>> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> christmas in philadelphia. people in the city and all over the area celebrated the holiday and tonight at 10:00 we're taking a look at the traditions and the festivities. good evening, i'm jessica dean. with the holiday drawing to a close the high temperatures we enjoyed tonight are beginning to fall. meteorologist kate bilo here now. kate, what can can people expect. >> you'll definitely want the coat if you stepped outside you know it feels colder than last night. last night we left after the 11 o'clock news and it almost felt like a spring or summer

night out there. temperatures were in the 60's. felt almost tropical, at least for late december. but no more of that. storm scan3 completely clear at the moment. not tracking any precipitation in our area. the front that came through yesterday is way out to sea and high pressure taking over and it will be in control at least through late saturday night before our next cold front arrives by sunday. so, temperatures right now again they are starting to drop. we're seeing a few 30's lancaster namely at 37, mount pocono 36 but it's still 45 in philadelphia. keep in mind our normal high this time of the year is lower than that, it's around 43. still above average and not feeling all that bad for late december tonight. winds are westerly about five to 10 miles per hour but 14 miles per hour winds in philadelphia. not as windy overnight as it was earlier today. the very blustery day. take a look at these wind gusts. 42 miles per hour in atlantic city, 40 miles per hour in mount pocono and at the airport here in philly and allentown 39 miles per hour wind, wilmington 37.

the wind dies down but the sun sticks around. the rest of your holiday weekend forecast in a bit. >> kate, thanks. we know there is no shortage of things to do in philadelphia even on christmas night. plenty of people were out and about tonight including our diana rocco. >> merry christmas, everybody. >> reporter: presents have been opened and christmas dinners have been eaten. we found lots of skaters rocking the christmas carols on center city ice rinks as they worked off those big holiday meals. >> we just came over to visit our aunt. >> reporter: how is the ice skating? >> really good. >> we're here from florida so we're ice skating in philadelphia having a nice christmas definitely. >> celebrate hanukkah so it's a great thing for us to do on christmas. >> reporter: karen freeman came in from voorhees, new jersey. she and her boys were one of many families enjoying a light out in center city. >> we'll have food after this and more family time, right

boys. >> we went to frankford park to see the light show there. >> reporter: christmas night on walnut street was quiet with many stores taking a breather. sarafina was one of few restaurants opened for dinner. >> we have a phenomenal turnout. a lot of people do a late afternoon movie but we've had people all day long enjoying themselves and the holiday. >> reporter: in chinatown streets are buzzing and restaurants crowded. many say it's a christmas tradition. >> we seem to always come to china town for christmas because it's always opened and vibrant and we celebrate hanukkah. we need to find a place to eat and we'll see a movie. >> reporter: the theaters are busy and so is the wells fargo center for the opening night of the popular frozen on ice. wall street may be quiet christmas evening. stores are getting ready for what's sure to be a busy friday, people spending those christmas gift cards and making returns. in center city, i'm diana rocco for "eyewitness news" on the cw philly well, you could

call this a christmas miracle. an expectant mother goes into labor on a septa train and a few nearby officers are in the right place at the right time. this happened as the train was pulling into the station at 15th and mark. the officers got the call and without hesitation sprung into action and when he was all over mom gave birth to a brand new baby boy. >> we were just there doing what we do, you know. we were just there to help people in any kind of way, shape or form that comes. >> we delivered a baby for her. it's like her christmas presenter and it's a blessing for myself. it's the first time i experienced something like this. >> pretty special. we're told the mom and baby were taken to hahnemann hospital to get checked out. "eyewitness news" at the philadelphia veterans health where homeless vets got a hot dinner plus companies today. hundreds of coats and blankets were also collector for a clothing drive.

>> brings back the memories of being in the service and the camaraderie. it's like being in a familiar. it's wonderful. extended family for me. >> reporter: organizers predict more than 100 veterans were served at today's event. a few philadelphia animal shelters also spread holiday clear to some of their four legged friends. dogs and cats at the save me animal shelter in northern liberties were treated to a home cooked meal and got to play with toys donated. the animal care and control team of philadelphia also keeps their doors opened even on the holidays just in case anyone wants to take home a new family member. >> a lot of times because we make it a family event we have a big open house where people can make treats, can come together, have a tour of the shelter. >> if you're thing about adopting a pet know both shelters will be opened again tomorrow morning. after a lost debate over the sony hacking scandal the movie "the interview" is being

shown in a few select theaters. justin finch was there. >> reporter: crowds leaving the 1:00 p.m. showing of the interview in wilmington's penn cinema though for some the comedy didn't need to be oscar worthy for them to turn out. >> 72 my mother would call that definitely a b movie. >> i think i am more -- the idea the country could try to stop america from putting a movie out. >> reporter: federal officials say that was the motive for north korean hackers who are upset kim jong-un is the target of a assassination plot led by cia intelligence. in retaliation real life hackers went after sony pictures the company behind the film leaking sensitive data like staffers private e-mails. also threats of violence at theaters showing the movie. >> not take it too seriously then it should be fine and we

