eve. warm, wet and foggy all across the area. a hazy view of city hall as the area is hit with an uncommon type of holiday storm. a live look now at storm scan3 showing a lull in the action but we've got our eye on more wet weather. good evening to you, i'm jessica dean. chris may is off tonight. we have team three coverage of this holiday storm. justin finch is tracking how it's affecting travel but we'll begin with meteorologist kate bilo who joins us from the cbs3 weather center.

>> thank you jessica. take a look at the storm as we showed you. you can see we're in a little bitter of a break in the action. we have a couple showers over south jersey and into delaware but another batch of rain is brewing off to the west. you can see some pretty steady rain there over portions of western pennsylvania. this will eventually get here. the snow with this system well off to the north and west over michigan and temperatures are very, very warm. right now it's 63 degrees at the cbs broadcast center. as we zoom in you can see a thin line of light showers extending from portions of the northeast down through portions of cumberland county and into scent county delaware, down around dover a couple of showers at the moment. that's about all we've got. visibilities have gotten better but notice still pockets of dense fog. visibility down to a half mile in atlantic city, .3 in mount pocono, better in the city but we are going to be dealing with the fog at least until the frontal passage not until early tomorrow morning. if you're going to be out and about on the roads you want to watch for that dense fog. again some spots, atlantic city, mount pocono a half mile or less. slow down, low beams.

after this show we'll see the fog start to disperse but we're still seeing pockets of it as i just showed you. 3:00 a.m. there's that next batch of rain starts to move through even a rumble of thunder or its reindeer on the roof. you never know what that could be but can't rule out that rumble of thunder. clears by sen a.m. and then sunshine through your christmas day. much nicer weather as temperatures begin to drop. we're near a record right now. i'll have more on the warmth and how long it sticks around coming up with the seven-day forecast. jess today, back over to you. >> kate, thanks. the holiday storms snarled and delayed travel plans for millions of people around the country. we experienced some of the longest delays at philadelphia international airport. "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch is live there tonight with the latest. justin. >> reporter: jessica, flight aware.com is reporting there were some 40 cancellations here at phl, 253 delays. those delays here went into the two-hour zone. that's changed considerably now, though.

flights are coming in on time, some on coming in early. same for departures. no doubt today rain soaked travel plans across the country. the airport arrivals gate long and sometimes lively hugs, warm and welcomes in to christmas eve travelers like hasim. she her husband and her triplets flew from sacramento by way of washington, d.c. where fog and rain led to an hour long layover. >> we expect things are going to be a little crazy. it's the holiday season but it was fine. >> reporter: in all smooth travels at 30th street station but there were weather related train delays. some longer than an hour. >> weather doesn't seem a lot like christmas but we're excited to be traveling. >> reporter: so, no snow this year but lots of rain and mild temperature. the kind of forecast some say is more fitting somewhere else. >> it's too warm. feels like we're in florida right now.

broke into their home and stole their christmas gifts. tredyffrin police are hunting for the burglars in paoli. david spunt tells me in one case man is missing more than a present. >> 40 some years you don't expect an old house like this to be robbed. >> reporter: but paul and his wife barbara say they woke up wednesday morning to find most of their christmas gifts gone. >> i saw that a lot of the gifts were missing. there wasn't anything there. the zimmers live in this quiet paoli neighborhood but found out quickly one or several thieves picked this lock on their back door and made it into the house in the middle of the night. >> we looked down towards the woods and there was a pile of goods down there. we realized something was amiss. >> reporter: zimmer says the thieves left some of her christmas gifts including clothes in this alley behind her house. the more expensive gifts gone. >> they knew the jewelry boxes because even though they were wrapped, they took all the

jewelry, the watches and earrings and that sort of thing. >> reporter: paul and barbara zimmer are understandably upset but they tell me they really feel for one of their neighbors. someone who lost something bigger than a few presents, his 2008bmw. >> took all the presents, got into my car and took my car. >> reporter: david scouted lives in the same neighborhood. he also locked all of his doors but said thieves were able to open one of his windows. most of his kids' christmas gifts are also gone. >> for the people that stole them, i would have given the presents to them if they were that desperate for it, you know. not gidget both the suddenners and zimmers tell "eyewitness news" they're glad they're safe but both families are still mad about what happened. >> i feel violated because not only our privacy was infringed upon but you spent a lot of time picking out gifts and wrapping them. >> reporter: in paoli, david spunt, "eyewitness news" on the cw philly.

