>> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> right now at 10:00 the latest on the investigation into a bucks county hit and run. the crash left a woman dead on her 93rd birthday. police say a driver plowed into a house and took off. good evening, i'm jessica dean. chris may is off tonight. this crash happened on red brook lane in levittown bucks county and tonight after finding and questioning that driver, police say they aren't ready to charge him yet. "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco has more information on this story. >> reporter: jenny russo died on her 93rd birthday after a hit and run driver slammed into her bedroom in the early morning hours friday. the 20-year-old pickup truck driver turned himself in to bristol police 12 hours later after they found the damaged red dodge pickup at a home nearby. >> he expressed remorse. he has been cooperative

through the entire process. >> reporter: russo's family members felt the house shake and saw headlights leaving the scene around 3:00 a.m. a trail of tire marks left in the grass. >> yesterday was christmas and today is now her birthday and, you know, we knew she was getting ill but we didn't know that something like this would happen. >> reporter: russo had been in hospice care. the impact pushed her dresser into her bed leaving her room exposed to the outside. her son said he had to move her twice to a warmer location in the house while emergency crews repaired the whole. too much for her 58-pound body. she died a short time later. >> she really wanted to pass in her own bedroom but unfortunately was not able to do that. >> she was a lively woman. she liked to get dressed up, have fun. >> reporter: police say the damage on the red dodge. the suspect's family leaves bristol township police station after the man was questioned. police decide not to charge him until they talked to the district attorney. they say the man is remorseful

and has apologized to the russo family. >> one of the family members of the driver respond to do their home with an apology and they were very gracious to him in accepting it. >> reporter: and jessica, police are not releasing the name of that 20-year-old driver. the d.a. will make a determination what, if any, charges will be filed early next week. we're live in bristol township, diana rocco for "eyewitness news" other cw philly. >> diana thank you. a hazmat scare prompts the evacuation of a home in germantown. just after 6 o'clock this evening a substance leaked from a truck. once the spill was contained officials determined it was gas and allowed that familiar to return. a sunny day led to a chilly night here in philadelphia. 90's franklin square all lit up. meteorologist kate bilo is here now with a first look at what's in store for your weekend. kate. >> thanks, jessica. we've got a flies start to the weekend. today was a beautiful day

especially for late december. temperatures got into the low 50's in most of the area and that's well above average. we should be in the low 40's here at the end of december. we're heading into the coldest stretch of the year, the coldest it gets here is in mid january when our average high is about 38 degrees but it's not going to feel like the coldest part of the year tomorrow when we get nice try conditions. the clouds are moving from the southwest and that's bringing some generally mild air into the northeastern united states. our next storm is way back here up over portions of the upper midwest. you can see snow on the backside of that front. that will move through our area as we get into the day on sunday bringing a few showers and then a blast of much cooler weather as we head into next week and into the new year. temperatures now dropping a bit, 40 in the city but already down to 34 in allentown, 34 in reading, freezing in millville and 33 in atlantic city. but your weekend looks pretty nice especially tomorrow. sunny and bright for your saturday, 54 degrees. showers around especially during the midday time frame on sunday, the high 52 but

"the interview" which is about killing north korea's leader is also being streamed on high pressure but official viewer ship numbers haven't been released. dozens of philadelphia taxing companies are suing uber. cab drivers say the san francisco car service operates in bad faith. they refer to them as gypsy cabs that have be undermined the entire industry. uber says it will vigorously defend itself in court. the go fund me page for the survivors of the gemmell family has raised over $486,000. the money will be given to marie's husband and their daughter. we set up a link on our web site at cbsphilly.com.

one person is dead following a crash between a motorcycle an crush. chopper three over the scene at river road and mccoy's lane. the second person was injured and taken to the hospital by helicopter. an investigation into that crash is now under way. and tonight philadelphia police are investigating a crash involving a school busloaded with children on the roosevelt boulevard. this happened near henry avenue in east falls this afternoon. authorities say the driver suffered burns from wires on the bus that caused him to lose control. none of the students were injured. they were transferred to another bus. a 94-year-old woman missing since christmas eve has been found safely. stella miniger was driving from her home to gilbertsville for a family christmas celebration when she lost her way. her concerned family called police. this afternoon detectives told them she was found 50 miles from home at the wawa on south church street in mount laurel, new jersey. her neighbor says she's known

>> breaking news right now in delaware county. chopper three over north state and golf view roads in springfield where two vehicles collided. as you can see one overturned. we're told first responders are working to free one person who is trapped. it's unclear if anyone else was hurt. we'll bring you an update on "eyewitness news" at 11:00. wall street wrapped up the holiday week on a record high note. the dow picked up 23 points on friday closing at 18,053. the nasdaq added 33. wall street's strong day was fueled in part by positive consumer spending reports. the national retail federation says holiday sales could hit more than $617 billion. falling gas prices are the gift that keeps on giving. "eyewitness news" was in cherry hill today as gas prices were lowered at a gas station along route 70. the national average now

two septa officers who helped deliver chris on a market frankford line train last night at 15th and market in center city. we're told mother and baby are in good condition at hahnemann hospital. winter fest at the river rink at penn's landing is a sight to behold. with a view of the river and the light shows on the hour beginning at 5:00 it's a picture perfect set pouring ice skating. when you get cold you can take a break and warm up with some hot chocolate. it's chilly tonight but kate tells us this could be a good weekend to be outside, right, kate. >> that's right jessica especially tomorrow if you wants to get on the ice tomorrow afternoon will be perfect it will be cool but not cold and above average for the time of year. let's can check in with some of our weather watchers. temperatures have really fallen off here. we're down to 33 degrees already in riverton, new jersey, this thanks to kevin, he's reporting 33 and a clear sky. as we head further into jersey we're seeing more temperatures in the 30's.

all the heavy gear. storm scan3 shows clouds moving in. you can see where the prevailing wind is coming from and as we zoom out really nothing happening. hi pressure is planted firmly over the eastern seaboard. the next thing to head our way will be this system and that's the one moving through portions of the northern plains and the midwest. that's a can cold front coming through the day sunday and stall to our south on monday. temperatures right now again depending on where you are it's a little bitter colder in some of our outlying area, 32 in millville, 34 reading, still 40 at philadelphia international airport which is still above ramp fox5 for this time of year. sunny skies today and high pressure hangs on thousand the day tomorrow, sunshine and that nice southwest flow keeping it mild. our next front comes through on sunday. we'll time that out for you. most of the day tomorrow looking fine, few more clouds through the overnight hours and into sunday morning here's 11:00 a.m. notice a couple showers here and there. that moves out but the front stalls.