[laughter] >> reporter: "the interview" is also live on line to rent or buy and this movie goer says he'll be watching it again saying the crude comedy also has a sophisticated side. >> it shows the perspective from the side of north korea, from what their people see, versus what we actually see. it shows the difference between propaganda and how we perceive it and how they portray it. >> reporter: and after talks with sony penn cinema says it decided to run "the interview" but with extra security provided by wilmington police. staffers say their first showing was so strong it nearly sold out n wilmington, i'm justin finch, "eyewitness news" on the cw philly moviegoers turned out in the big apple to see "the interview" today as people flocked to the theaters sony ceo michael linton thanked everyone who supported the embattled studio. >> it has been a long and

'cause i like the presents and we all have lots of fun getting ready for dinner. >> reporter: cumens has been living in the allentown area since she was born, birthday number 106 just around the corner. >> she's lived a long happy, happy life with lots of good family. >> reporter: and good memories. spanning more than a century. >> she loves christmas. she loves to sing.

what she doesn't remember she makes up. on the afghanistan mission today. the commander-in-chief told americans the thank the troops. >> we're able to gather with family and friends because our troops are willing to hug theirs goodbye and step forward to serve. after a long day we can come home because they're willing to leave their families and deploy. >> the president said the combat mission in afghanistan was coming to a "responsible end." former president george h.w. bush remains in a houston hospital tonight. he was admitted tuesday after experiencing shortness of breath. a family spokesperson says the 90-year-old is feeling much better. bush is the eldest living former president and suffers from a form of parkinson's disease. >> thousands of onlookers turned out for the reenactment of the crossing of the delaware today. "eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers was there. >> reporter: presents followed by patriotism. >> ♪

>> reporter: that the order of events for most who showed up at washington crossing park to watch its namesake general george cross the delaware. >> it's a great day to be here and it's a great crowd and the events look amazing. >> reporter: shouse showed up early lined up on ropes opposite those men and women partying like it's 1776. the crowd was bigger than last year say organizers. why? start with the temperature. >> it's a lot warmer. >> reporter: so with rousing words from the general. >> i pledge to you that i and your officers will not leave you. >> reporter: the members of the army boarded the boats like they did 238 years ago. one by one they shoved off for new jersey general washington the last in the boat to leave leave. the current is moving really fast. when these guys did their dress rehearsal the water

level was so low some of the boats scraped the bottom of the river. the rain from the past few weeks helped. a blast from the cannon announced general washington had made it across. a quick history lesson for the kids. >> is this a great way to sneak in a history lesson. >> yes. >> reporter: these reenactors take their role seriously with general washington calling it a responsibility to history. >> we believe in the history of it. we believe in teaching the public about it and we want to make sure this site is never accomplished. >> the spirit of christmas swept through the delaware valley today as many christians gathered with family and friends at their local churches. >> ♪ hundreds of worshipers packed the basilica of saints

peter and paul yesterday and today. archbishop charles chaput was there taking part in midnight masses. pope francis delivered his message from the vatican today as tens of thousands of worshipers listened. he took the opportunity to speak about a number of international issues of pray tour peace in the middle east, africa and ukraine. this was his second christmas blessing since becoming pope. >> well, as you heard, the weather helped in a couple ways today. the rain helped with that level of the river and of course the nice weather brought crowds out to the reenact. it was a beautiful blustery day although -- this is 43 degrees from collingswood new jersey. clear skies cooling off and the winds are dying down. let's check in with phil in philadelphia reporting 43 degrees.

storm scan3 completely clear and as we zoom out high pressure building in and the front moves away. the further the front goes, the weaker our pressure gradient were. the winds are dying downton night and the next couple of days the winds won't be much of an issue. right now 45 degrees at the airport which is still above average for the time of year by quite a bit. 42 in allentown. it's 42 in trenton and in atlantic city at the moment. and it's a very warm christmas. it's going to go down in the record books as a little misleading. our actual high temperature 65 degrees today but if you think did it really feel that warm? you would be right because that temperature was set at 2:00 a.m., very warm in the middle of the night. then temperatures dropped, 65 throw just 3 degrees off the record for 1964. we did actually tie the christmas eve record. we got to 64 yesterday. sunny skies for friday, beautiful day with a high near 50. saturday sunshine and it's warmer. then a front starts to move

through and watch for a couple showers during sunday. through the overnight hours clear, 36 degrees. all is calm and bright. friday sunny skies 50 degrees for your daytime high. here's your eyewitness weather seven-day forecast and it looks pretty great for the next couple days. we'll see temperatures head to the mid-50's by saturday. if anyone is that heading up to watch penn state play in new york it will be a great day, sunday 50 degrees and an afternoon shower. colder next week, highs only in there 30's as we close out 2014 on wednesday. wake up with "eyewitness news" in the morning. kate

somewhere else and do that. we're going to play football. >> the eagles were officially eliminated when the cowboys destroyed the colts to clinch the east. the eagles have lost. several players including mark sanchez could be playing that last game in an eagles uniform on sunday sanchez slated to become a free agent after the season. >> we started off the season so strong and been on a three game skid here. that's never fun. our mentality is just getting up for this game, getting excited about it and have one more opportunity to go play well. >> for a team who started outer so strong, it's hard to believe this will be the last game of the season. >> nobody put us in this position but ourselves. we take full responsibility for it and we got to go out there and play football. >> or us it's a big game. i'm sure there's other teams playing for things more