>> and it's a 2008 black bmw with pennsylvania plates rhr478. if you have any information call police. new tonight a camden county home burns on christmas eve. flames broke out at the house at 103 estates road in pine hill shortly before 7 o'clock tonight. the family wasn't home at the time but they did lose their dog in that fire. it was called in by an ems worker who says he was finishing a call when he saw the flames and called 911. >> started to knock on the today. an officer came and knocked down the back door. i feel sorry, christmas eve, christmas tomorrow, you know. >> cause of that fire is now under investigation. no injuries were reported. four people are hurt after an suv slams into the lobby of a nursing home in new castle county. this happened at the coax bury village nursing home in hockessin. an 89-year-old man is in

critical condition after being pinned against the wall of a building there. three others suffered minor injuries. we don't know yet what caused that crash. the search is on tonight for a driver who hit and killed a woman in northeast philadelphia and then drove away. police say theresa pozzi was hit by a truck as she tried to cross state road in holmesburg. well, tonight her family had a message for the people who tried to help the 33-year-old and also for the person who hit her. >> women or men whoever were there, to not leave her alone, thank you. for the person who knew they clearly hit her, are you heartless. you are cruel. and god will make his way to you whoever you are. >> investigators are looking at surveillance cameras in that area to help them find the truck. they describe it as a late 80's, early 90's dark colored pickup or tow truck. it's missing a health.

anyone with information should call 911. developing now, officials at the cdc say a lab technician is now being monitored for possible exposure to the ebola virus. officials say the person was working in a secure laboratory in atlanta and may have come into contact with a small amount of live virus that was part of an ebola experiment. that person will be monitored for 21 days. now playing, "the interview." the controversial film is now available on demand and will be in some theaters tomorrow. the film that throwed a cyber attack of sony will open at the penn cinema riverfront in wilmington tomorrow. that's the only local theater showing it. sony originally pulled the movie about a plot to assassinate north korea's leader after getting terror threats from the cyber attackers. after receiving criticism from president obama and others sony changed its mind. >> it became really not a good move for sony to look as if

>> ♪ >> dozens of philadelphia's faithful gathered tonight for a christmas eve mass at the cathedral basilica saint peter and paul on race streets. in about two hours the basilica will host a midnight mass and christmas day masses throughout tomorrow. a montgomery county hair salon is helping this holiday season by giving free hair makeovers to dozens of women. for them it's part of an annual christmas eve charity tradition. cherry greg of our sister station kyw news radio has

this story. >> reporter: they stood on their feet, snipping, drying and curling for hours. >> they come in one way and they go out smiling. >> reporter: these ladies are part of a group of stylists from exquisite hair design in wyncote who crafted hair do's and gave hair tips to 50 women from four local shelters all from free. >> just the pleasure of seeing ladies, strong and strengthened and encouraged and it changes them. >> they're very gentle and they're very kind, you know. >> reporter: wanda jackson says the hair makeover changed her. >> i'm in shelter and i have nothing, you know, and somebody's doing my hair. it's like -- i thank god this is a gift. >> reporter: in addition to new hairdos, all the ladies received these century 21 gift bags with lotion and all sorts of other goodies but that's not all. the stylist brought in gently used clothes and they cooked lunch too. >> go get a plate of that

potato salad because it's popping. >> reporter: and the effect of the day, smiles, dancing and gratitude. >> they're blessings and i'm real appreciated, real appreciated. >> it means just beauty. it means beauty to me. >> reporter: in wyncote, cherry greg, kyw news radio for "eyewitness news" on the cw philly. >> what a great story that is on this christmas eve. well, merry christmas to those of you celebrating. let's check in with our weather watchers and see what we've got going on. almost looks like we fast forward into april with these temperatures. looking at 60 degrees from our weather watcher bud in collegeville reporting 60 there. he says clouds and rain, rain and more rain bah humbug. it could be worse. it could be snow. it could be 40 degrees and raining so we'll take 60. at least that feels pretty nice. checking in with chris in berwyn 59 degrees mostly cloudy conditions there and he says wet warm and cloudy, bad travel weather for santa.

our area, we're not seeing any signals on our doppler radar or norad, anything like that. everything is pretty quiet for now but we'll continue to sweep the area and look for santa and if we get any word that he's in our vicinity i'll let you know immediately. in the meantime what we are tracking on storm scan3 is some rain still moving through the earn you can see pretty steady showers right now have developed once again from portions of ocean county, new jersey, right down into delaware. we're sweeping not seeing much right now to the west but another batch will move through and look at these temperatures. 62 at the airport. 62 in trenton. we've gotten to 63 so far today. we've still got a couple hours to get to that record which is 64 set back in 1990. temperatures are actually rising as that front approaches our area. the front will move through during the overnight and early morning hours. another batch of steady rain expected around 4:00 a.m. then it starts to move out and skies will clear for your christmas day. it will be a little better out there with temperature in the 50 and wind gusts though just 35 miles per hour.

turning around down the chimney saint nicholas came with a bound. he was dressed fall fur from his head to his foot and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. a bundle of toys he had flung on his back and he looked like a peddler just opening his pack. his eyes how they twinkled, his dimples how merry, his cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry. his droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow and the beard of his chin was as white as the snow. the stump of a pipe like whiteys he held tight in his teeth and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. he had a brought face and a little rounds belly that shook when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly. he was club bee and plump a jolly old elf. i laughed when i saw him in

spite of my myself. a wink of his eye soon made me know i had nothing to dread. he spoke not a word and went straight to his work. then filled all nine stockings and turned with a jerk. laying his finger aside his nose and giving a nod up the chimney he rose. he sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle and away they all flew like the down of a thistle but i heard him explain as he drove out of sight, merry christmas to all and to all a good night
